Shipori kept one hand clenched in place on the dial of the vault, through no specific choice of his own, and slowly creaked his head enough to one side that he got an eye on Moko, the woman, and her sickly looking dogs. He lacked the fine motor control to glare exactly, but his pupil narrowed down. His seal burned hot on his chest. Though the Chuku witch had not completely debilitated him, yet, unseen force gnawed at his edges and danced knives along his itching skin where his seal unfurled into full display. Skittering black lines crept up his neck as Shipori grit his teeth.

Stay out of my way, little girl.

The back of Shipori's robe billowed out around a writhing lump. A quartet of cloth bandages came streaking out from the confines of his yukata in a twisting column towards Moko and the woman. As the hounds leaped forward to intervene, ribbons split of to knock the dogs away. The ribbons curved, then bent at hard angles to bring stiff edges down on the chain near Moko's neck. With a heavy clang, the ribbons formed a makeshift jaw that snapped through metal, and the iron ball about Moko's neck tumbled away.

Shipori's fingers twitched.

Ho? Surpri-

The Chuku woman reached out with one hand and grabbed a fistful of bandage, which went limp as her touch stifled Shipori's chakra flow. Shipori himself spasmed as if shocked and stumbled forward against the door. Black and purple arcs of electricity jumped all over him – out of him, his own system put out of control. The woman yanked back and Shipori came sailing towards her, a fish flailing on the line. Her dogs recovered and came barking and snapping back at Moko while Shipori hit the ground in a heap.

You're not as interesting as you think.

If only he had a chance to figure out how the new power he discovered worked. If only these Chuku weirdos had some other weakness. Instead, he was left being choked out, and he already knew that Shipori was crippled when fighting against their power to disrupt and control chakra.

It was getting hard to breath, and he could feel the snarls from the eyeless beasts. He was pinned to the ground, the Chuku so close to him that he expected the death blow any moment.

Then there was a metallic snap, and the pressure released. Moko took in a deep breath, and peeked up to see one of Shipori's bandages before the Chuku snatched it up. She had him, and that close, she thought she had them good.

Still, there was one type of attack that so far Moko hadn't seen the Chuku defend against effectively.

"Kusanagi Tsumazuku!" Moko yelled as he twisted from his down position, his legs spinning around him and catching both dogs before he managed to recover to a kneeling position.

As the hounds recovered and came to bite him, Moko released the hidden blade at his wrist and slashed up at the arm holding Shipori.

The slash cut across the woman's wrist, and she released the bandage with a scream of pain and a leap back from the fight.

"You insects!" She shouted, "Absolute wastes of flesh."

Moko didn't have time to gloat. He was thankful for the armor on his forearms as the too-sharp teeth of the hounds bit into his suit. He blocked his face, but they were stronger than they had any right to be.

Shipori propped himself up on his elbow, looking small and miserable. Somewhere above him, Moko struggled with the dogs and the Chuku woman swung her kama and chain. Shipori touched two fingers to his forehead and brought them back in front of his eyes. Blood smeared over the pads, soaked into the prints. His blood, which he had only seen rarely, he admitted, but something was wrong. What should have been a crisp fresh red, recently touched by air, was instead dull and dark, closer to purple.

H...o...?

One of the dogs came down at him and snapping teeth whipped Shipori out of his reverie. The bandages moved, but the hound was too close too quickly, and instead Shipori reached out to hold either of its drooling jaws in his little hands. He struggled – the beast stronger than he could hope to be – and the jolts of electricity started from his shoulders and traveled down his shoulders. His blood boiled and churned, and on instinct, Shipori let his chakra reach out and make contact with the hound.

A heartbeat.

And the dog twisted up like a spring, flesh and muscle bending in ways they shouldn't, bones turned to jelly. It swelled in spots, like cysts growing full under its skin. The creature's strength vanished, but Shipori had no time to pull away before it burst in front of his eyes. Black ichor splattered over the floor and across Shipori himself, and then there was nothing left of the beast except a mess. No organs, no bones, no hint of life beyond bile.

You- How did you-"

"No, you did this, didn't you? You and your compatriot, you broke something." Shipori look at his hands, coated in filth. "Moko, kill the other one. I want to see if the Chuku can be unmade, too."

The dog beast seemed to react less to its brother exploding, and more to the surprise of the Chuku woman. Which meant that it was shocked at the same time Moko was. It wasn't every day that something inflated into a meat balloon and splattered over the room, and Moko hadn't exactly seen that kind of technique out of Shipori before.

"Sure," Moko said, hesitation in his voice, "You got it."

The freakish beast wasn't ready to go down without a fight though, and it snarled and snapped at Moko. Somehow, he got the feeling it was keeping an unseen eye on Shipori. It was afraid, which was an advantage that they didn't have before.

Moko charged forward while he had the chance. The dog moved into the blow, jaws open, and while Moko landed a strong knee into the ribs of the monster-dog, he found himself with a whole dog around his hand.

"Damnit, let go of me ya' filthy hellspawn or I'll..."

He could feel the teeth biting down into his flesh, going even through his arm guards. Moko put his hands on the beast's muzzle and tried to yank it free, even giving another knee to its body to see if it would loosen up.

Then there was a sick yelp, and a schlerp noise. First the dog's bite got stronger, before going loose. Moko didn't understand what happened at first, until he saw his wrist blade sticking out of the top of the creature's skull.

"Well hell," Moko said as he pulled the beast off. It fell to the floor with a thump. Even though he won, his arm felt like hell from the forearm out, and his hand went limp.

Shipori gave his order, but took a quick hop backwards as the Chuku woman swung wide his direction. The next swipe of her kama, Shipori lifted a hand and the bandages pouring out of his sleeves followed. They wrapped together into rough approximation of a blade and met the curved steel with a hard clank. The woman's dark eyes went wild – Shipori's skin prickled as static filled the air. She brought empty length of chain down on one side and came in with the kama on the other while Shipori made careful, shuffling steps to keep either end off him.

You should be dead.

Yes, you'll find I'm quite persistent.

Shipori flexed his fingers and pulsed chakra to the tips; the flow felt sluggish. Distorted. Repeated contact with the Chuku and they're half-lifed chakra had certainly done something to his system, as delicate as he was. The ribbons took little focus and even less energy, but if he wanted to do more than hold out, he had to strike before the woman had a chance to disrupt whatever technique he tried to mold. An idea came to the forefront.

And just in time, as the woman hooked the kama behind the ribbons and took a sudden, sliding step that brought her well within Shipori's guard. She glowered down at him as the free end of the chain fell away and a simple, blackened tanto dropped into her empty hand. The sheath clattered across the floor. Shipori's seal burned white hot with jagged lines drawing all across his face.

Then we'll try again.

The knife came down, Shipori pushed his hand forward with fingers spread. Black wisps of smoke curled around each digit.

Fuuja Houin!” An unconventional attack for an unconventional opponent. The woman's aim faltered as she screamed – Shipori gritted his teeth as the knife dug into his shoulder. “Now is the time!

The woman's scream echoed in the room, and as Moko recovered he watched as Shipori's terrible power went to work. She fell back from his touch, her mouth agape. It was like her very essence was trying to escape from where Shipori had struck her chest. Black marks were there, like her clothing was worn away at the point of contact.

Her skin was losing color, going gray and being sucked dry like a rotting apple. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head, her teeth sticking out beneath teeth pulled back over her gums. Black smoke was leaving her mouth in wisps not too different from whatever came off of Shipori's hand.

"Small gods and big! Ya' turned her into a raisin." Moko said as he held his arm and took a step toward the destroyed Chuku woman, "Whateva' that was, promise ta' never use it on me."

He looked toward the door down to the room, and no one seemed to be coming. Then he looked back at the vault door, still closed. At least they would be able to get what they wanted now, no more obstructions. He was getting tired of fighting ancient evil. At least, he assumed they were evil.

Moko leaned in a little closer to the awkwardly posed woman, and a small puft of breath came out of her mouth. His eyes widened and he almost fell back. She was still alive?

"No rush, all considering, but if ya' can crack that door so we can get scarce, that'd be great."

Not that he didn't respect that Shipori just had a sword in him. He just didn't want to find out exactly what else this woman could do if she truly was still alive.

On her forehead, he could see what seemed like a symbol, indented in her desiccated flesh. He could swear it was familiar.

"I'll watch this one, in case she comes round for a second go."

Shipori sagged on his feet and brought a hand up to touch his shoulder – his fingers came back bright red. With the woman starting to fall apart in front of him, he flicked a bandage up over his shoulder and set it to wrap tightly about the wound. Blood started to soak through the cloth, but it would hold for now. His nerves burned and his skin crawled, his chakra boiled in his coils. Shipori looked down at the woman where she had fallen, still shrieking as she grew desiccated.

Whatever he had done to the Chuku, he knew it wasn't what he meant to do. This was an accident.

His gamble had been that the Chuku half-chakra might function like a seal and he could block it or at least delay it. This was something else again. Not that he could ever, would ever admit as much to Moko. With the boy from River standing guard, Shipori shuffled off back to the door to the vault. His seal continued to flare up with black lines crossed all over his face. Above them, he heard movement. The sounds of their fight had drawn attention.

Speed, then.

Shipori reached the door and flashed through seals. He held his palm an inch from the vault door's dial and felt his coils scream in response, but air swirled into the mechanism. “Rasengan.” One simple command and the vault door wrenched and twisted about a ball of dark, sickly looking chakra. Shipori tore the metal apart and sent it flying backwards into the vault as a knotted mess. The hole he made was small, but so was he, and he ducked through it into the vault proper.

More boxes and crates arranged under shelves, carefully wrapped and stored artifacts treated like the proper treasures they were. Shipori needed a moment to sort through the junk.

The guards.

Guards, late but still there. That was okay. If Shipori was working on finishing everything up, then he could at least do that much. His neck was bleeding a little, and his left arm was still useless for the moment. It was possible, in an emergency, that he could pull off seals. For the moment, he wanted to avoid even trying.

"Right," Moko said, "I've gottem, have fun in there."

Moko watched the door to the basement, listened as the footsteps of the guards hustled down. There were a few of them. Not enough to cause a problem if they were at full strength, but the Chuku made sure they were weakened enough that he questioned his own capabilities. He winced as he pulled his injured arm into a better position to move.

The guards were just poor men. They wore nothing much more than a little leather over their chests, their uniforms made to produce false authority when idiots came to mess up the museum. They were not ready to fight a shinobi, and maybe that was exactly what was expected. After all, it would be a shame if the people guarding the museum could pose a problem to those hiding priceless artifacts in the basement. Moko didn't have all the details, and decided it wasn't all the important.

There were only three of them, and they brandished clubs at Moko. Then he saw it, the moment they saw the terrifying body of the Chuku, as well as the gore of the two dogs. A moment of horror was all Moko needed to strike. He charged forward, his injured arm lagging behind. He leaped in, flipping forward and bringing his heel down hard on the first guard's skull.

"Kusa no Mokuzai!" He shouted as the first guard was conked out. He landed, recovered, and brought his other heel up to strike the second in the chin.

Moko stood up and tried to balance himself. The last guard was coming in hot despite himself, and there was no reason to think he was going to lose his nerve just because his two friends were laid out on the floor of the basement.

The guard brought his club overhead, Moko dodged once, a second time in the opposite direction, then grabbed the last swing out of the air before headbutting the guard hard.

Moko took a dazed step back as the guard fell, "Kusa no... Kusa no Boshi? Good enough."

Hopefully Shipori would be done soon. Moko looked back at the Chuku body. The woman was in the same position, though now it looked almost like she was falling away, into ash. Little piles were building up beneath her.

Shipori fumbled through the dark with one clean hand – he didn't want to smear his blood over the rest of the artifacts if he could avoid it. The vault contained a number of weapons, swords mostly, and a large assortment of jewelry. They were all damaged in one way or another, likely recovered from various ship wrecks and pirate coves. The first few bins of papers he opened, Shipori found only ledgers and logs. Outside, someone took a tumble and Shipori heard them collide with the ground. Hopefully, it wasn't Moko.

Ah, here we are.

At the back of the vault was a work table arranged with lamps and a small, stacking tool chest that sat closed. A heavy scroll sat in the center of the table, all closed up and tied with shut. Shipori checked the wooden dowel through the center and found the matching crest. More work than he expected, but not more than he was willing to expend, all in all. Thoughtless, he reached out for the scroll with one hand.

Shipori paused as he got a grip on the parchment. Etched into the surface of the table was a crescent moon, a swooping cut like a smile. He pulled the scroll close and a frozen chill went up his spine. Shipori turned on his heels and caught sight of it.

A slender silhouette, a hazy shadow, stood in the doorway of the vault, waiting for him, with one hand along the rough edge of metal. She tossed back her hair and stepped out of sight.

Frantic, Shipori tucked the scroll into his robe and hobbled at maximum speed through the vault to the hole he'd blown into into, but by the time he got there, she was gone. Instead, there was the Chuku, now dissolved, and Moko, along with three very unconscious guards. Shipori peered about the basement and made his way to the stairs in a hurry.

An illusion? A figment?

Time to leave this horrid place. I have what we came for.

Moko rubbed his forehead and wiped away the small bit of blood there. He was dazed, but when he looked back over to where Shipori was he could swear he saw something close to actual terror on his face. That wasn't a good sign, not a lot seemed to scare the little guy. Plus he was in quite a rush for someone that nearly got killed a few minutes earlier. Moko didn't question it, they could get out, and never look back at Barnacle again.

"Right, path should be clear 'nough. Come on!"

Moko ran for the stairs up, and stopped for one last look back to the Chuku woman. Her body was nearly gone now. That was a concern. He didn't know if that meant Shipori had won, or simply delayed her. That wasn't exactly a normal way of just dying. That just meant one more that he was going to have to hunt down when he got hold of... whatever it was they were learning to do. The power he 'stole' from that beast in the grove was strange, felt powerful, but it was also something the Chuku had already raided.

Did that mean he was going to get a similar power to theirs? If so, the thought of going that far, kind of scared him. Then again, if it was the only way to get strong enough to do what he had to do...

He ran up the stairs ahead of Shipori. The main floor of the museum was empty, an easy path. They had a straight shot back to the shore, and therefore freedom.

Then he heard an alarm go off, a klaxon call that sounded like it was coming from outside, and echoing over their little corner of the island.

"'Kay, 'kay, running then."

They made a break for it, and just wouldn't look back. Like Shipori said, they had what they came for.
