Takeshi’s subordinate disappeared somewhere after the chuunin put the fear of death in him, but the big boss himself likely wouldn’t be so easy to bully. Takeshi once again rushed at Motonubu’s prone position and delivered a few swift, conservative swings with his sword. The chuunin rolled back and hopped back onto his feet just quick enough to keep himself out of range.

In hindsight it was dumb to go for the weakest men first. Motonubu could see it in how Takeshi moved and attacked, the man treated the chuunin as an actual threat. Eh, mistakes to ponder over later. He watched the professional soldier’s movements, trying to find an opening but coming up with nothing. Motonubu found himself quite literally backed up against a wall.

Takeshi let out a triumphant shout and swung in a wide, low arc. Dodging left or right would risk getting gutted from the side, and the angle meant he couldn’t roll under it. Takeshi wanted this over right this instant. And, if Motonubu was nothing but an unarmed grunt, he would of gotten his wish.

Instead what he got was a mighty sandal embedded right in his hairy mug. As the swing came in Motonubu leapt up and planted both his feet on the side of the wall. Chakra pumped through his soles and he stuck fast as the sharp blade sliced into empty air. Then he pushed off the wall and planted a firm kick right into the nose of his attacker. A gut-churning and wet crunch came out from under his shoe. Strong man, weak man, tall or short, no amount of training could protect you from a broken nose.

With a howl of pain Takeshi pulled back and attempted to swing again. Motonubu pushed off his attacker’s head and landed behind him before the weapon could connect. The chuunin spun around and with an almost casual grace hooked Takeshi around the neck with one arm. Then he spiked him into the hard stone floor. Takeshi's sword fell away and clattered off somewhere in the distance.

“Kubo!”
Motonubu growled as he sunk his foot into Takeshi’s neck. “Boss! You dumb coward, calm down, we are winning!”

Fuuuuucccckkkk....

Somehow, Takeshi was in trouble. He had been too distracted disabling Kubo to see exactly what went down, but he had heard Takeshi cry out in pain, his loud shouts and vicious laughter suddenly replaced with a thud as he hit the ground. The man who had caused Takeshi’s battle partner to flee loomed over him, with a foot to his throat. Takeshi’s men seemed to realize what was going on, and moved to fight harder, while others yelled for Junichi to run. Only a few had realized that he was the one who knocked the guy with the axe out, but then again, they were also the ones having a more difficult time in their own fight.

In this situation, there was only one thing to do, you know, unless he really wanted to blow his cover. He didn’t doubt that the man trying to crush his gang leader’s throat was capable of outfighting him, but the real question was if he could out Ninjutsu him. He only needed a few more seconds until he could make use of the Hen’iki again, but those few seconds may very well have resulted in Takeshi dying.

He passed by a man laying unconscious with a club, taking note of the object, but he had decided on an entirely different recourse. Junichi was not strong; he couldn’t knock a man unconscious with pure strength. But he was resourceful, and he knew how the human body worked. A specialized strike could do way more damage than throwing a blunt instrument around without any know how – a fact many straight men failed to realize.

His ninja training lead to him running silently, but it was entirely possible for him to be caught in the man’s peripheral vision. Regardless, he raised his foot swiftly, aimed right in between Takeshi’s assailant’s legs.

His target was most definitely a pressure point.

Footsteps and cries and shouts drowned out any kind of useful auditory data. Even Motonubu was to blame as he craned his neck and continued to shout for Kubo, whose disappearance was worrying. What an unfit group of smugglers these lot were, leaving themselves so exposed and so helpless to the most basic of ambushes!

Then the feminine looking child Motonubu mistook for an easy mark snuck up on him and planted a firm but vigorous blow right to his groin.

Bloody hell.

Bloody HELL!

Agony shot up both sides of Motonubu as he at once fell forward. His hands stopped him from face planting but his legs wanted so desperately to buckle. It took an enormous amount of personal willpower to waddle away on all fours as fast as he did. Did he deserve this after being so smug about shattering Takeshi’s vulnerable nose? Yes.

Did that justify an unprofessional response? Absolutely not. The Sunagakure Academy never taught its young genin how to think clearly after getting a square kick in the old sandbags but Motonubu somehow perservered. Once again he found himself on the receiving end of a low-down, dishonest tactic. When would it be his turn to cheat?

As the throbbing pain paralyzed his legs he came to terms with his weak position. Takeshi’s remaining men (only three, if Takeshi stayed on the ground) would surely surround the biggest threat in the fight (him) and his body was in no position to respond. Living took precedence over completing the mission. Motonubu gave up at exactly that moment. His hands moved together in a flurry of hand seals.

“Look at that!”
In the chaos he still heard the cry come out instantly. “He’s a shinobi!”

Too little too late. Three more figures pulled themselves out from the nearby dirt and sand on the floor, all in the shape of the hunched over Motonubu. They were the color of Grass’s soil, rather than of Sunagakure’s sand, but they’d hopefully delay things long enough for the feeling to return to the more delicate parts of the chuunin.

It… worked?

It worked!

Helping Takeshi to his feet, Junichi let the man lean on his slight form, at least until he shoved himself away and propped himself up with an elbow against the wall. He held tightly to his sword, while his free hand swept over his face. Junichi heard the pop as he reset his own nose, earning another gush of blood that dripped down to the floor. Takeshi, to put it plainly, was a hard ass. One wired with too much adrenaline, given how he let that same hand drift into his pocket, producing several pills. Soldier pills, by the looks of them, and… Was that Druid’s Heart?

He took a deep breath. Seeing that one of Kubo’s men was a ninja, possibly a nukenin at that, earned a response from Takeshi’s remaining men that resulted in the, you guessed it, imbibing of the very drugs they were hoping to recreate. The effects, while they wouldn’t be instant, would definitely show up soon. Junichi just hoped that the doses his “allies” had taken weren’t too high: He didn’t want a repeat of what he had seen with Naro.

The three remaining goons of Takeshi moved to engage the clones while Junichi bit his lip. The presence of another ninja complicated things, particularly one that he didn’t recall seeing in the Bingo Book he’d reviewed before going on the mission.

“Of course Kubo would have employed a nukenin. Why wouldn’t he have?” His voice dripped with sarcasm, drawing a few throwing daggers and letting them loose at the other chuunin. Even still, the Shinshi did not want to let his allies know that he was a shinobi himself. If he blew his cover, his mission would be an automatic failure: He needed Takeshi to lead him to the ones who would be responsible for converting the Druid’s Heart into a finished product.

One by one his bunshin popped and shattered like cheap glass. Couldn’t be helped. He just needed more time. As blood began to flow again he felt his body loosen up. Now came an attack from four different sides- three from Takeshi’s approaching men, and one from the boy in the form of throwing daggers.

Motonubu clenched a fist and filled with chakra, enjoying the burning sensation as the air pressure built up within it. He released it in the next instant, forcing a massive gust of air to blow upwards, rather than outwards. What a kind child, giving me a weapon. The daggers, pushed by his Force Palm, shot upwards and clattered harmlessly onto the ceiling of the warehouse.

Logically his next targets should have been the three men. The boy’s kick wounded Motonubu’s pride, but he doubted the young kid actually posed any physical threat compared to the other thugs. It wouldn’t be very rational to prioritize a target just because they embarrassed you. How unseemly for a career shinobi to go after a brat like that kid just because of a cheap shot!

On the other hand Motonubu had already blown his cover and this mission was forfeit. Might as well get a little bit of personal satisfaction out of it so this wasn’t a complete waste of his time, right?

He caught the two throwing daggers as they fell from above and burst into a full-fledged stampede at the skinny, pale skinned boy. His speed easily put the other three men in the dust. Motonubu wasn’t much of a knife fighter, but his only real goal was to mutilate the child. Would he cut off an ear? Carve out an eye? Oh, maybe slice a big wide smile into that immaculate face? The chuunin hadn’t decided yet. He just knew he wanted to scar the boy- make him wish his death would be quick.

It was very, very unprofessional behavior coming from Motonubu. It also felt really, really good.

Wow, what a bitter betty. All over a little kick.

In truth, Junichi was afraid. The speed at which the chuunin moved came as a shock, and it wasn’t something that he could counter, at least physically. He could always use Takeshi as a meat shield, but he really needed to keep the man alive – even if he failed the initial scope of his mission, he could always bring the man back for interrogation. Sensing that his chemist was in danger, however, Takeshi stopped leaning on the wall, drawing his sword defensively. He staggered forward, capable of fighting, even if he was in no shape to.

Rather than risk his life, Junichi did the only thing that he could: He clapped. In an instant, the glowing lines of the Hen’iki formed around him just as his assailant stepped into range. He drew from the man’s weight and used it to aid in his defense: Situated between rows and rows of tall, ceiling high shelves, Junichi caused one to topple over. It (and all of its contents!) threatened to flatten not only Motonubu, but Takeshi and anyone else who didn’t jump out of its way. So naturally, Junichi jumped a few fox trots away, making sure to stay within the confines of his Hen’iki. Anchoring was a pain, but he could make use of the entire circle now, so it wasn’t too bad!

With a barrier between him and what he thought was a nukenin, Junichi prepared himself not only for a follow up attack, but also for his little gang to turn on him. He could already hear their chatter.

“The kid’s a shinobi!”

“I knew this was a bad idea!”

“Who the fuck can control stuff with their mind!?”

He shot a meek grin toward Takeshi, who by this point, had eyes there were beginning to grow green. Thorns were beginning to traipse down his arms and encircle around his blade.

“It’s, uh, way more complicated than you think. You guys like math and science?”

How unexpected! No, actually. Anyone could have seen this coming. Missing-nin of all types wiggled between Grass and Sand, dipping in and out of the countries when the pressure on them grew. Motonubu should have known better.

Well, bugger to that! He wasn’t sure how or why the shelf suddenly fell, or why he suddenly was weightless, but it didn't take a genius to understand how to get away from a falling shelf. The chuunin twisted his body and grabbed onto the opposite shelf, pulling himself away just at the last possible moment. An enormous clattering shook the warehouse as the crates smashed into the floor.

As Motonubu pulled away he felt his weight suddenly return, and he landed awkwardly on his knees as it did so. The three remaining men of Takeshi took this opportunity to make a stab at the chuunin while his back was turned. Then, as if struck down by an invisible force, they all collapsed into a screaming mess.

He wouldn’t say it, right? That’d be so unprofessional. Looks like you boys should watch where you step. Okay, whew. He only thought it. Motonubu still gave a twisted smirk as the men dragged themselves away from him. Where his bunshin had fallen moments ago into piles of sand he'd embedded a multitude of makibishi. The men just bumbled right across the sand thinking it harmless. Stepping on spikes was hardly lethal, but it was painful and debilitating. It would take them a few minutes before they could pull the barbs out of the soles of their sandals, anyway. More than enough time to deal with the runt shinobi.

It did concern him how easily the child had removed his weight and tossed the shelves aside...but the chuunin reasoned if the boy could have killed him easily, it would have already happened. I must be twice his age, I have the experience advantage!

Another surge of chakra pumped into his hands, this time swirling around the knives he held. Barely a technique worth mentioning really, but the extra couple of invisible inches on the weapons might make a difference. He leapt up from his position and darted across the fallen crates and shelves, once again attempting a very straight forward attack on Takeshi’s skinny child.

“Wait, I can explain!”

Too late. Now Junichi not only had to deal with the crazy nukenin, but also Takeshi and his little squad of militia. What were the odds that they’d all gang up on him? Pretty high. At least the Sand traitor had dealt with three of them, temporarily anyway. Junichi truly had been trying to avoid any bloodshed, on his end anyway, but at this point, could it really be helped?

Takeshi rushed toward him in the same instant that the Sand ninja did, leaving the boy to let out a loud sigh. He figured that most people would see the glowing green light of the Hen’iki and realize that once they entered its range, they were essentially his. Alpha over the territory he had claimed, the boy rotated, causing the Hen’iki’s outer circle to do the same. The result was Takeshi coming from left flank, and whoever the Sand taijutsu user was head on.

A sword and a kunai – would they be a match for the weight of the fallen crates, all of their contents, and the shelf that they had been sitting on? Probably not.

He decided to deal with the more dangerous of the two first: The nukenin. Gathering the weight from the fallen items, he compiled it into one force, launching it in his direction. The attack itself was capable of flinging him out of the Hen’iki’s range, back toward the group of recovering gang members that didn’t exactly look too happy over having to pick makibishi out of their feet. That left Takeshi to deal with, who just stopped in the middle of his sword swing. He hit the ground face first, his nose making another sickening crunch sound.

In order to keep Takeshi from escaping, he put his foot on the man’s throat in a similar manner that the nukenin had done earlier, though he was only hoping to restrict the man's airflow enough to render him unconscious. Capable of assimilating weight, Junichi drew all of Takeshi’s into himself, increasing his own weight and making it rather difficult for the weightless man to get back to his feet. He reached down and picked up the thorny sword for good measure.

“Well, mission failed, I guess. I gotta keep you alive though, that way I’ll have at least something to show the Kusakage.”

Once again Motonubu found himself repelled by an irresistible force- one that seemed to rob him of his weight then force it against him. He didn’t have much trouble reorienting himself while ‘falling’, this time landing on his feet rather than his knees when his gravity returned to him. What a strange technique! But, he wagered he could just use wall walking to stick to the floor for his next assault. The boy’s pushes felt weak enough to resist. In the end, that boy really was nothing more than a speedbump.

The exact reason for this became clear seconds later when the child muttered something incredibly damning. The Kusakage? A Grass nin? Motonubu didn’t hear every word but he heard enough. Could it have been this whole thing was just one big misunderstanding?

His voice boomed out as if from the ceiling as he used a simple voice manipulation jutsu to make sure he was heard. “By the order of the Juudaime Kazekage, cease this violence!” None of those things were really true, but Motonubu liked saying them nonetheless. “I am Sawamatsu no Motonubu, a SUNA division Soldier. Continued resistance to the will of Kaze no Kuni will result in immediate and severe punishment.” They weren't even in Sand so why anyone would care was a mystery. That seemed like a trivial detail he could lie about later on the mission report though.

“Sunagakure will not be responsible for the injuries or deaths of any other operatives should they fail to identify themselves.” He growled the last statement at the boy, but grumbled one additional thing under his breath. “Though Kusagakure deserves what they get for having their soldiers fight like women.”

“You really want me to chop your dick off, don’t you?”

Junichi’s gaze narrowed as Takeshi stopped squirming. At least that was one out of the four downed, two technically, if what the Sand shinobi said was true. He didn’t necessarily mind being called a woman, but the condescending tone earned a subtle burst of rage – all he could picture was Gemmei bashing his head in with her shield and yelling aggressively. He imagined that she would lose control of the situation and then try and talk her way out of it, but then again, she wasn’t here. Forced to go on a honeymoon in River Country. How disconcerting.

“Either way, you should probably know that I am a Kusanin, and that while we might close to the end of your big ass desert, this area is under Kusa no Kuni’s control. Talk whatever big game you want, but you’ve just prevented an operative from completing his mission on our own soil. A whole week and a half, wasted!” He let out an indignant ‘harrumph’ before continuing. “Fukumen will not be pleased, and I highly doubt that your Juudaime will appreciate you causing a diplomatic dispute.”

Sass flowing from every pore in his body, Junichi stepped off Takeshi’s neck and traipsed through the messy warehouse. He’d blame it on collateral damage, yes sir. No gray bands were going on his ass today. He came to a stop near the edge of his territory, folding his arms indignantly and staring up at the towering, burnt creature that he’d previously crippled with a swift kick to the groin.

“Sawamatsu no Motonubu, stand down, and help me secure my target. I require your coopera– where are your friends?!” His pitch rose and fell like a bird of prey flying through the sky, a sudden screech overtaking him. In the time that Motonubu and Junichi had fought one another, an entire group had fled. “You let Kubo get away?! What do they even teach you at that blasted academy of yours? Or were you guys too busy huffing poison fumes and letting your children die to learn anything?” He’d heard of the incident not too long ago: Word of mouth traveled fast, particularly when all of the Kage attended a Summit.
