Ten kind of knew where she was going. All she really remembered was that Sector Two was where the church met and that it was in an abandoned factory of sorts. Ten was not paying attention as much as she should have and in hindsight, wish she had. There was now a sense of responsibility upon her shoulders and she felt like there might be some disappointment. However, she would fake it till she made it, or fake it till they got lost and died of starvation in the sewers. Either way, she knew the way to the general area. The sewers winded and twisted, the poor and the weak filling the metal cylinders as much as the water itself.

The thoughts and memories of what she saw in the church made her hesitant but she knew that behind her was a strong Jounin, a capable one that she had fought along multiple times with. Her cousin was no pushover she knew that. Slowly but surely the memory of the adventure she completed with Renko was becoming clear and she was almost positive she was near her destination.

She remembered the outcrop of homeless, the weird smell and the taste in the air. She remembered and then they were there. It was as if they just magically arrived and Ten had a weird feeling of being watched. Kazu would have no idea that Ten almost instinctively found their destination and Ten would not show any signs of confusing distress.

”This is it, I think this is the place where the cult had grouped up.” Ten stated as she pointed to the large building in front of the two Maeda.

It seemed empty at this point and it was possible that none of the cultist were left but she couldn’t be sure. She pressed forward and opened the large metal door.

The walk there didn’t bother him too much; where Ten had taken him was an offshoot of one of the main canals, one that was surprisingly close to known CCC territory. He made a mental note to check for any connection: The last thing he needed was the gang trying to involve the Maeda in anymore of their ploys. Usagi had already fallen victim to them, being kidnapped and forced to use her unique strain as a strange kind of drug. He had since learned to mimic it – it was rather effective at calming down angry civilians.

“You think?” He pushed past her, into the makeshift place of worship. It was dark, with a kind of musk that could only be generated by a sewer and dried blood. His nose turned up as he walked in, canting his head from left to right. From what little he could see in the darkness, he wasn’t impressed.

He traipsed between a few rows of pews before pausing, crossing his arms and looking back toward Ten. He hadn’t questioned her motives about bringing him here, but he could feel distrust brewing. Like her, he could feel various eyes boring into him, even sense their presences nearby. But he didn’t let onto it; rather, he sat at one of the pews, running a hand across their wood frame, as if to search for some kind of text.

“…Why did you want to come here again?” His voice was level, despite their circumstances. If worse came to worst, the two of them were capable fighters. Part of him wanted to torch the entire place, burn it to the ground. It wasn’t so much that he was offput by the place as much as it was that he viewed it as an entire affront to his existence – an entire cult, devout to parasites controlled by his family.

”This is where I felt my mother. The priest that was leading the flock within here stated that he knew my mother, but I was not ready to see her. I want to find some sort of evidence that she is around here; maybe a map, a letter, a note, a picture. Anything that I can find related to her will help a lot.” Ten stated on tangent. She didn’t really look at Kazu but instead was continuing to look around the area for more clues.

Despite what had recently happened there felt like people were still within the building, as if they had nowhere else to go. The horror that she had experienced previously had put a bad taste in her mouth but she needed to know.

From what she remembered there was a whole underground system beneath the makeshift church and there was sure to be some sort of living quarters within the area. She knew that it would be a bad idea to separate and that’s something she did not want to do. Kazu was a strong Maeda, and despite nearly dying only a few times within the building they were currently in, she felt safe with the cousin.

”I remember some sub level basement that connected to some of the other sewers. There was something that I fought down there so I didn’t have any time to investigate but I remember rooms, a lot of rooms.” Ten stated as she continued on her way.

The shadows seemed to move around the two Maeda, but they were harmless. Husks of flesh just to be fed upon by the karamushi.

Opening the door the sound echoed through the chambers of the basement. However, something called back from the darkness, its groans slightly louder then the doors. Ten began to descend into the darkness, unaware of what would be waiting for her.

Kazuhiko shot Ten a look, gripping onto the pew in front of him. He felt for her, but clinging to the notion that she might find a random piece of paper in a commune was farfetched at best. It was something that required extensive investigation or a skilled tracker, something the Maeda only had light experience with. Kazuhiko was first and foremost an assassin, one usually tasked with deep cover missions or raids – while it wasn’t impossible for him to be of use in finding his cousin’s mother, if she was actually still alive, it wouldn’t be easy.

He sifted through the book, rolling his eyes at the notion of there being a mythological origin behind the karamushi. There was talk of a leviathan for a few pages at least, and after a flipping to the very end, he rolled his eyes and returned to book to its holster on the pew. Despite Ten’s reservations, she seemed rather adventurous, something Kazuhiko didn’t doubt was attributed to the increased manpower.

So he stood, following after her, a breastplate forming underneath his clothing while chitin simultaneously secreted underneath his right sleeve, forming a gauntlet. Nothing good ever came from being unprepared, something that became increasingly clear as his ears twitched. Something just below them didn’t sound human, and yet, Ten marched, unabashed, fearlessly, as if she lacked any kind of fear or caution.

His eyes narrowed as he continued after her, allowing her to step through the chamber. He waited at the foot of the stairs, at the entrance. If the chuunin wanted to be fodder, that was on her.

Women.

Just beyond them, the awkward shuffling of limbs dragging echoed through the spacious chambers. The occasional screech, the sound of chitin clinking against the ground, it all made Kazuhiko nauseous. He heard a final screech, and then what sounded like a spider’s hiss as something skittered through the darkness, straight for Ten.

No sooner after Ten laid her foot on the bottom of the steps did a humongous blob of muscle, worms, and mucus come rushing towards the Maeda. It was almost surreal to the woman as she watched the charred mass of meat fling its large appendage to the mid section of her body. Reacting to the move Ten had already formed chitin among her rib cage but it was not fully completed by the time the mass landed a direct hit which flung her across the hallway into a door that in turn collapsed and sent a rolling Ten to the other side of the personal room.

Though there were a minimal amount of lights, Ten was able to depict what she was witnessing. The room had many photos of her, some were of her sleeping, some of her training, some of her on missions, and one was when she arrived in the church with Renko. It was as if the covenant was following the girl and it was almost weird to think that she had never noticed. However, it seemed like the room was uninhabited and there was no time to really check as the hulking beast started down the hall.

With each step of its trunk like legs the lights swung back and forth illuminating and then dimming the masses features. Ten was certain that she had killed the beast, but it seemed like there was no such luck. She could only hope that her cousin would help. Either way, she had to prepare her self and as the beast continued to beeline towards her she grew a gauntlet in the form of two long razor blades. She would have to cut this beast down to size with or without Kazu by her side. She just hoped it was the earlier option.

The creature reared back, letting out another hiss. It was human like in structure, but nothing about it seemed solid. Whatever was underneath it was a mere skeleton: Nests grew across the creature’s back, spouting out black clouds of karamushi eggs in a kind of haze while globular, chitin plate set underneath the odd, squishy appearance of the wretch. The flesh of the creature looked more like karamushi wired overtop one another, forming a kind of mesh that writhed across the layer of protection underneath them. From what Kazuhiko could tell, they were serving as a kind of network to propel the creature – whoever the monster once was, was gone. All that existed in front of them now was a husk serving the whims of the karamushi that controlled it.

As Ten readied herself, so too did Kazuhiko. Globular armor of his own coated his arms and two distinct adaptations formed atop the gauntlets, serving as daggers. The vespid adaptations linked to his blood stream, assimilating a large amount of larvae of his own strain.

He grimaced as Ten was knocked back – he watched her bounce like a skipping stone across the hall, the lowly lit room doing little to aid him in seeing where she landed. He could, however see what looked to be pictures of Ten. It was enough to cause him to quirk a brow, but not enough to distract him from the task at hand. The creature that had just attacked Ten turned to him, letting out another hiss as chitin began raising up its back, forming a tail that resembled that of a scorpion. It lashed out, and Kazuhiko did the same, parrying the tail in order to avoid its stinger. His hand wrapped around the obstruction and twisted, coiling the length around his forearm, and then, he spun, picking the creature off the ground and letting it fly into a nearby wall.

The stun, he hoped, would leaving an opening for his second attack. The reason Maeda were so dangerous in numbers is because, in regards to their ninjutsu, they could manipulate another’s strain. Sure, it wouldn’t work on a recognized Maeda – they could counteract the chemical signals, after all – but this wasn’t a Maeda. A husk, at best. His hands wove through seals, and the creature let out a hiss as the karamushi were forced to respond to him.

Dire worms began to form, the karamushi forced to sprout into sixteen shapes. They were still small, but given time, Kazuhiko was convinced that he could manipulate them effectively, to at least give the creature pause before it attacked his cousin again.

It seemed like Ten would have a reprieve from the fighting as her teammate came into the fold. She knew that the jounin was strong but there seemed to be something different this time. There seemed to be a strength that Ten would not be able to comprehend anytime soon. Either way, Ten was ready and she rushed to where the creature banged into the wall. Ten hated the idea that she was the weakest of the fold and she wanted to prove herself whether it killed her or not. She just hoped it didn’t actually kill her.

Rushing towards the landing point of the beast Ten was able to get within distance to mince her opponent. The blades of the chitin armor ripped through a lot of the fleshy mess but it didn’t seem to phase the monster as it whipped its arm around again. This time it would hit Ten again, only it was a little weaker then before. Able to withstand the attack Ten continued her attack till the construct threw a blade like appendage that pierced the chitin of her armor. The blood started to spew as it wept out of the chitin armor of her abdomen.

The force of the attack was able to throw her a few feet and it landed her right where Kazu was.

”Kazu, can you finish this? I think I am hurt from that attack” Ten hesitantly stated as she grabbed her abdomen. The blood was coming out but it wasn’t spewing out. There was no rush to finish the fight but Ten would no doubt like to leave as soon as possible. It was also interesting considering the pictures and room that she discovered. There was no doubt in the mind of Ten that there was a clue to where her mother was.

He grunted in response as chitin burst out of his chest, causing his jacket to stretch and contort with the appearance of the globules. Ten’s desire to attack the creature head on was amicable, if not stupid: A defensive strategy in this situation would have been their best offense, particularly against something that they could exert control over. Within a few seconds, his dire worms finished their creation, letting out a hiss as they spat their own caustic blood over the creature, wrapping around limbs and burying through the amalgam of flesh and parasite. They ripped through it, headed straight towards the ground in order to bury themselves into the earthen floor.

The monster roared in response, ripping its own flesh as it tried to tear itself from the ground, but Kazuhiko moved faster. With careful precision, he shot his adaptation through the creature’s skull, letting it pierce through the other side before leaping above it, eyes fixated on the target’s back. Despite being covered in chitin, the armor on its back was susceptible to penetration, evident by the similar globules that Kazuhiko bore on his chest armor. He fired a second adaptation from his chest, skewering the creature to the ground.

The head shot had killed the host, and the second shot was to keep the creature pinned to the ground. With no chakra to feed from, the karamushi would die within a few minutes, which just left him and Ten to deal with the creature’s reflexes. He flipped mid-jump and landed neatly several feet from the creature, sure to duck under one of its flailing tails.

He took a gander of the room again, not sure whether to be touched or disgusted by the shrine built for his cousin. None of it made any sense to him, but he knew better than to question it. This was her journey – he was just there to help her out. Still, it was a shame: His original intention had been to help clear her head, but judging by their surroundings, he had done more harm than good.

“We should probably get out of here in case it has friends.”

Ten agreed with his cousin as he felt like there was a lot of stuff going on that he couldn’t understand if surely Ten could not understand. She had been here twice already, and still she had no idea what to make of it. She didn’t see this part of the facility as much as she would like but Kazu was right; if there were more monsters they might die.

Ten felt safe in the care of her cousin, but she knew that even a strong Jounin had their limits and despite this not being their hardest fight, it could surely turn fatal for Ten if she was not careful. She had already suffered an injury and another one might put her out of commission. Plus, now there were all these karamushi that ran amuck in the area.

”Let’s kill these karamushi so they don’t spread anymore. I am almost certain that they would not infect anyone that isn’t already infected but it is better to be safe then sorry. Plus, let me take some of these items. I need to figure this out.” Ten stated before she headed out of the area. She climbed the stairs and for one last moment looked down into the cellar. There was something she was missing but she would have to come another time. Ten just hoped that she would solve this mystery soon.

Kazuhiko quirked a brow, eyeballing his cousin. “You’re free to do whatever you want, but surely you realize that without a host to support them, the karamushi die when left exposed longer than a few minutes.” Still, he shrugged as he disappeared for a moment, retracing his steps up the stairs. When he returned, he held a scroll in his hand – the perks of a cultist shrine, he supposed. He stretched the scroll out in front of the corpse and ran through a series of hand seals, sealing the creature inside the paper with a rather large puff of smoke.

He placed the scroll inside his pocket, shrugging a bit and letting the chitin armor he wore underneath his clothing crack and pop. Kazuhiko didn’t intend to stay longer than he needed to; Ten had a lot to process, and dealing with an emotional teenage girl wasn’t on his chore list for today. Between Ten and Usagi, Kazuhiko was beginning to realize that his superiors were getting comfortable having him tend to females a few years his junior.

Apt to leave (and banish the thought of having to spend the rest of his days with adolescent women,) he turned toward Ten and gave her another once over. “Maybe you should see a medical professional, and then come back. You said you’re hurt.” He shrugged. “I won’t stop you, though. Spend as much time as you need here; I’m going to go ahead and head back. Start drafting a report or something. The Major is going to want to see this.” He removed the scroll from his pocket and shook it for emphasis before replacing it and pivoting on one fit, moving back towards the staircase. When he got to the first step, he paused, turning to look back at his cousin before continuing his way up the staircase.

“Be careful.”
