When Hanada had proudly told one of his cousins, Kon, that he'd been given a mission meant for only the best of genin, his response was to asked him why Echizen hadn't been assigned and then laughed. Hanada's response was to mumble that the short, wimpy, and totally over specialized Hyousetsu had also been assigned and walk away in a huff. That had been three days ago and he still wasn't talking to Kon, except twice to borrow manga and once when he had forgotten that he was still mad. But now that the mission had finally begun, Hanada felt nothing but excitement and mild indigestion (his love of peppers was unrequited), even if he had to share it with the only other rookie who was probably wasn't better than if you didn't count taijutsu. If you didn't count taijutsu, which every Boukyaku but him did, then the son of the The Tiger of the Western Sky was just a little bit better than him...

...And so was that Tanshin girl who had totally not beat him in their spar, but not her dead brother, because he was dead, and bachan had told him not to mention around Echizen.

"Head out of the clouds, Boukyaku-kun"

Blushing at being noticed, the blue marked boy snapped to attention, "Hai, Sempi."

He, Echizen-san, and a young, jounin ranked kunoichi named Umiko had travelled to the western port city of Umitoshi, to which Umiko claimed to have no relation to when asked. Their mission, or rather her mission, was to meet with Leaf shinobi to receive something she would only refer to as "a package," Hanada hadn't pressed the issue any further, partially because he wanted the jounin to see what a good ninja he was (a good ninja appreciates a good secret) but mostly because he had already figured out what his real mission was, or at least he would have had Shou-taichou not explained it to him before he had left the Boukyaku clan grounds this morning.

According to her, who was either his grandmother's niece or his mother's second cousin, he and Echizen were being sent along for no other reason then to see a Leaf shinobi in person.

"Remember to pay attention to the details, Hanada-kun. Accent, idioms, gestures, clothes, equipment."

He had then had to ask what an idiom was.

"Boukyaku!"

Once again standing at attention, the genin focused on the task at hand, as well as the boat. The Mist group had been waiting on the somewhat busy dock as crewmen unloaded cargo from the steam freighter in front of them. Somewhere on board, or rather, aboard, was the first foreign shinobi Hanada would ever see.

He was pretty pumped.

"I'm telling you, the lemon will help."

Kiki, hanging half over the railing of a terrible contraption know as a steam freighter, released one hand from its death grip on the metal to flick her superior off. "Shove it with the fucking lemons, Omoi, or I'm going to shove them—" She was forced to break off her threat to be sick for the umpteenth time. The dry heaves shook the girl's tiny body.

Kaku, to his credit, did not laugh.

"Now, Itsuki—"

"Kiki," she interrupted. She immediately resumed retching.

"This is your first time out of the country, correct? I know it is, you and Ayaka both. You're going to have to behave once we dock."

"Fuck this country," Kiki groaned. Kaku kept her from pitching over the side after a particularly violent roll of the waves. When he spoke again, there was a sigh in his voice.

"Please? Can't you just—be like Ayaka? She's so quiet."

"She's fucking mute."

"Exactly," Kaku said helplessly. The ship jerked again; he pulled Kiki back onto her feet. Somewhere on deck, there was a shrill whistle. Kiki cussed miserably as Kaku smoothed her frazzled hair down. Somewhere between hearing her mission debriefing and the dinner Kiki had forced him to buy her, the teenager had started thinking they were friends. In the interest of getting more food, Kiki hadn't corrected him.

"Are we here?" she whined. Miracle of miracles, Kaku nodded.

"As soon as we get Ayaka, we can—"

"I'll find her," Kiki blurted. She took a few unsteady steps before finding her footing and dashing off towards the last place she had traded—well, hurled insults at the other genin. They had spent the majority of the journey separated; even watching a girl you hated vomit uncontrollably apparently got old.

Kiki wiped at her mouth self-consciously right before her teammate came into view. "Come on, bitch! Omoi says we're here."

Everytime Umiko snapped to correct Hanada, Echizen hid.

He didn’t want to take this mission, he didn’t even want to be here, he didn’t understand why his presence was necessary if their sole purpose was to simply meet Shinobi of another village. Ever since he became the Lead Mechanic of The Gallant Steam, he was constantly meeting all types of people from out of the country. Actually, the sole reason he was even convinced to take on this mission was their location – Umitoshi. As a trade city known for its wealthy merchants and businessmen, the young Hyousetsu presumed he’d get a little time to himself to search the market and buy essential things for the ship. Necessities like metals he needed for tinkering, or even groceries so he, Tako and Ren could eat (considering they weren’t the smartest spenders). Also, the extra funds for the ship was – well, necessary too.

So Echizen was forced to take one for the team.

Hyousetsu-kun!

Also, everytime Echizen hid, it was behind his taller Boukyaku classmate.

M-ma’am, yes sir! Uh, Miss – I mean, senpai –um, s-sensei-leader. Sir, yes sir!

Umiko’s words were warmer when addressing him, but no matter how cautious she was, his reaction always remained the same. The young Genin snapped to attention and stood right next to the number two rookie, holding his head high although his cheeks flushed red from being nervous. His fingers danced across the black tie he wore, tightening it at the collar of his button down before rolling the sleeves of his opened cardigan up to his elbows. He was in rather casual attire, although a pair of twin wakizashi hung off his belt like prized artifacts.

Hyousetsu-kun, relax.

He couldn’t relax, he was always nervous.

Show some back-bone, they’ll be coming off the boat soon—

—Y-yes, ma’am! Uh, sir, sensei. Um, s-sorry, I’ll just.

Echizen just decided to stay quiet, breathing slow to calm his nerves. Although Hanada was pretty pumped, the number one rookie was just a nervous reck. But he attempted to keep himself composed. He couldn’t run away from this.

Ayaka had understood what ailed Kiki. For about thirty seconds, before she told her body to cut that out and it promptly had. When she saw Kiki, green in the cheeks as a fresh clover, she offered the little hellion a raised eyebrow and sideways smirk, but couldn't bring herself to stay and relish in it. It was one more thing that divided the Sanada from the rest of humanity, and Ayaka was in no mood to be reminded.

Their handler Kaku liked her, but he liked her because she was quiet and too blinded to see the tension in how she stood, in how she acted. She'd seen their like before; using her muteness as an excuse to think her a sweet mewling babe and looking at her with betrayed eyes when her actions were finally loud enough to break through their thick skulls.

Boredom had laid a great siege on Ayaka, and she had fought valiantly back any way she could find, but his advance on the fortress of her mind was slow and inexorable. Kiki caught her in their cabin, lounging in a fort made from a short table and her cloak. She manually overrode the blush before it had a chance to reach her cheek, retrieved her cloak and walked from the cabin with all the nonchalance she could muster.

"Alright. We're going to be meeting Mist shinobi. They've brought genin as well, and you'll be the first leaf-nin they've ever seen. So remember, make a good impression." He was looking at Kiki, so he didn't see Ayaka sigh and roll her eyes.

He gave Ayaka a patronizing little pat on the head that he must had thought was encouraging as he walked past, leading the way down to the docks. She shot a look that was all venom at his back but was left with no recourse but to sulk after him.

It wasn't hard to spot the Mist-nin. They were one of the few people on the dock staying still. Her eyes slid off their superior officer up front to the kids in back. She narrowed her eyes at them for a moment, hmphed and turned to look at the rest of the docks.

"You got the packages there?" The Mist-nin nodded toward the ship.

"We do." He held out his hand and the Mist-nin shook it. "I can take you to see them while the deckhands move them onto the docks."

The foreign leader turned back to her little child hanger-ons. "Hanada, Echizen, take them back to the inn, make sure they get settled in alright." She said, pointing a thumb toward Kiki and Ayaka. "Try not to cause an international crisis."

"You too," Kaku said. "And try to learn something." He gave the Mist leader a motion and they started walking up into the ship.

"I'm sure we can all learn a thing or two today, Konoha-San."

Ignoring his superior's last audible comment because he was eleven the tall boy smiled, to him, the Leaf-man's last comment had revealed a game. The genin girls had come to learn details, accidents, idiots, jesters, and so forth, the same as them. They were all here to learn without teaching, see details but show none. That was probably why Umiko-sempi had suddenly started addressing him and the Hyousetsu less formally, she had been signaling them... probably.

The Boukyaku suspected that the idea was for him and Echizen to pick up some non important data about the girl and Leaf, the relatively short walk from the dock to the inn cutting down on the chance that two Mist boys would talk too much. But there was no fun in that. Besides, Echizen hid behind him the entire journey here, there was noway he was suddenly going to start blabbing to girls they'd just met. Hanada had this locked.

"Ahh... hi?" the genin seemingly asked, not really sure what he was suppose to say, to the point that he actually glanced at the quiet Hyousetsu for help. The poor boy suddenly realized that he really wasn't sure what to say to a girl he'd never met before, he hadn't had to actually introduce himself to anyone since his first day at the academy. Well, except for Isoko, but that didn't count, he'd used a clone for that, "I'm Hanada."

Luckily, he then remember that Kon-nii had once told him the most important thing any man needed to know about girls, which was funny, cause Hanada would have expect such advice to have come from one his female relatives, "Wanna check out the market before we follow orders or somethin'?"

Smooth.

Kiki waved off Kaku's repeated warning, muttering something unflattering under her breath. Ayaka seemed to have recovered from her earlier shame, at least, which meant she'd be able to handle the introductions like the little diplomat she was.

Oh, oh no. She couldn't do that. She couldn't do much at all, could she?

Kiki smiled widely enough at the two boys opposite to show off her missing tooth. "Howdy, Hanada. I'm Kiki." The nickname would speak for itself: dreadful; ghastly; offensive; disliked. She jerked a thumb towards her teammate. "This is Aya-kun. She doesn't speak. It's nothing personal, just inborn haughtiness. It's why she's freakishly tall." The genin tilted her head, surveying the boy who had spoken. "Are you... leaking? Is that normal?" Her eyes cut to the other boy. He didn't seem to be leaking, or very concerned.

"Weird," Kiki laughed. She stretched her arms over her head. Hours and hours of being sick on a boat hadn't been kind to her poor little body. "Aren't you guys going to treat us? Huh. Konoha's shinobi always take their guests to eat before anything. Good manners, all that." She looked towards Ayaka, shrugging. "Guess they don't like being polite in other countries. I can dig it, I guess. Maybe it's part of the leaking thing?"

She brushed past the two foreign shinobi and peered around the dock. It was simple enough to follow the path through the ships back to the edge of the town, and Kiki did just that, calling, "This way, right?" as she weaved through the busy sailors. It wasn't terribly important to her whether or not her new minders could keep up; Kiki wanted to explore. Doing so normally was a lot easier when she didn't have three idiots trailing after her, or at least, pickpocketing certainly was.

Kiki popped out of the throng of people at the edge of the dock, polishing the apple she had acquired along the way on her shirt. As she bit into the ripe fruit, the genin turned. Maybe someone had managed to keep up.

W-wait, that’s…” His quiet plea fell on def ears, for the two higher ranked shinobi all ready disappeared into the boat, leaving the little Hyousetsu boy with hand outstretched, “…t-that’s it?

But then the bright buzz of dialogue, the aroma of breath and sea breeze, and silent mannerisms whizzed right by him. Natural brown eyes glistened purple in the sunlight as they moved from Hanada, to Kiki, and then to Aya-chan in an attempt to keep up with what was happening. The crystal strands of Echizen’s hair bobbed as he stepped back – or more over retreated a step back – once the missing-tooth Leaf Genin’s eyes cut at him. His anxiety flared for a brief second, the boy’s eyes wandering about the scenery in an attempt to make no eye contact with anyone.

But that’s when he was called weird:

W-weird? I’m not…

…Tr-treat you to food? But we were just told—

…B-but in Kirigakure, good manners is—

We are polite…and he’s…he’s not leaking—

—W-wait! D-do you even know where you’re going?

Heavy breaths left Echizen after the foreign shinobi girl cut right by he and Hanada, to where he offered his classmate one of the most helpless gazes ever. Without so much of a second guess, the little Mist boy followed behind Kiki. His fingers strolled against the metal of one of the swords latched to his belt, tapping against the material like a musician fretting notes on a string. This was a copping-mechanism for his nerves, where he’d often tap a melody against the nearest object to keep himself occupied (and not burst). Although Kiki wove through the crowd with no ounce of regard, Echizen could tell she didn’t care to wait for them. It reminded him of his headstrong classmate Fuki.

The Hyousetsu’s observant and nimble feet made it easy for him to trail behind the Leaf Genin. When he popped out of the throng of folks at the edge of the docks – after having accidently bumped into a few, paid for her apple and another item – and stood before her with a horrified look in his eyes.

W-what are you doing?” He pleaded, almost whined, “H-here, we don’t steal….t-they don’t steal in Konoha, right?

This was a genuine question, but he would let it slide, his Aniki was prone to the same antics. Regardless, he offered her a lemon acquired from before:

Lemons h-help better,” He breathed a curteous air, “For the sea-sickness.

For her . . . helpful explanation Kiki earned from Ayaka a hard stare and fist held up in the air with a slowly straightening middle finger. Kiki, ever unable to restrain the second asshole she called a mouth, spewed her diarrhea all around her, mooching in the same sentences she insulted. Ayaka was given little choice except to follow behind the other genin as they followed behind Kiki. While the Mist-nin might have less experience with the little wretch, Ayaka had worked with Kiki. Not much, admittedly, but you scarcely needed more than ten minutes in her company to learn the first of her many flaws.

Konoha taught them to master great crimes, crimes like murder, like assassination, grand theft. All villages that Ayaka had knowledge of did. But Kiki was a special soul; she was already a master of petty crime. She had learn small violence and theft and hurting enough to make a master double-take. She would pluck coins from tip jars, take a strip of bacon from a doe-eyed orphan, and in general make the world a worse place in immeasurably small ways to make her life just a bit better. She rolled her eyes while the short, frantic Mist-nin—Echizen, was it?—floundered in his earnestness against Kiki's shit. When he finally caught Kiki at a stop she stopped not far behind, propped a hand on her hip and grinned. Against her better judgment, she started to like the squirt.

Ayaka had no issue with Echizen thinking Konoha thieves, but at the very least she would take apart one notion. She clapped her hands together, loud as could be, to get their attention, pressed four fingers over her heart and nodded her head not me. Ayaka pointed her thumb at Kiki, rolled her eyes and nodded emphatically.

Hanada attempted to talk, his hand raised to head height, ready to literally point out the mouthy girl's mistakes. The boy had nothing to say, or to shake his finger at; the Leaf girl hadn't exactly been wrong. Hanada was definately leaking, and Echizen was totally weird. All he could do was to stand stunned as Echizen's failed attempt at correcting Kiki fell on def ears, leading to Hanada standing on the dock by himself as the Kiki, Echizen, and the quiet girl all took off into the crowd. Defeated, he sighed the lie he had meant to tell the witch named girl, "It's just the humidity..."

Kind of obligated to follow the disaster that was the trio, the white blond Mist boy caught up to the other genin just in time to catch the exchange and completely misread Aya's non-verbal communication, "Yah, Echi-kun," annoyance causing the somewhat less than flattering, and rather inaccurate, diminutive slip from the number two rookies mouth. "Feed this one," Hanada joined Aya in pointing at herself, "Not the witch." Kiki was a witch's name, he'd learned that from a manga.

"And you," his attention switching to the thief genin, guided by his pointer finger, "You're gunn a get us in trouble." While his voice was only raised to beat out the noise of the crowd, the boy's tone and face revealed that getting in trouble was the worst fate imaginable. Which was somewhat interesting, considering that Hanada usually had a pretty good imagination.

"Kirigakure protects and serves Mizu, you can't steal in front of us," As Hanada spoke these words, with the understanding of a parrot, he did his best impression of authority, which unfortunately meant he was now standing with his hands on his hips like his sixty year old clan leader, "We're suppose to stop you," the last part was meant for kind little Echizen, "Not cover for you."

Kiki tried to keep her expression in check at her new companions' outrage. It probably wasn't kosher to laugh in the faces of foreign shinobi—although getting caught stealing by them was hardly better. The genin didn't feel bad. What was an apple, in the scheme of things? Enough to take the edge off of her ravenous hunger, not enough to plunge whatever stupid merchant into poverty—like her. Kiki couldn't bring herself to feel remorseful.

That was, she couldn't, until the strangely dressed little dude extended a lemon towards her. She was immediately sorry that her hands were busy with an apple and not her iron knuckles, then.

With no way to make the squeaky boy choke on the lemon currently, Kiki accepted his gift without a word. The apple was relegated to being held between her jaws as she peeled the new piece of fruit. It was the apple that kept her from saying something rude to Ayaka—you don't steal because your clan full of fucking monsters steals for you—or asking the boy in the tie why he was so goddamn twitchy. And why not just wear pants if your shorts were that low, really?

She was almost done peeling the lemon when Leaky McLeakerson popped out of the crowd. He had apparently used the time hamfisting through the docks to work himself into a right frenzy; Kiki watched impassively until he pointed towards her.

"Feed this one... not the witch."

The apple between Kiki's teeth crunched loudly as she bit through it. She caught it deftly with one hand while bringing the lemon up to replace it; without breaking eye-contact with this fool, Kiki took a large bite.

"Sweet," she said, after chewing and swallowing. "Looks like even the lemons here are pussies." Kiki took a step towards Hanada, bringing them uncomfortably close together. "You want to try, Hana? Or does your adorable authority fetish keep you from accepting food from others?" She turned her head far enough to spit out a fair number of seeds; not all of them cleared the white-haired boy's feet.

"I thought they only had hicks in Grass, but what do you know? Turns out there's a healthy stock of them in—what's this place, again?" Kiki sniffed. "Village hidden in the fish shit?"

She grinned, quick and savage. "You don't know what trouble is, you fucking flower. Don't run your mouth about things you don't understand."
