Default {Valley}Calamity Begins

The dreams started to intensify, the idea that there was something greater happening brought enxiety, fear, and excitement to Sosu, he knew that he was meant for something and every since his dream of the peculiar man, he knew that there was something that he was meant for. He knew that he was meant for greatness. Nonetheless, he would bide his time till he was called upon. He would know what it meant o be great, but he would have to wait for such feelings. He wasn’t the only one. AS he awoke that day he was met by not only a messanger but a personal secretary of the Kazekage. It was decided that Sosu would go with a member of Kohonagauke to the Valley Country where he would reach the summit of Calamity mountain.

He didn’t really know what the whole deal was but he had a feeling that his dream had already outlined what he must do. So he waited. He would wait in Engustu until his superior would arrive. Of course, the word superior meant someone stronger then him and at that point he already hated the idea. However, he would let it pass because in his innards he felt like this was something different; this was something bigger then he could ever imagine. He would meet this man and when the yhad finally made contact they would head to something that was different. A smog had enveloped the area and it was up to Sosu and numerous amounts of people to figure out the problem. Though he didn’t ask for what would happen next he was surely ready for it. He would proclaim his name as a savior of Sunagukare, even if it killed him.

The only place to go was to the West, that is where the heaviest of the smog laid rest.

Ryu was no stranger to nightmares caused by unnatural causes. The bijuu within him had caused him to live a difficult childhood riddled by constant sleep deprivation, strange memory flashes and constant nightmares. It affected his mood and ability to focus but in time he finally managed to get past it. The nightmares stopped fazing him and they eventually stopped altogether. At least the unnatural ones did.

However in recent times Ryu started having a recurring dream that always seemed to be cut short. It definitely wasn’t a natural one and even though it didn’t disturb the jinchuuriki at first, he eventually started to get concerned by it but there was no explaining to what went on through his head. The same exact scenes were replayed in his sleep for a while and that morning was no different and it felt as real as ever. However, on that specific time it felt rather… relevant.

Earlier in the day Ryu had received a summoning from the Grand Oracle (through the hokage), requesting the jounin’s presence all the way at the peak of the mysterious mountain. He was asked to travel there with a fellow shinobi from the Hidden Sand. As Kojirou understood, both of them were requested to be present among several others. They were just going go climb as a pair since the political climate allowed it and so that they would keep each other safe.

It seemed that Sosu was waiting for Ryu just before the smogged area. For a any shinobi in general, climbing a mountain was a mundane task, but Ryu received quite a few warning regarding the smog. He heard it being described with several words such as ‘freaky’ or ‘fucks with the mind’. Of course such descriptions provided little help and Ryu would was going to have to witness it for himself and be the judge of that.

“Sosu.” He spoke blandly. “I’m Ryu.”

Ryu was much taller then Sosu, by at least half a foot and the man was also quite large compared to the slender body of the young chuunin. In the eyes of Sosu this meant that the man probably knew how to fight and as far as he was concerned there was going to be a lot of fighting going on for them all. Sosu could only hope that his assumptions were true and that they would all be alright.

”I am happy to meet you Ryu, I would be Sosu and this would be where we start this little expedition. I assume we both no the path so neither of us should lead and lets continue as equals.” Sosu stated with confidence in his voice. He knew the man was a Jounin, he knew he was from Kohonagakure, but that was all that he would give the man. As far as Sosu was concerned, he was just as strong and since he was from another village he would not allow him to be his superior; that honor was only held by Sunagakure shinobi.

Sosu felt like he should tell or at least as the man if he had the same dreams, maybe Ryu would ask him instead? Either way, Sosu made up his mind in that moment as they came upon what looked like a checkpoint.

”Hold! What is your business here?!” A man in a full plate of shining armor bellowed to the two shinobi. As a multitude of other people had their arrows drawn and ready to fire at the blink of an eye.

”We were summoned by the High Oracle, we are to meet upon the summit of the mountain!” Sosu yelled back.

At first nothing happened but as the guards eyes widened his hand fell to his side and the men with the bows laid down their weapons.

”Get Purifier Guardian Fusako, she will want to meet these two men. Come you two, we are going to meet your destiny.” The guard stated.

One the greetings were exchanged Sosu was quick to make a suggestion that they were equals. Such a request seemed petty and insecure for Ryu as he didn’t even find it to be an issue worth bringing up… mostly because he would have been the default leader, being the jounin of the two but he also didn’t care because it was just a glorified hiking trip until they were to find their true objective from the high wardens. The jounin simply shrugged in response, showing his lack of interest in the matter. He believed that true leaders would naturally emerge on the field if there was ever a need for one regardless of official appointments.

The two shinobi were met by a squad that consisted of a fully armored soldier and a bunch of rangers, all demanding to know what the shinobi were doing there. Sosu did the talking and explained the reason for their presence to the group. They seemed to be convinced and gave permission to the two shinobi to pass through and meet the “Purifier Guardian” whatever that was.

Fusako quickly arrived to assist the prophesized champions and assigned them an escort; which was a woman from the group of rangers that they initially encountered. The blonde woman stepped forward, accepting her task.

“I’m Mariko. Please, follow me.” The escort told them.

Ryu immediately started walking behind the woman as she was going to be the guide. He noticed that they were headed towards the thick mist ahead and because of how thick it was, he couldn’t even tell how steep the road was. However he could tell that something was off. The mist didn’t feel quite right. It was mostly a gut feeling, but Ryu assumed that it wasn’t completely natural and there just had to be something else behind it.

“Stick close together. This place is concerning”

When they were ready the two of them followed their guide. The mist was thick and it reeked of something out of this world. It wasn’t the smell you would normally notice but it seemed to be like something that entered the minds of the individuals that entered the mist. Sosu knew this was something important and he would be the person that would show his true strength. He had waited for something like this and as far as he was concerned there was no one else that was from his Village that was heading to this mountain resort of Miko. However, when he made it to the summit he would see if any other shinobi from SUnagakure was there. Even if they were, Sosu would show them up.

As the trio continued to walk towards the mist the air felt a little thin, the feeling seemed to kill his mind and it would be at this moment that he would summon his friend. Without much effort nor chakra Daiki, a husky was summoned.

Oy, where we going now?” Th dog barked towards Sosu as he went up to the other two members of the group. He wanted to smell them out and get his bearings down.

”Heading into that mist, that big scary mist. I think there is some shit that is going down and I need you” Sosu stated as he gave a pat on the head of the dog.

”Alright, that sounds fun” the dog stated as he continued by the side of Sosu, his spears holstered closely to his abdomen.

”We will enter the mist now, when we are in there don’t believe your eyes or your ears. This dark smog will play tricks on you. You follow my lead and we all get out alright. I have been here a few times.” The guide stated as his body began to become enveloped in dark smoke.

Sosu went ahead and summoned a dog, a creature that was part of a common house of summons but it was theoretically a very sound idea as dogs had an impeccable sense of smell and the line of sight was fairly poor due to the mis but Ryu wasn’t quite sure if such a mysterious mist had an effect on smells or not; it was going to up to the dog to determine that but either way, having a shinobi dog as company couldn’t have hurt.

Ryu walked ahead, maintaining a short distance between himself and the female guide, just as she instructed. The place was her area of expertise so it was a sound decision to simply follow her lead. The woman walked with confidence and she clearly knew where she was heading but shortly after venturing into the thick mist, it was as if the climate changed. It wasn't just the feeling of humidity, but something didn't feel right.

Don't trust your senses and don't be rash. This mist isn't natural and it will play tricks on you. ” Hamza warned.

Shortly after venturing in the mist the jinchuuriki started hearing whispers from every direction and the noise was steadily building up. Soon afterwards it started to become more like loud, nonstop murmurs as if he was in a crowded place. Ryu couldn't tell if the others were hearing the same thing but the guide was exactly as she was before so she was either unaffected or the mist affected them differently.

“Jinchuuriki!“ A single word was shouted from distance. It felt real but was it really?

”Don’t listen to the whispers” Mariko stated as he could tell that the two shinobi were on edge.

The creeping miasma was surrounding the three and the sounds of distance howling echoed through the deep valley. There was a feeling of being watched that washed over Sosu, as if someone was ready to pounce. However, there were only shadows, the creatures without the miasma darted in and out of sight.

”There is nothing this close to the outpost that can kill us. We will be safe till we reach the base of the mountain. That is where our true fight will begin.” Mariko continued to state as his path led the two shinobi.

”I don’t like this place boss. If I wasn’t so strong, I would worry myself.” Daiki stated as he continued to walk ever closer to his master.

”We will be fine, I am stronger then you, so if you trust in your strength you should trust in mine. Plus, I think that the other two are just as strong if not stronger if one was called here and the other is a warden to fight off the miasma.” Sosu continued to reassure his summon.

As the three of them continued the trees also began to warp in place, the rocks became boulders, the trees became shrubs. Everything seemed distorted to the eyes of Sosu, and then a voice rang out. But it wasn’t just a voice, it was a figure as well.

The shadowy apparition had no clear defining features but the voice sounded familiar. It was the voice of Renchinshin Hitoko. That was when Sosu’s mind stated to truly play tricks on him.

”Hey Mariko, this miasma, can it make us see things? What is this place and how did it come to be?” Sosu stated worried for the safety of the small caravan.

Mariko seemed to figure out what Ryu was going through and tried to reassure him regarding the whispers, so perhaps that part of the experience was a fairly common one. However she made no mention of anything else that the jounin had heard so he wasn’t quite sure who was affected by what exactly but the guide maintained her pace so the jinchuuriki assumed that nothing was going wrong.

Meanwhile Sosu kept comforting his summoned dogs, reassuring him of his own strength, but that didn’t really mean anything to Ryu because the dog was a puny one of a common house, so a shinobi being stronger than that was by no means a commendable feat.

You may hear and see all sorts of things. If you feel disoriented or lose track of me just stay in your place and let me know.” Mariko instructed. “We wouldn’t want you to accidentally stray off our path.

The instructions made sense to Ryu and it would have probably been the same sort of advice that he would have given but it surely was easier said than done, especially to someone who wasn’t nearly as experienced regarding supernatural things that messed with the brain.

As the group walked, Ryu smelled smoke somewhere around him and he was certain that something was burning so he turned around to look only to find a huge fireball flying right towards him. The jounin instinctively dodged the ball by hopping sideways and rolling on the ground only for the attack to hit Mariko, burning her alive. The jounin quickly got up and darted towards the woman and held his armored hand towards her, trying to extinguish the fire but nothing was happening. The fire was still going strong and he could he smell the burning flesh.

What’s wrong?” It was Mariko’s voice again. Nothing was wrong with her and Ryu was left confused.

“What?” It was a rare thing but the shock was clear in Ryu’s voice, and he was also very relieved. “Oh, nothing… just seeing things.”

The jounin then lowered his arm and after some hesitation followed the guide's path once again.

Words started to echo in the mind of Sosu as there seemed to be whispers all around him. If it wasnt from one direction, it was from the other. There was no sense of where they were and despite a few trees, the valley seemed barren except for their own presence. What made Sosu worried even more so was the fact that the voices sounded familiar. Within the miasma was a familiar figure that kept darting in and out of vision. Renchinshin Hitoko, however, he was not alone; Sosu could also see his father. The man that had raised him to be the type of shinobi he was now.

”Dad?” Sosu spoke to himself as he started to walk towards the figure looming at the edge of the path. It was almost hypnotic the way it pulled Sosu towards the edge of the path. However, in a single moment before the outreaching hand of his father grabbed Sosu’s another hand pulled him back.

”Do not, I repeat do not go off the path.” Mariko stated as a weird hand crept back into the mist. Its fingers were long and its nails sharp.

Within a moment Ryu had pounced on the woman guide and without any real reason at all. As the two of them continued to bicker to one another Sosu was truly starting to realize what was happening.

”Ryu, did you just see something that wasn’t there?” Sosu stated to the leaf shinobi.

”Mariko, this miasma, how do we stop it from infecting our mind like this?” Sosu stated over towards their guide. He had just hoped that they would be able to get out of the situation to the best of their ability. It would be too bad if the champions of destiny were defeated by some kind of fog.

Sosu asked Ryu a very uncomfortable question. He wanted to know if Ryu was duped and had his senses messed with. The jounin was perfectly capable of admitting such things to himself, but when it came to his teammates it was a difficult task for him to show any weakness. The jounin was trained to lead and so he was always supposed to show a strong front, but on the other hand he was also supposed to be forthcoming about what was going around to his teammates so that they could all be on the same page.

It was a good thing that the jinchuuriki always carefully picked his words so that they would convey the message that he wanted. He wasn’t the type to react rashly so his responses were normally calm and measured.

I’ll be fine now.” He responded to the sand shinobi, indirectly admitting weakness while reassuring him that they are good to go.

A strong willpower and experience helps.” Mariko responded to Sosu. “As far as we can tell no one is fully immune to the illusions, but the effects on each person vary greatly. Some weak-hearted individuals suffer and give up altogether, while some of our elders-

Mariko then paused for a moment. She stopped talking and stood in her place as she lowered her head before walking forward once again. She must have had a minor encounter with an illusion and she even lost her train of through, but she continued to walk as confidently as before.

Oh as I was saying, there are some tells to figure out what is real and what isn’t. It doesn’t always work, but it can help sometimes.

Some illusions are imperfect. If you compare them to their counterparts you would notice some missing details. Keen observation is the key to spot that. Hamza pitched in, being a keen and experienced observer.

You mean something like shadowless bodies, rain out of a clear blue sky or illogical physics?

Exactly.
