Death and medicine went hand in hand, but even the skilled doctors and nurse practitioners had little experience with outright murder. Numerous bodies now lay in the resting ward where many patients recovered after harrowing treatments. Three, four, now five men with throats cut open lay on gurneys as the professionals of the camp hurried to try and save them. It would be of no use.

“Who did this?”
A guard yelled at the cowering patients still present. “Did anyone see what the perpetrator looked like?”

”Witnesses are saying,” the assistant frantically flipped through his clipboard. ”It was a female patient, long brown hair. Or maybe short. It’s really not clear-“

“Is everyone else safe?”
A few more guards burst into the room, which set off another round of panicked screeching. The camp was set up to deal with pandemics and outbreaks and disasters of all kinds, but hadn’t been prepared for a direct assault.

A thunderous voice shook from outside. “Be brave, my people!” Cardinal Yoemon pushed his way past the growing crowd. “We will overcome even this!”

It only took once glance for the Cardinal to recognize what had happened. “These unfortunate victims, these men,” he shouted out as though speaking to everyone at once. “They are –were- all Rain Militia members, were they not?”

Nobody seemed quite sure of the correct answer to give. Yoemon wasn’t looking for one anyway. “I know this to be true. This dying man here,” he gestured to one of the twitching bodies that still hadn’t expired. “Helped me to find my way this morning. Step away, Good Doctors. His time has not yet come!”

With that Yoemon knelt beside the gravely injured man and placed both his massive hands on the wound. The nearby medics, at a complete loss as to what to do next, just watched. “Great spirits!” Yoemon’s voice roared. “I beseech you!”

”Grant this soul the Band of Life!

Oh, no. What a crockload of garbage.

From behind Cardinal Yoemon, concealed by the crowd, stood the medical assistant. He flipped the clipboard over and released a hail of needles from his other hand, all towards Yoemon.

Who knew what these miko were capable of? Could they save the life of a dead man? Either way, Josuke hadn't spent all morning sabotaging things just to watch his assassination fail at the hands of an old man in a dress.

Sero witnessed what was happening in slow motion and it wasn’t that much of a surprise that he was on the sidelines for this one. There was something to this whole thing that made Sero itch at action, but another point in his mind allowed him to stay calm. What was happening was supposed to happen. He was not going to be a person that ruined the Companies mission again and this was something he would have to live with.

It was obvious by the way the cardinal spoke that he was on the side of militia for Rain and that they had even helped the cardinal arrive in the camp. Another thing that made Sero more obvious to the fact was the members that surrounded the camp and the injured that seemed slow to get up, but had a fierce look on their face. Some were civilians, but with a closer look Sero noticed military garb on a lot of members. Another thing he had noticed was the fact that no one seemed to be shinobi.

In that moment Sero was pleased to know that he did not confide in the cardinal to tell him that he was a snow shinobi. Then again, who knew? Maybe the Rain Country would like to have a missing nin from Yukigakure. It would surely make a surprise for the shinobi of Amegakure.

There was a sudden stop in time as Sero witnessed the assistant from before take out senbon and launch them at the large miko. It was at that moment that Sero recognized the man, he was someone that Sero had once helped and it was starting to feel really weird at this moment. In fact, he almost killed the kid in their previous exchange. It was interesting to see but he now liked the idea of watching. That was as long as the man continued to live. Otherwise, Sero would have to intervene.

What a bloody fiasco this turned into. Such as simple job –kill a Rain Militia captain hiding in a refugee camp- now threatened to turn into some kind of diplomatic nightmare. All the careful, incremental steps Josuke took to make the deaths look natural were now all for naught! If only that rotten priest and Snow shinobi hadn’t shown up!

Oh, well. That’s life. No point getting upset about it now when his own life was on the line. He’d ensure the death of the last militia member and flee before things got even more risky. Already another few needles found their way into his palm. Once the priest got out of the way…

never take your eye off the ball, Josuke’s father once told him in a misguided parenting attempt. The chuunin's focus on looking out for the Snow ninja blinded him to the threat right in front of him. Cardinal Yoemon destroyed the distance between separating them in a second. A large, powerful hand at once crushed the chuunin’s face, blinding him.

”The wicked,”
the priest intoned, ”Shall be judged accordingly.

Pressure mounted on the chuunin’s skull. How did he dodge the needles? How did he even know I threw them? Those thoughts Josuke put aside for now. Here came the big one. Is this old guy going kill me?

A long list of bad ideas shot through Josuke’s mind. Try to squeeze out a jutsu? No way, Yoemon would retaliate before he could finish. Stab the dude’s arm? Are you kidding, those sucker were as thick as tree trunks! Beg for mercy? Really? Was that the best a trained Amegakure soldier could come up with?

Endanger innocents.
Yes. Perfect. The previously prepared needles Josuke at once flung towards the crowd. With the Cardinal’s giant hand blocking his vision he couldn’t see or aim, but he really didn’t need to. The priest at once recognized Josuke’s plan.

With a vicious grunt Cardinal Yoemon released the chuunin. The patients screamed. The guards didn’t know what to do. The priest raised his hands and delivered a thunderous shout.

”I deny!”

A bright light briefly flashed, and the needles fell harmlessly to the ground. Josuke scampered out of the tent like an embarrassed child.

Sero continued to watch as the awkward shinobi of Rain tried his best against the miko of the Country. It seemed like the shinobi was outclassed and the cardinal was going to really do some damage to the whole situation. Either way, Sero would not interfere. He had to remember why he was thre and he would continue to remember why he was there as a phantom pain of his arms started to envelop his head. His psyche was broken just a little after his meeting with the HR department of The Company, and he was not willing to go back to that awful place.

Then as the needles fell to the floor in a bright light the Rain shinobi leapt out of the campground just as quick. It seemed that the miko had more powers then healing and it was a good thing that Sero did not try to fight or get involved. Otherwise, who knew how strong the man would show. Either way, what Sero remembered about the Rain shinobi was that, he was not the strongest one he had known and he certainly was not the bravest.

No sooner as the rain shinobi started to run away did a familiar voice echo through the ear of Sero.

”So, have you learned anything yet about the miko over there? The Company is not going to like it if we are here for so long and we don’t figure anything out. I give you till the end of the night to find out the stance on that mans ideals and we will head out of here with information or not. Just remember the last time you failed, it did not turn out as well as you would hope it would. This time it might be a little worse.” The babysitter added his own two sense to the situation.

However, he was right, they had been there far too long.

The mud slipped out from under him as Josuke darted away from the tents. The Cardinal’s baritone voice roared out from behind. ”Surround and contain the deviant!

Multiple white-robed shrine maidens ran out into the pouring rain to chase after Josuke. He slid to a stop as they formed a perimeter around him. Could miko stop him from escaping?

No.
Ridiculous. He’d never heard of such a thing. The fear gripped his heart nonetheless. His hands flew together and brushed the dirt at his feet. Strands of brown gunk swirled around the chuunin. The rain above the shinobi parted as his mud creation pieced itself together overhead. It took the form of what looked to be the skeleton of a dragon, with long bony wings and Josuke crouched down right inside its rib cage. It spat a few mud balls at the surrounding miko, who dodged but did nothing else.

”What would possess a man,”
A wet but still threatening Cardinal Yoemon stepped into sight. ”To attack the helpless? To extinguish a life which cannot fight back?

Oh no, not a lecture. Josuke got enough of these back in Amegakure. His dragon’s skull twisted and snapped at one of the shrine maidens who tried to approach. The militia captain- Josuke needed to ensure the militia captain died. He could do it but he needed to stall. Even drenched in cold rain, he began to sweat.

Josuke was alone. Utterly, helplessly alone.

Nothing new there.

“It’s judgement, like you said.”
His voice was shaky and lacked strength but still carried in the rain. “Those men killed my friends.” Not true since Josuke didn’t have any friends, but now wasn’t the time to split hairs. “And look, you see this?” The chuunin held up his palm which could be seen to be missing several fingers. “I've been tortured. Hunted. The Rain Militia deserve what they get.”

”No soul deserves death!
Cardinal Yoemon bellowed. ”Anyone of sound mind and clear conscience can repent! We of the Hontou no Itami Shrine will not tolerate hostility on neutral ground-”

Dying would be better than listening to this nonsense. Josuke took wheezing breaths as his eyes scanned for the Snow nin. What was that guy doing here anyway? Did he work for the shrine? The two had an unfortunate meeting in the past. Then again meetings with Josuke typically ended badly, as Cardinal Yoemon too would soon learn.

Before Sero could answer his partner or should he say babysitters question something came into focus. It wasn't clear right away what it was but it also wasn't going to be the most obvious thing to see when its first being summoned. The quagmire that was created around the triage encampment had made it a cesspool of dirty and bloody mud, something that would have clearly been prominent and expected in Rain Country. However, what troubled Sero was not the rain or the mud. It was the fact that the mud was starting to move on its own. It wasn't just benign but instead it was turning into something malignant.

Sero himself had never seen such a construct but he could fathom the depth of what was currently happening there and it was something that was not at all good. It was something that to the eyes of Sero would turn out bad. However, he could still do nothing. He could still just watch. If he showed himself as shinobi there would be a lot of questioning, a lot of fear and a lot of things that just didn't make sense. Worse so, being a missing shinobi from Snow would have escalated the situation further. So Sero stopped and he thought.

He thought as the construct lifted from the ground and screamed. He thought what would the priest do. If the opportunity arrived he would help fight but he would have to be careful. He would have to make sure it didnt seem like he was skilled. No, for now he would wait and see where the rain shinobi went. If at all possibly he would follow. He would help to alleviate the pain this man might face. Or possibly, Sero would stay and watch, allow the rain shinobi to run away. He was hear for the cardinal anyways.

As precious seconds ticked by streaks of mud dripped off the dragon and down onto Josuke. The time to act was now, before the priest finished his speech or that Snow nin did something.

Without warning the dragon collapsed in on itself and smothered Josuke. The surrounding miko all let out a shout of warning and Cardinal Yoemon stopped his lecture midsentence. “-benediction of- hold, friends!” He rose his arm up into the rain. “Arm yourselves! The devil stirs!”

The mud twisted itself back up into its shape again and gave a mighty flap of its wings, sending rain droplets towards Yoemon. He raised his arms to block it in anticipation of something stronger. Nothing else came. One of the other mikos shouted as a mud ball soared over her head and hit a nearby tent. ”Threatening innocent lives again? What a fiend! Friends, disable that beast! I will deal with the shinobi myelf!

On command each miko equipped what looked to be ceremonial longbows. The dragon stampeded forward. The perimeter of mikos drew and fired their arrows at once, hitting the large mud target with ease. It slowed and cracked under each impact.

What is this? Josuke stood back and glanced at his dragon as its movements became sluggish and easy to avoid. Parts of it began to slough off in the rain. A sealing technique? They’re sealing my dragon? Were the miko that strong, or was Josuke that weak?

”I am your challenger, villain!”

Oh, right, the priest. Josuke’s attention snapped back towards the (rather unstealthy) charge of Yoemon. Again the priest moved with alacrity uncommon to men his age. The curtain of rain even appeared to part as the mighty cardinal surged ahead. But Josuke wouldn’t be caught off guard a second time! The cardinal threw a flurry of open palms aimed to catch the chuunin in his grip.

Josuke ducked, then pivoted, then jumped, timing each movement to the cardinal’s. One on one like this the difference in their abilities became clearer; Yoemon possessed exceptional physical strength and speed, but seemed to still be holding back. Is he underestimating me, or actually trying to not kill me? Realizing this Josuke’s hands flew together and chakra flared up in his muddy legs. Yoemon’s next swipe met the air and in the following instant the chuunin stood several dozen feet behind him. The priest was wide open.

He released a kunai with a small paper tag wrapped around it. Cardinal Yoemon wouldn’t be able to dodge in time.

Sero watched he fight as it continued, he dodged the attacks of the dragon, and soon enough that beast was defeated. It seemed like the monster was more for show, then it was for defeating an enemy. That was an enemy of the caliber that the rain shinobi was currently facing. There was no doubt that Sero was doing everything right but it was a little worrisome that the whole situation was getting a little out of hand. The rain shinobi he remembered seeing was not the same as the one he was witnessing now. The last time they met, Sero felt like he had to save the kid, this time it looked like he was holding his own.

That was however, until he took a swift attack and went backwards a little bit. Sero was also worried that not only would the miko die, but the people around him. Who knew if anyone around them was actually a snow shinobi. Maybe they were seeking refuge in this country as well. It was not uncommon for refugees to escape as far away as possible.

Sero found himself closer and closer to the action till he was almost right where they were fighting. It was at that moment that Sero knew he had to do something. If he allowed for this man to die the Company would never forgive him, and no doubt he would be killed in the instant as well. That is why when he saw the explosive tag come out from behind the rain shinobi Sero rushed towards the cardinal. Though he was still weak from the previous attack he was able to make it just in time. Just in time to push the man out of the way. His body was large, but the surprise push and the adrenaline coursing through Sero allowed for him to push him back. It was also enough that Sero’s body would block the explosion.

The burning and concussive feeling erupted into the body of Sero, however, he was still alive.

Where the hell did that Snow shinobi come from? Here Josuke thought he’d been keeping track of his surroundings but, nope, right at the most critical moment the man leapt out to save the Cardinal’s life. The explosion detonated but that hardly mattered now. The chuunin lost his chance.

One more!
Yes, maybe that was the ticket! No reason he couldn’t throw a second explosive note. His hand went back into his pocket before the smoke could clear. Two birds with one kunai, the Snow nin and priest! And his mud hand could finish off the captain, making this mission a resounding success!

For about a second and a half Josuke felt something he never really got the chance to feel: the elation of having outplayed an opponent to achieve a crushing victory.

Sheer, distilled terror quickly replaced that dopamine rush. An angry, two-hundred pound wall of muscle and sanctimony burst from a still swirling eddy of smoke and rain like a stampeding bull.

Cardinal Yoemon said nothing. He simply flew towards the chuunin with a look of rage plastered across his wrinkled face. No way, I’ve got to be faster, I’m using- Nope, not by a long shot. The priest’s heavily damaged robes could not even keep up with the man's speed, leaving tatters in the air in his wake. Was that steam coming off his fists?!

Instinct took over and Josuke pushed on his feet, trying to jump backwards. Too late. Yoemon SLAMMED both his fists into the chuunin's ribcage with a sickening, body deforming thump.

Gouken Style

D o u b l e B o n e

A ring of water and air expanded outward from the impact site. Josuke felt his skeleton painfully shift. In the next instant the force of the blow launched him off his feet and into the air as if he weighed as much as a feather.

Josuke's broken body crashed into a chain-link fence that marked the border of the refugee camp. It twisted and deformed around him as he crumbled into it. Josuke, sprawled out like a rag doll, lay motionless.

”…rest in peace.”
Cardinal Yoemon turned back to where Sero had fallen. Now he spoke in a tired, exhausted voice. “Soldier, can you stand?”

The blast was ringing in the head of Sero, his whole body trembling from the blast. It had made his bones crack and move within him, something that seemed very uncomfortable and something that Sero had yet experienced. Of course, it did not compared to the torture he would have had to endure if the cardinal was killed. Maybe everyone around him would think that Sero did the good deed so that he could be recognized as a hero. The truth was that Sero was just afraid of his employers and what they would do to him if he had failed.

For a moment he looked up to survey the situation, only he was met with his babysitter from the Company. His eyes peered into the soul of Sero, and then a smile washed over his face and a nod of the head signaled that he approved of Sero’s action. It was something that worried Sero quite a bit but he was happy that he was now safe from the Company.

Looking backwards Sero was able to glimpse at the attack made by his target. It was bone crushing and the blast from the attack almost seemed to shroud the area in oppressive power. Sero was surprised at a few things. One, the man was old, he seemed weak, and his attitude was that of peace. However, his power seemed to rival that of a shinobi and Sero was quite impressed. He didn’t think he had met someone like that on his travels but he was glad he didn’t have to face the man.

Then reality crept in. Sero was strong as well and with his summons would more then likely kill everyone within that camp. The Rain shinobi was a chuunin and if Sero remembered right a weak one. If it wasn’t for his situation he would have killed the shinobi himself.

”I am alright, those rain shinobi sure are bad. I am glad you and the other miko are on our side.” Sero stated, baiting an answer to whether or not he was on the side of the military.
