Default Best Served Cold: The Finale

Sakuyuu kicked the door down.

He strode into the room, his cloak pulled tight around him—it had been tan for weeks, but now it faded into the background, natural as a chameleon’s skin. The Tsuriau walked, not ran, inside. His Setsuri’s net was spread wide, and he felt no threats. There was despair a few floors lower, where he assumed he would find alleys of Bouryoraku, and other little flashes of people all around, in every direction. They flashed, like stars in the darkness, like a hundred heartbeats under a hundred thumbs.

Asuko was where she had been for hours beforehand; at long last Sand had found her. At long last they would have justice. Sakuyuu felt no shinobi around her but his own teammates—and more importantly, no Priests.

He waited in the doorway for a long moment, waiting for a trap to spring. Some hidden mechanism triggered, some construct of chakra too different for his Setsuri to find to emerge from the shadows and bring the fight to them. Nothing happened. “It’s clear,” he whispered, just loud enough for the others to hear, and strode into the room.

They had chosen an old place—all cracked adobe from the wear and tear of the centuries, and dusty from lack of use. It was in a little, twisted corner of Bouryoraku A conventional search would have taken those months to work out, and even then there would have been warning, and she might have escaped. But Sakuyuu had seen her, and synced with her, and no one could escape a Tsuriau once they had been caught in their eyes.

She’s this way,” he said, and started off again through the building, following the strangely muddled beating of Asuko’s coils.

The door had been kicked off the hinges.

It’s clear, she’s this way.

Emerging from the shadows like the moon rising over the horizon, the Tenryuu appeared with strength in each step and deductive prowess highlighting his ruby gaze. Those eyes observed the span of the entrance in silence, letting them roll through the scenery with quick glances honed to capture their surroundings with the accuracy of a sharp-shooter. Two eyes were better than one; it meant that one person could miss something another could gather –so three kicked that concept up at least tenfold.

Calm, he followed behind the stealth footsteps of the Tsuriau with the same nonchalant caution, aware and alert with the absence of tension. Sakuyuu took the lead due to the linage of his clan, which proved to be as helpful as a Kabane when it came to tracking the location of a target. After all, they stood in the lion’s den, prepared to apprehend their prey and be on their way.

Though there wasn’t an extensive collection of information Hitoko knew about Maeda Asuko, from the stories and articles and other miscellaneous items sent his way about her, there was an underlining excitement that brought a smile to his martial artist heart. It’s always this way when it came to high profiled missions with the opportunity to be toe-to-toe with an adversary bolstering a life-time-list of lethal qualities –it just sparked unhindered interest and enthusiasm. Then again:

He was a Renchishin.

Who strode with emotions tucked under his cloak, dreadlocks in motion with the stride and eyes and body harmonized for whatever may come their way. Inhaling a cool breath of air, he continued forward.

Calmly the Penitent brought up the rear, eyes looking behind to make sure nothing suspicious was going on behind the group. Kaiten was paired with that SHINRAI once more but also another one, one of those mind reader guys, or so that’s what he thought. The Zaika that was now covering his body blended into his surroundings like a chameleon, changing colors and shades with each different surrounding he passed. Sure it wasn’t the best camouflage then again they weren’t exactly being stealthy as the first had kicked in the door.

The man already had scrolls ready for use as this was to be a great showdown with Maeda Asuko. One of the key people in the hunt to take down Assate. The Penitent’s steps were silent, almost as if he weren’t touching the floor at all but one could never be too careful and he thought of sending out a recon unit, just to aid the team in ensuring their walk wasn’t right into a trap. There was already some reconnaissance done but one could never be too sure, especially with dealing like people of this caliber. Life was ever changing as were battlegrounds, anything could have happened between then and now, anything could have changed.

But with everything changing around them, he had heard of the Tsuraiu and they were almost like old fashion bloodhounds that once you are locked into their sights, you won’t escape. That sort of eased the man, however nothing could be too certain. If Sunagakure was sending three elite Jounin to the site, that means they had to be expecting something big, something extravagant to happen that would warrant the power that was being sent into this old, almost run down building. While walking, the Penitent pulled out one of his scrolls, going through a series of hand seals and soon an ink mouse jumped from the parchment, running behind the group and standing next to the doorway, to ensure their escape was going to be safe.

OOC: Bijusuteki Yajuu Kousakuin no Jutsu (Artistic Beast Spy Technique)
Descriptions: The user paints a picture of a single animal. This animal can be any size, though usually the user makes a small one to be conspicuous. The animal comes, instead of as art as is normal, as a real animal, with fur, scales, etc. The beast cannot attack nor can it do anything really special except for one thing. The user can see through the eyes of the animal, making it a useful spying technique. The animal can move, but not quickly, and is easily destroyed.

He knew she was here with the certain of a sun on rising, but he was uneasy. For hours he had watched, or rather felt her. There was not a moment where he had not had one ear open to the pulses of her inner coils; but always they had felt the same. Muddled, like like a light beneath dark swamp waters. Dull, like a sword that had no edge.

Where are the guards?
Sakuyuu wondered. Where are her defenses?

He pushed through the last door and stared into the room. Asuko was sitting in front of a window, and little motes of dust danced in the light around her. There was no table in front of her; no nothing. She did not react, did not even see to notice that they were there. Her coils were the same as always; dull and opaque.

There's something wrong, he thought, knowing this was not the natural way to act. She seemed to have been waiting for them. He looked into her dead eyes and . . . Without the hood to obscure his sight, she looked . . . different. She scowled at him, scowled at them all . . . and Sakuyuu's eyes darted to the corners of the mouth, and saw the stitches.

Her skin was pulled tight into the shake of Asuko's face, and along the sides there were filthy scars, holding it into a shape that was not its own and an expression it could never change. Her ear had been sliced off, and it was green with rot.

She was dumb and dull because she was drugged, and she was unguarded because she was not not Asuko at all. Had never been Asuko, even when Sakuyuu had seen her walked to the podium and listened to the cultists cheer. "Twins," he hissed, and spread his Setsuri wide.

If she’d been in this state of still, drugged and frozen in the room with pearl eyes reflecting blank, yet frowned, gaze toward the doorway for awhile – he’d wished they’d been more prepared, or at least, to an extent, aware of the situation. When they’d entered the building, scaled the steps, kicked down the door to waltz in with ease, Hitoko had no clue just how long Asuko had been sitting there motionless. Nor had he known the state of the coils of chakra racing through her body, which were dull and oblique. If he’d known the circumstances, he would’ve emerged through the doors of the apartment with a different mindset, opposed to the current battle mantra heating the crimson river-streams of liquid coursing through his veins. But one couldn’t dwell on the what ifs for too long, not when they were on such an important mission.

Observing the lopped eared, stitched mouthed woman who looked to serve as a prompt decoy and replacement to the real Asuko, the jewel-eyed Renchishin scoffed a quiet sigh: the divine breath of disappointment. Side of lip curled, unamused eyebrows perked, but in the depths of his heart there sat empathy for the woman whose ear corroded a haze of bubbling green. Feeling the impulsive need for further investigation, Hitoko took a couple steps forward, the unhealthy desire of a curious detective devoid of conscious pulling him along until:

Twins

Hissed pass the lips of his partner. The atmosphere of the room changed at the spreading of the Setsuri, and the next obvious steps were all ready being formulated. Orders weren’t needed, but the body of the Tenryuu chose to relax instead of tensing. With eyes ready and ears opened, Hitoko’s gaze fell upon Sakuyuu for their next move.

The walk was long due to the tension. But it was awkwardly quiet, there were no guards, no defenses for someone so supposedly high with Assate. It was all actually a bit eerie, but if their chakra sensing teammate didn’t sense anything wrong, then things must have been going according to plan. Kaiten wasn’t one to complain when things were going smoothly, even too smoothly as long as everything was proceeding as planned.

The group reached the final door and that was thrown open, their target was sitting there, motionless, not surprised that they showed up. Now things were too eerie for him. Her face seemed so lifeless, so…fake. Fuck. Lips were stitched together, face wasn’t what was seemed or advertised. This wasn’t their target at all. Somehow these priests had done enough research to even come up with fake chakra coils to disturb the Tsuriau’s hunting. These people knew too much about Sunagakure and one had to wonder how they exactly knew so much.

Sakuyuu mentioned twins and that brought Kaiten’s head around, looking for what was being talked about. Of course he couldn’t see anything and knew it was the Setsuri that caught the signal. It was at that moment that from the hall way they just passed through, the ink mouse that the Penitent left had arrived. The Jounin threw out a scroll and the beast jumped into it, splaying words instead of its form.

”There are two people coming our way. Twins…looking exactly the same. Older men, probably in their 60s or 70s. Frail looking men but wearing big cloaks. Gold chains holding their cloaks together and gold bands on arms and legs.”

He reported everything that he saw. Unfortunately that didn’t mean too much. For if two men were coming this way, that meant that the three Jounin had been led into a trap and that these two weren’t to be taken lightly.

Rizou and Shizou had received the signal that three men were caught into their trap. All of their planning and research were not for naught. It was now their turn to get their hands dirty, to destroy some of the best that Sunagakure had to offer. This was to show that Assate was not to be toyed with and now was the time for the demonstration. The two men walked down the hallway, passed the kicked down door, their steps together, Rizou moved his right foot forward, Shizou’s left foot matched that same stride.

It was as though they had stepped out from nowhere; shielded somehow from the the technique Sakuyuu had been convinced only other Tsuriau could circumvent. But they were not Tsuriau; he would know if someone had gone missing in his family, forget a pair of twins. They would have been good luck, born into their family. But now as the two strangers approached, Sakuyuu felt power radiating off of them like waves. They were marked by the same strangeness that he had felt in the other Priests; echoes of each other's power. And that power matched the Kazekage and his advisers.

Sakuyuu had accepted them as enemies the moment they appeared in his vision, and followed their progress with his Setsuri. The moment they stepped through the door he made his move.

Chakra ran up his hands, through his sword, and he charged the metal until it was near to overflowing. He swung the blade across his body, a rush of cutting wind rushed toward the two Priests in a long, horizontal line, almost before they stepped through the door. Whoever they were, they were on the wrong side, and strong. Sakuyuu did not doubt that they could stop his attack, but it would keep them busy.

If they wanted to fight in a narrow space, he’d oblige them with a grin.

Two twins entered pass the broken limbs of wood splintering from what once was a functional door, with confidence in their step have you. Out of the three, Sakuyuu lead the first assault, prompt in his ways and decisive in his action: this impressed Hitoko. One could tell by the way his eye-brow curved in pure amusement, smirk thinning the side of his lip as it curled with the same finesse as the eyebrow. A horizontal manifestation of wind pierced through the sky, projected by the skilled hands of the Tsuriau clansmen, but had been followed by the cool thudding footsteps of the Renchishin, who paced in front of his comrades to stand at the forefront. Slipping fingertips beneath arm guards, Hitoko tugged at each one, a ritual of tightening them on the forearm in preparation for battle while speaking with pure assurance:

Cover me.

Hands disappeared in a phantom-silhouette blur of seals and a calm string of air exited from his chest.

Fuuton: Kaze Ryuu

The exhaled wind formed into a large, ruby-eyed serpent bolstering an icy blue mane and golden claws reflecting from the dim illumination of the apartment’s narrow hallway space. Springing from the Tenryuu’s core was a dragon crafted of wind, attempting to manifest to its full length of twenty feet, it swirled and maneuvered as it launched forward in order to minimize the evasive space the two twins had. At this point, their new adversary’s didn’t only have to worry about Sakuyuu’s first strike, but also had to equate the serpent of wind dancing its way at full speed in their direction. Hitoko wished to test their adversaries, to be honest, expecting them to penetrate right through both attacks, but it’d keep them busy – or even give their third comrade a chance to take advantage of the opening it’d create.

Regardless, Hitoko made sure to stand stern amidst the narrow passage of the hallway. Meaning, if they wished to divert a direct attack to his Jounin comrades, they’d have to get through him first.

Two men soon appeared before the group of Jounin and the one person they could count on for ambushes was completely oblivious. Things were going really great for this mission that Sand had prepared. Nonetheless It couldn’t have been anything that was insurmountable for the three shinobi to take care of. After all, for a mission like this, clearly the best were sent out and that was them. Kaiten absorbed the message from his mouse, the images received actually matched up perfectly with the twins standing before the group.

They were frail alright, but to be able to hide from a Tsuraiu meant that something was going on, they knew something more than what Sand knew. And to nip the issue in the bud, his two teammates began to move quickly. First was a slashing gust of wind then came more wind in the form of a dragon. They were attacking in pure Sunagakure style. Of course Kaiten was going to deviate from the group, he was still at the back and had a scroll out once more, jotting down some sort of ink masterpiece, or so he thought it would be.

Soon then a flurry of hand seals were performed and through the wind of the dragon a leopard leaped out, claws bared towards the twins. The Penitent kept his scrolls out, seeing the prowess of his teammates at close combat and figuring someone had to take up the rear. If that was the case, then surely Kaiten would be able to take care of that duty, supporting the other two Jounin with his artwork while also keeping his composure incase the twins thought that he might be the weak link due to his staying in the back. Of course at the same time, that would be a mistake on their part.

Watching the onslaught that the Sand shinobi performed, it wasn’t long before the twins began to absorb the building they housed them into the sand which they loved. Deft moves had avoided the slashing wind and the movements of the dragon and Shizou began a series of hand seals and while it prove to be an absolute counter, the leopard was suppressed by a leaping shark out of the sand.

”Silly Sand Shinobi. Think you can stop Assate. Instead you shall incur our wrath on his part.” Their words almost echoing each other but what it really was happened to be the alternating of words. It all flowed as if right out of a script.

While that was happening the other, Rizou had already begun his assault, the sand that once composed the building lifted up in the air began to rain down in a diagonal fashion, all of it aimed at the three shinobi.

Sakuyuu sheathed his sword and looked on the two priests with narrow eyes. "Then let him come," he said, his hands flashing through a short series of seals. "Show us your false God." The Twins and the Lady were the only Gods that would ever be, and Sakuyuu knew that much for a fact. He leapt forward, toward the priests, his eyes narrow and determined even as the building shifted to sand around him, shaped itself to the will of the two priests.

It seemed the stories about them had been correct; they did not need to rely on seals to bring the sand to life. It rose from the floor like a vertical wave and froze there. It fired toward the three of them, and Sakuyuu was running right into it.

But then the one Tsuriau split into two; the one that really mattered and the one that could be seen.

The visible one did not change course, whether from lack of a chance to shift it or belief that he might power through it. Either way he was wrong; one of the clumps of sand took him in the face. It was the size of a fist and hurt just about as much. He staggered, and took another to the chest. When the second hit him in the face blood came from his nose, and he fell to his knees, holding his hand over his face but the pummeling went on and on and on.

But the Sakuyuu that mattered was quicker. He had learned the sword over a short lifetime, but it had been all he knew. Reactions had been all he knew, and experience taught him that it was always best to get out of the line of fire, as fast as possible. He rolled to the right, just barely out of range, the sand whizzing past his head. Time and invisibly bought for himself, Sakuyuu stalked nearly to the priests, because soon he would be visible, and soon he would be too close for them to stop.
