Physical Description:
Cracked, calloused, blistered skin covers Motonubu's body like a poorly constructed piece of pottery. Although tense, sinewy muscles give some light shape to the man's body, the once soft and smooth surface of an affluent upper class citizen now seems shiftless and hardened by the heat of the sun. Narrow brown eyes dart search constantly for weaknesses to exploit even while his dark face might crack a slow smile or furrowed scowl. His trimmed black hair, accompanied by a small, carefully shaped goatee, is twisted into long braids and blends in well against his burnt skin. Wide and sturdy looking facial features such as a large nose and wide set eyes are a bit reminiscent of that of a bear, lending a bit of extra intimidation to Motonubu's expressions. Perhaps most out of place is Motonubu's sophisticated accent and speech, giving his words an air of aloofness despite being delivered through a sandpaper voice. Even his movements show that same kind of elegant fluidity, his gestures and mannerisms a vestigial fragment of his upper class upbringing. When sufficiently agitated his actions drop all pretense of grace and become restrained and minimal, like those of a beast stalking dangerous prey. Motonubu is someone who wears his emotions on his sleeve, and in general it is easy to judge exactly what his present attitude from his facial expression alone.

Clothing:
Forced to adopt very utilitarian and functional clothing over stylish or comfortable pieces, the largest part of Motonubu's wardrobe is made up of dull colored tunics, robes, and gowns. Each piece has been carefully stitched and sewn many times over by a careful hand to repair the damage from heavy usage, and the extent of the signs of repair give away the poor quality of the clothing. Motonubu also prefers face-concealing head wraps , hoods, and the occasional short scarf, each emblazoned across the forehead with the Sand insignia . Frequently the hitai-ate is strapped around the cloth to keep it tight on his head, while casually he tends wear in around his neck or across his arm. When on duty, the flak jacket is usually worn over the lighter clothing but behind cloaks or coats. The few shinobi tools he uses are kept within the pockets of the vest, although when off duty he will usually have them tucked somewhere discrete within his clothing.

Personality:
He's the worm thriving in the intestine of any fattened calf. A selfish, conniving bastard, Motonubu would sooner throw an ally to the wolves than risk failure. His guiding principle is to always win, always win, always win. To that end, he will use any trick at his disposal and sacrifice every pawn under his control to achieve a crushing victory. Watching others experience the agony of total defeat is one of Motonubu's more shameful pleasures. Although possessed by a cold sense of cruel logic, his personal behavior rarely reflects his professional standards. When not on the field, he is an impulsive addict bent on chasing whims and acting on urges regardless of the consequences. Those who work with him might perceive him to be a particularly vicious shinobi, while those who live with him would see him more as a seedy scumbag. While in the field these flaws remain suppressed- his disciplined mind is trained to shove those instincts aside and focus to a sharp point of efficiency. His loyalty to Sunagakure is firm, but at the end of the day he still lives in the mercenary mindset. What matters is that he only gets paid for results- anything and everything else is just meaningless details.

Built into the cowl of his usual outfit after suffering from multiple gas-based attacks over the years, Motonubu's helmet is designed with a visor and face mask that can be activated by frowning really hard. This seals the head off from the outside while still allowing air through the breathing apparatus. Provides night vision when active as well.

His trusty grappling hook, with a fancy new upgrade! A small mechanism attached to his arm lets him launch the hook without needing to wind up and throw it. The hook itself is sharp and can be used as a weapon, and is attached to his arm via chain. A special device inside lets him recall it back in after extending as well.

Functionally, it’s just a giant sharp cleaver sized hook on the end of a stick. The hook itself is connected to a chain that is wrapped around the outside handle, and with a flick Motonubu can cast the hook out like a fishing line. Effectively works like a scythe for taijutsu purposes, though both inner and outer edges of the blade carry an edge.

Biography:
Rumors were beginning to spread through the High City of Gion like the roots of an unwanted weed into the Sawamatsu reputation. For years Motonubu's father had built up an image as one of the growing (and increasingly wealthy) power players in Gion Village, and he wasn't about to let his third runt of a son ruin his rise up the the social ladder. Motonubu was a perpetual source of grief for the family, with his constant trespassing into the neighbors' property, incessant teasing and bullying of the younger kids, vandalism, and bad behavior that would have gotten him in severe trouble if it weren't for his families connections. The rich, spoiled boy needed direction and discipline in his life. More importantly, he needed to get out of Gion so the family's reputation wasn't torn to shreds the next time some silly prank took a turn for the worse. There was one place that fit the criteria perfectly: the shinobi academy.

Despite being forced into it, Motonubu flourished at Sunagakure. As the son of a wealthy man and quite a confident little jerk himself, Motonubu found making friends at the shinobi academy both easy and profitable. A network of loyal buddies to cheat from and some strategic bullying of the ones who couldn't be befriended kept him at the top of the social and intellectual pyramid, with any other gaps in his education filled with the best tutoring money could buy. Inevitably, he made enemies. In fact, for every enamored gold-digging friend Motonubu made, there were at least three other students he permanently pissed off in the process. At graduation he had a nasty reputation following him as a liar and a ruthlessly efficient soldier. He reveled in it.

The rumbling storm of shinobi life cooled off after being promoted to genin at the age of twelve. Paired up with two hyper-competent, enthusiastic, and disappointingly likable genin, Motonubu rarely had to pull more than his own weight. His specialization was in support and non-combat shinobi arts, giving him excellent excuses to wimp out on missions that started getting dangerous. Although normally very successful, when the team did occasionally fail a mission it inevitably was an indirect result of Motonubu's lack of passion for conflict. He loved to win, but hated having to fight for it. This nasty weakness would manifest itself horribly in the first chuunin exams his team would compete in a few years later, where his refusal to engage in fights with unfavorable odds resulted in their eventual failure. Even so, at the age of fifteen both him and his team were highly skilled for their age group. Their first failure didn't seem particularly meaningful, and there was always next year, right?

In the months following their failed exam, the dice of fortune turned against him. One of his teammates had his father disappear (supposedly abducted by priests) and was forced home to take care of his family. Likewise, their jounin sensei ended up pulled into the war against the priests, resigning from his team leading duties to help deal with the threat. The team was officially dissolved shortly afterwords, and Motonubu was thrust into an entirely new team as a replacement. Gone were the days where he could relax- his new team was composed of two freshly promoted genin and a sensei eager to throw the kids to the dogs every chance he got.

It would be another three years of bitter failures and hard-fought victories before the team would be allowed to compete in the chuunin exams. During those years Motonubu's latent ruthlessness came to full fruition. A combination of hard threats and flattery cemented the older genin as the team leader, while at the same time he also rigorously trained himself physically to make up for his crippling deficiencies. Motonubu's cruel tactics helped turn difficult fights in his favor, allowing his team to perform amazingly in the exams while also permanently branding Motonubu's as a nasty shinobi to cross paths with. His strong performance earned him a promotion to chuunin at the age of eighteen.

What should have been a celebratory moment for the Sawamatsu family immediately soured when word of their son's unscrupulous behavior reached Gion. Motonubu's enemies were spread even to Gion, and it didn't take long for the truth about his shady behavior and abusive personality to reach the ears of the High City. Worst of all, in the last few years Motonubu had accumulated an enormous debt due to a developed dependency on gambling and alcohol. For the Sawamatsu family, their prodigal and esteemed shinobi son was apparently the same old sleazy asshole (an exceptionally efficient one, but that was beside the point). Damage control went into effect immediately. Motonubu's remaining assets were frozen and the family scrambled to distance themselves from him as much as possible. His father demanded that Motonubu stop his shinobi work and take up more a more pedestrian job- an idea the new chuunin not only vehemently rejected, but also threw back in the face of the family by openly feeding the rumors of his degenerate behavior. Mud was slung in all directions for about a month before the feud escalated to a point where the only recourse was amputation. Motonubu found himself cut off from his family entirely, kicked out of the house and stripped of any amount of residual wealth he hadn't squandered. For all intents and purposes, Motonubu was no longer part of the Sawamatsu clan. The change was largely material- the shinobi hadn't ever truthfully been considered family since he started his career as as shinobi. Of course, now they had the papers to enforce it.

His achievements more or less plateaued after that. The next five years of his chuunin career were marked by periods of temporary yet rousing success followed by reputation and bank account destroying mistakes, always dragging him back down to square one. Without an extravagant amount of his family's cash to waste, most of his free time was spent training in the harsh heat of the desert in order to boost his battle prowess. When his paycheck did come around, it is inevitably wasted on the same old vice, sending him back down to rock bottom. A naturally brutal personality, Motonubu fell right into line with SUNA soldiers after the division reorganization. His current rank seems set in stone for the moment, as his bad and constantly growing record tends to stifle any thoughts of promotion.

The release of Sunagakure's criminals provided Motonubu with yet another opportunity to practice his personal brand of brutality and immediately destroy himself as a result. When the call came, he had been among the first on the streets cutting through the chaos and into the prisoners. The few working alongside him noticed his inappropriate sanguine grin while destroying his targets, right up until he was surrounded and gutted after dropping his guard and underestimating the sheer number of maniacs they were dealing with. A timely retreat and rescue by nearby shinobi saved his live from ending prematurely, but it would only be weeks of recovery later before Motonubu could even stubbornly grumble a "thanks" to his saviors. His wounded pride refused to heal as easily as his body, and as penance for his failure his tactics and personality have only blackened further. Perhaps the only positive to arise from his brush with death was a small but growing begrudging respect for his fellow soldiers. How long this sentiment will last is still very questionable.

Although officially no longer affiliated with his family, he continues to call himself "Motonubu of the Sawamatsu" as a final insult to his family's name.
