Default Retinue Cleanup

Mossy, moist tunnel walls glistened in the dim yellow emergency lighting. Underfoot scurried diseased rodents, a litany of cave insects, and the occasional mysterious puddle. This particular cavern shrank and grew seemingly at random, a far cry from the orderly main tunnels that connected Sector One to the old main source of water for Amegakure, the Capital Channel. In medical terms one might call this a capillary, an offshoot that was perhaps once used for maintenance or storage.

Josuke quite liked it here. The lonely pathways of Amegakure always put him at ease. On the surface an attack could come from any direction, severely taxing his ability to plan for every contingency. Here in the dank maze of twists and turns enemies might appear from from the front or the back, but that was it. Life was so much easier when the only options were forward or backward!

Unfortunately he couldn't enjoy himself today. After an encounter with the pestilence filled Maeda clan Josuke kept getting embroiled in their antics. The karamushi parasites they carried were very unlikely to infect or kill him, but that was no reason not to be on constant alert. Even now a protective shell of chakra kept disease at bay. He would take no chances.

A heavy tank on his back sloshed with parasiticidal liquid. A tube ran from the tank to a small nozzle, which he used to spray the walls as he slowly paced the length of the passageway. Apparently a few Maeda genin got in a scrap with the Capital Channel Crew and chunks of the area were now laden with their tainted disease. Hence the medic's presence. Also hence the one named Maeda Ten, tagging along to supervise. His job was to clean. Her job was to kill anything that might harbor the parasite.

With a heavy breath into his gas mask, Josuke turned towards the chuunin behind him. “This is the end of our designated area. Did any infected rats get past you?”

Ten had just finished impaling a couple of the infected rats that ran around the tunnels of the dank and dreary underbelly of Amegakure. Ten was known for her skills within the Maeda clan and despite her inexperience she had seen a lot of things that would otherwise make a young girl faint. However, she was born into this kind of thing and anything related to death, decapitation, and gore was a regular occurrence for the young woman. Of course, with the help of the medic there would be no need to worry as long as they didn’t come in contact with any type of horde of beasts or karamushi infected animals.

Ten looked over to her partner and for a moment wondered how the kid was still alive. She had heard stories of the boy and a lot of them ended up with him being impaled, disemboweled, or even worse. However, the boy continued to thrive under all conditions and to Ten that was an amazing feat.

”Yea, that seems to be the last of them. I think that we got all of them and I hope that none of them escaped; I would hate to think of what would happen to me.” Ten stated as she peered around the dimly lit tunnel.

Then all the sudden a large crash came across the room. Jutting back Ten investigated and saw that a few cans had fallen off a makeshift table. It was nothing to worry about, but then an infected rat with multiple karamushi appendages ran into a part of the tunnel they had not been down.

”Shit, Josuke, we need to get that rat, it isn’t like the other ones. It has evolved and I cant imagine it being a good thing if it remains alive.” Ten stated as she ran off to get her prize.

“That's not our...” His teammate was gone before he could even grumble out a response. “...our area.” These Maeda and their incessant chasing after danger! Maeda Shin, a former teammate of Josuke's, had been the same way, going out of his way to endanger himself out of some sense of...whatever it was that drove the Maeda to do these things. Brain damage, maybe.

With the liquid on his back going slish slosh Josuke scuttled after Ten, spraying their tracks as they went. If he had his way they would just seal the tunnel and fill it with nerve gas. It wasn't as though there was much here to care about anyway. Anyone who didn't live in Amegakure proper was sewer trash. Case in point: as the two advanced down the side tunnel, the lighting and walls slowly shifted from a rocky material to more metallic pipes and rusted walkways. They were getting closer to the main channel.

“Maeda Ten,”
Josuke wheezed while slowly depleting his chemical tank. “There are a hundred places a rat could hide, so we shouldn't go too far. And we are approaching CCC controlled territory.” Fighting the CCC is what started this clean-up process in the first place. Josuke did not want to be responsible for causing an even bigger mess.

Ten didn’t really care what Josuke had stated about the CCC. She had faced the military and an underground organization wasn’t going to stop him from doing her duties as a Maeda and making sure the village was safe from her infection. Other then the fact that the sewers were lined with debris both human and garbage alike Ten enjoyed the damp and dark system of tunnels. To be honest she rather be here then in her compound.

She was starting to feel like she could not trust too many people after her run in with the cult of the karimushi. Soon enough the two of them came to an opening. It was a large room with a multitude of paths that could be taken. Ten had counted three and it was too dangerous to split so Ten had to make a choice. She could only hope that she would make the right one. However, before she could start convening with her partner a sound came echoing from one of the paths. It was human and as the seconds passed it came closer and closer.

”Quick, Josuke, hide behind these barrels.” Ten stated as she pulled the boy with her.”[/color]

Out form the tunnel came two men. They seemed to be ordinary citizen but there was no telling what their allegiance was. They began speaking more and more but their words were barely audiable and Ten was unable to hear what they were saying. It took only a few minutes but they passed the two shinobi.

”Alright so we are not alone down here in the sewers and I don’t really trust anyone other then you and my two feet. I say we be careful and kill this rat as soon as possible. What do you think?” Ten stated as she patted the boy on the back, careful not to puncture the large canister.

Grossgrossgrossgrossgrossgross! His layers of clothing protected him from the vile touch of the Maeda girl but that didn't stop his skin from crawling like crazy. No matter how much chakra or fabric might coat him Josuke simply wouldn't abide such casual contact. He recoiled away from the Maeda's grip as one would an open sewage tank. He quickly sprayed down his arm with the bleach nozzle, then made a hand seal to henge into a random pile of garbage while the two men passed. Both looked about as young as Josuke, and wore casual clothes more like what one would see on youths in the streets of Sector One. They probably weren't CCC. Then again, who could tell these days?

When his teammate approached again he dispelled his disguise then held out his sprayer to repel her advance. “There are a million rats in the sewer, Maeda Ten.” His gas mask turned towards the tunnel the strangers disappeared down. There was more than one type of rat in these parts. “Randomly running down tunnels like a schoolchild is a terrible plan.” Chasing after an infected animal didn't even strike him as worthy of the risk of getting ambushed by thugs or homeless vagrants.

Sensing that his teammate would be unreasonably adamant about finding and killing a single pest, Josuke tried to offer a compromise. “You should understand how these...karamushi...things operate. We should try and draw it out to us, rather than hoping it randomly jumps out in front of us. What could we use as bait for a trap?”

Poisoning vermin would be easy enough with Josuke's medical skills and a bit of preparation. The only question was if this Maeda chuunin would decide to continue with her ad-hoc approach to their limited mission objectives.

”The karamushi seek the weak and willing to be infected. The worms themselves are very simple types of creature. They seek to live, reproduce, and eat, that is all. I think you got a good idea with making another rat look poisoned and weak. I think we will go with that. However, I think you will have to do the poisoning.” Ten stated as she looked continuously for the rat that she was hoping would “jump out” in front of them.

However, Ten knew that it would be a long shot because she also knew that the karamushi were not the type of parasite that would just willingly be caught. The unfortunate thing was that she was not the cause of the infection; if that was the case she would be able to track them.

Ten would have to wait and see what her partner would do and she knew from experience he wasn’t the most willing to fight, nor the most skilled either. She would be in a real disadvantage if anything was to happen to them and she would feel pretty bad if she was the only one that survived.

Ten looked for a few moments and out of the corner of her eyes she spotted their bait, he wasn’t the most plump looking rat but it would certainly do.

”Oy, I think this would be a fine bait for our karamushi rat. I think that our target didn’t really go too far so lets hope this is good enough.” Ten stated as she threw the rat at Josuke only realizing how bad of an idea it was after she had performed the action.

She could only hope that the man would catch the rat, otherwise he would have to be the bait and Ten knew that he would not like that.

Well, how about that! Maeda Ten was quite reasonable for a shinobi, ignoring the earlier frantic tunnel chase. Josuke didn't drop his guard though, even as he began preparing. This was the pair's first mission together and you could never judge a ninja by their cover. Most definitely not the ones with a hive of parasites living inside them.

From a medical scroll he released a few simple tools and some basic chemicals. Like an expert baker he assembled his poison. A little bit of yellow cave moss, ground up with some potassium and suspended in a tincture of arnica...engrossed as he was, Josuke didn't notice the flying mammal until it was too late. The creature smacked him with a soft squeak, and as Josuke was wont to do, he panicked.

In less than a second he pulled out multiple senbon and pin-cushioned the rat before it even touched the ground. The beast let out it's own terrified noise but Josuke was quick to put it out of its misery with the heel of his boot. His mask stared its expressionless stare at his partner. No wonder karamushi outbreaks occurred so often.

After a few seconds of tense silence he resumed his grim work. He scooped what remained of the rat up with his gloved hands and using his poison, kneaded the meat and concoction up into a kind of nasty poultice. He added in some sugar as well, which would hopefully hide the bitter taste.

“Here.” Josuke walked, slowly, towards his partner, and held out half of the rat meatball to her. “Go down the tunnels and spread this out. This way we can poison many more rats.” He hesitated. “Don't eat it. And wash your hands after you handle it.”

He turned towards one of the branching tunnels in the intersection they sat in. “I'll go make more. If you find your target, radio me. Don't do anything risky alone.”

Ten felt a little stupid as the boy continued to lecture her on how to properly handle poison. It was obvious to Ten that she was making a fool of herself and Josuke felt the same. However, that would not let that hurt her and she willingly began to spread the poison throughout the other tunnels. There was no way that this parasite rat would not be attracted to the perfect meat. However, there was some worry as to whether or not the karamushi would be smart enough to realize that the ball of meat would not be a suitable host. The parasites weren’t stupid and they knew whether or not something could be a likely host. However, he would allow Josuke to think that he has a good idea.

Diving down the tunnels everything seemed fine. The dampness of the grated sewers continued to make Ten a little uncomfortable. She had seen what can come of these karamushi infected animals and she was not really willing to face down a beast like she had previously. Other then that she was willing to take on anything. She had seen a lot of weird shit in her time and she was no stranger to danger.

Finally, she did what she was told and went back to the hub of the sewer system that they had originally came from.

”Yo, Josuke, I placed all the bait where you told me to. I think that this might work but I don’t really know. Maybe we could like meet up and see what the next course of action could be.” Ten stated as she continued to wait for her teammate.

What she didn’t tell him was that she infected the balls of meat with her strain of karamushi as well. She had to make sure that if the rat did take the bait, that she would be able to track the little monster.

Nothing short of complete annihilation of every rodent in the sewer system would have satisfied Josuke. Poison felt like a half-measure. A good dose of napalm would have been vastly preferable and killed far more, but...

He spoke into the communication unit with his flat, unemotional tone. “We are hunting rats. This is not a complicated job. Don't make it harder than it has to be. Just look and see if your mutant shows up among the corpses.” Josuke's footsteps echoed as his boots clattered against he metal grating below. Each electric light grew father apart the deeper he moved. When his bait did run out there wasn't any telling how far down he had traveled.

Taking a heavy breath he turned back around. Now came the march back up, and down, and up, and down again, until some dead rats turned up. It promised to be a long, and grueling, and boring job.

“Oh.” Not ten steps down the way he came Josuke stumbled upon a twitching, dying rodent next to a nice chunk of rat meat. A quick diagnosis of it showed it to be free of karamushi spawn but he was quite pleased with the efficacy of his toxin. Another dozen steps led him to another slowly suffocating animal. Another half dozen, to three. Finding them all free of the Maeda's pestilence Josuke continued onward, snaking down a tunnel littered with perishing rodents. It wasn't until he stopped to renew his protective disinfecting medical technique while atop another group of corpses that he recognized the problem.

His feet scuffled backwards as he retraced his steps. All these tunnels looked the same but there was no denying it. This wasn't the way Josuke had originally walked through. There was no poison going down this way.

The toxin wasn't killing these rats. Something else had and laid a trail for the chuunin to follow. Almost...purposefully. Like a trap. Like a rat trap.

As if the sewer itself was dying, all the yellow emergency lights flickered, then blinked off. The entire area was plunged into darkness. All that could be heard was the sound of running water and the distant, but unmistakable skittering of a million tiny legs on the metal floor.

There were a lot, a lot of dead rats and although it was the whole purpose for why josuke and Ten were down in the sewers, it only became a problem when Ten realized that the rats had died from something else. The half eaten rat would be a normal occurrence and sight down in the depths of Rain Country; but this was different. The half chunk of rats made Ten wonder how they were being eaten and by what.

As she continued down her path she heard the sounds of skittering, it was not one set of legs but a multitude of bodies that seemed to be rushing towards her location. She knew at that moment that there was something different about this sound. Although it sounded a little like water it was completely different in the simplest sense. It had some type of sound to it that was unnatural.

Preparing for whatever might come her way chitin started to erupt from her skin and cover her body. It did not hurt the young Maeda but it looked like a painful transformation. As the flickering of the lights created the perfect atmosphere a rat lunged out at Ten. With a quick swipe it was cut in half. Small worm like parasites wiggled out of the corpse. It seemed that Ten had succeeded in her mission.

However, in that moment another rat jumped out, then another, then two more and then there were ten rats in front of her. Without much time to think it looked like the woman was now overwhelmed with rat monsters. Each one was trying to infect her with their karamushi.

Even though Ten knew that she could not die from an infection, she certainly could die from bites. Rushing out she ran towards her original location of the sewer hub.

”Josuke, we have a problem, a large amount of rats, no a horde of rats are now infected and chasing after me. I am heading back to our meeting place. Get there as fast as possible and watch out.” Ten stated in heavy breath as she rushed towards her destination.
