Default To Be [Served] Or Not to Be

He oddly felt naked. It was a silly feeling to have; especially seeing as how he was in fact wearing clothes. Shima very much doubted he would have been allowed into the ramen shop naked, and yet naked was exactly how he felt. Shima knew why he felt this way, it was just really, really embarrassing to admit it. He wanted to let out a sigh as he looked down only to be greeted by the yellow smiley face of his shirt. It felt wrong not having his thick, heavy jacket on. Still, it wouldn’t do him much good to draw attention to himself. That was why he had left it; along with his toolkit and headband in the room that he was currently sharing with Hyuug-, no with Yuu, not Hyuuga-san.

Shima helped himself to a seat in a corner away from the entrance as he waited to be served. It didn’t take long and he couldn’t help but notice how cute the server girl was. She couldn’t have been much older than him, fifteen? Sixteen tops. She giggled as she took his order, and he could feel his face flushing. How embarrassing. He really wished he had his jacket now so he could just bury his face in it and wait until either the embarrassment faded or he died; either one would have been great about now.

He took a breath, closed his eyes and just focused. He could feel his Kikai all around him as they watched and waited for a command. He opened his eyes as the cute server girl brought him the bowl. Shima gave the girl a small smile and watched as she giggled once more before walking away. The noodles smelled delicious.

They, Tsukinaka-sensei, Yuu, and he, were on day three of who knew how many of their mission. It was a basic investigation mission, but it felt odd. Shima wasn’t exactly sure what their target was suspected of doing but it must have been important. They had been sent out in such a rush that they had been forced to leave Shiori behind while she recovered from the previous mission, thankfully Yuu had been provided to them as an asset for this mission. Atsumi was a large city, but it hadn’t been hard to find their sullen target, and here h was keeping an eye on the target while he waited for his relief.

Yuu had an unfortunate habit of being a team filler, moving from one team to the next to temporarily replace injured or dead teammates. He had been told, repeatedly, that it was a good thing—his adaptability and strength made him ideal for the job—but it always felt like intruding into someone else’s home. He was always sticking in a spot that belong to someone that might very well be on their deathbed, and the odd sense of resentment never did seem to get easier. Konoha was his home, yet he always found places he didn’t belong.

However, next to Shima, he felt like regardless of the circumstances, he’d be butting into someone else’s place. He swore he heard the boy muttering to himself constantly, just out of even the range of his eerie ears, conversations about the mundane day to day. Yuu was barely incorporated into any of this, but he doubted anyone would be. The odd countenance of the Aburame humbled the boy, who always felt alien and removed from society. Here was a boy-turned-hive. Old, wicked ninja magic. Yuu just looked like a blind girl. He could live with that. His skin was crawling. Thinking about the Aburame...wasn’t a good option.

He ordered a tea from the girl, not noticing her apparent flirtation or beauty, eyes cast down towards the table. He folded some of his hair behind his ear, only noticing the feminine action after it was too late, and sighed. It was tough, but he felt all this grace and politeness that had been drilled into him gave people the wrong idea. He would try to be more assertive.

Especially considering “Pockets”--rather, Tsukinaka-sensei, had referred to Yuu as a girl consistently over the last three days, and he hadn’t had the guts to correct him yet. He had even tried deepening his voice, walking with a broader stance, and even making a show of adjusting his genitals in his robes. It was no use.

Yuu was too focused on his shota complex to even notice the man coming into the room.

This mission was going to be a lot easier, he could already feel it. After everything that had almost happened with Shima and Shiori, it felt good to have an easier assignment. Sure, he couldn't carry all of his usual equipment, instead he was down to a jacket tied around his waist, with a few scrolls in the pockets. He practically felt nude.

But for a mission this easy, he had Shima and Yuu's support. The young Hyuuga was a known asset, and Daisuke was sure he could count on her as well as last time. Shima was still recovering though, and Daisuke was trying to keep an eye on him. Easy mission didn't mean he wouldn't stay alert.

He walked into the ramen shop, giving the waitress the best wave he could muster while he was trying to stay incognito. Stealth wasn't his strong suite. Still, their target had stolen records, or so they were told. They needed to watch him, figure out where he was keeping them, and recover them for Leaf.

Daisuke went to sit, away from both Yuu and Shima. He didn't want it to seem like they were too chummy. If they could play it cool, eventually, this Naoki guy would break his routine and they would be able to see where he goes. Instead, they got to watch him fidget in place as he ate.

"Your menu," The waitress said as she came over.

"Ah, uhm... thanks." This was the second time over the three days he was in here eating, and he was sure it seemed weird. He wasn't from the area after all. "Soon I'll be a regular huh? Customer that is." He tried to laugh, but it came out a little weird. When he looked up, he realized the waitress was actually looking over in Shima's direction.

Maybe it was better she didn't notice him make a fool of himself.

He covered his face with the menu, and spoke into his comm unit, "Anything new?"

Naoki wasn't far from any of them, his legs bouncing up and down, practically slipping around on his seat. Why he came to sit down ramen places to eat was anyone's guess, but the man was paranoid. Even as he sipped at his noodles, his eyes darted around.

Shima did not like it when people could watch him eat. It was one of the reasons that he did not go out to eat with friends often, well that and the fact that he did not have any. He had a habit of hiding any chewing behind his hand, like it was a shield. He did not know where he picked up the habit but it was one that he had always had, at least his habit was going to help him.

“No, same routine as yesterday,” Shima said before swallowing. “It really is good.” No one could hear that last bit, well no human. Inside his body however his hive buzzed in contentment for him. Shima smiled, it almost felt like being tickled on the inside. The food was done, time to get back to work. Standing up he made his way to leave, his money on the counter along with small tip. He could afford to be generous, the money he was spending was not his. The funds the mission office gave to cover these missions was never that sizeable, but it certainly helped alleviate the burden on his own wallet. Now that Tsukinaka-sensei and Yuu were there he could move onto his next task.

Naoki apparently had some contacts with a privately owned shipping company. He was to send in his Kikai and see what they could turn up, if anything at all. Hands in his pockets Shima was just about to pass Tsukinaka when he felt his hive tense in alarm. He jumped a step back only to find the waitress looking at him with an odd look on her face as she griped her serving tray.

“H-hey, I can’t help but notice you’re a new face. Been in the city long?” The girl laughed and pushed some hair behind her ear, the gesture oddly familiar.

Crap. He could not have been made already could he? Think! Say something! Anything!

“Uhhh… maybe? I mean no!”

Great job. Knew you had it in you champ.

“That’s great!” The girl had a wide smile on her face as she looked him in the sunglasses. “Because, like, a couple of my friends were going to have a get together, and like, you should totally come you know?” The girl bent forward and was suddenly way into his personal space. She looked imploringly at him.

Shima had to fight not to turn his head and look at his Sensei for guidance. Once again he knew he had to say anything. His Kikai were buzzing in agitation, they apparently did not like the situation one bit. It had to be a trap, why would a cute girl ask him out alone? Well, he certainly knew better than to agree!

“Okay.”

Crap.

“Like, great! It’ll be tomorrow night, on the beach near Tama Street! Just follow the signs, you won’t miss it.” She backed off and turned to get back to serving. “Oh,” she said turning around once more. “My name is Yue, better not forget it!”

Shima nodded like an idiot before seeing himself out. He was definitely blushing now.

Yuu sighed, perhaps in the most predictably way possible.

"Shima-san, after she sees your bugs, she's going to be completely out." He covered his face with the sleeve of his robe, as if to mask his voice--but his eyes twinkled above the hemline.

The flirtations of women had become more and more common as he gained geninhood. It was an unfortunate side effect of the things that made up the Hyuuga's background--good genes, good money, good strength. Compared to someone like Kiyoko, though, the common rabble felt...like, cheap. Totally.

He twisted his neck back at the tavern--where they had left Naoki to his meal--and then looked back at the Aburame. "Target hasn't moved yet. We should check the lead with the courier before noon."

His smile became dangerous. "Besides, if you want to have time for your older woman, you'll need to be mission free."

There wasn't time for frivolity, though. Yuu made a few swift jumps to get to the rooftops, after he had slunk away from the public eye, and set himself to work. His eyes penetrated seemingly everything--revealing every corner and every hidden transaction that the town could hide. As long as it wasn't behind solid wood or anything, anyway. He felt a familiar itch in the back of his nose as he performed his surveillance, but it was too much data to parse easily. It'd be easier if he could lend his Byakugan to someone like Pockets, who spent a lifetime perfecting picking one thing out of a crowd.

No one that matched the shipping company's colors, though. However--

"Sensei! Yesterday, Naoki headed north to his training field. He's headed south, now."

His smile was gone, replaced by a flat expression. "Where Aburame-chan's girlfriend wants to party tomorrow."

Daisuke was at ground zero of situation Shima. Since the genin was just passing him when the waitress asked him out, he couldn't help but react. His eyes widened at the start of conversation, and he felt a bead of sweat develop when the boy hesitated. It was the most dangerous situation he had dealt with in days, and a true tragedy.

When it ended, Daisuke matched the boy's exasperation, and probably his blush. Tomorrow night? That was going to be complicated. It occurred to Daisuke that if they didn't get done in time, it would be necessary to tell Shima to sit the arrangement out. The boy would be heartbroken, he was sure.

Daisuke gripped his menu so tight that he left indents in the pages, they couldn't let it happen.

He looked back again, and saw that Naoki was moving. The genin knew their goals, and with Yuu on the roof the chance of them missing anything was slim. They could follow him to his destination, get what they needed, and be done in time for Shima to have his... get together.

Daisuke got up and prepared to leave. Another waitress called out to him, "Sir, were you going to order?"

He froze up, then turned to her, "Oh, uhm. I actually forgot, I ate already. Sorry."

There was no time for covers if they could get to the bottom of Naoki today. As he got outside, he heard Yuu's report. She said he was heading South? That would take him away from all of his usual stops. Maybe that meant he was actually going to mess up today.

Daisuke sped up, leaping to the nearest corner to look around and try to catch site of the moving target.

"Keep an eye on him, Yuu," He said, "Or, however that works."

Tailing the man was difficult, because he was so paranoid. Even as Daisuke passed around the corner walked the open path behind him, there were plenty of other people between them. But Naoki looked over his shoulders, snapped his fingers, looked both ways every few feet. When he checked behind himself, Daisuke looked away. He wanted to avoid even accidentally making eye contact.

When he looked back, Naoki was gone. Did he run again?

"He is running again!" Daisuke said. It wasn't the first time the man suddenly ran from phantom tails. Well, either that or he was actually really good at seeing his actual tails. It occurred to Daisuke that it was unfair to treat the man as somehow crazy when he actually was being followed.

"We can't lose him!"

Why would he be heading in the same direction as Shima's...rendezvous, tomorrow?

Shima walked through the streets of the port city, hands in pockets as he tried not to think about what just happened. How embarrassing. He had gotten flustered so fast, of course the girl had not known he was a ninja, that was just stupid. He wanted to slap a hand against his face. Hyuuga Yuu’s little snippy comments had not helped the matters. Did they really think he was going to try and go to the party? Obviously Yuu knew little to nothing about Shima, which was how Shima prefered it honestly. It had been a stream of little snipes in their time together, and frankly he was getting tired of it. He could feel his kikai buzz angrily. At least they had his back.

There were so many reasons as to why he wasn’t going to go to the party it would take a day just to list half of them! One, he did not know how to properly interact with people, especially civilians. Okay so maybe it was only one reason? But it was still a pretty good reason he thought.

‘Even if we met up and we hit it off, it wasn’t like anything could happen from it. Yuu was right,’ Shima thought as he took his hands out of his pockets to look them over. ‘Once she found out what I was, she’d run and screaming. No one wants to date a bugman.’ He could feel his Kikai over their link, they were silent. He prefered it that way this time. After all, what could they say?

The docks weren’t that far off from the little ramen stand that Naoki liked to visit. If Shima had to guess that was probably why the man frequented it so often. The docks were busy with a constant stream of traffic in and out, people, animals, objects, and other miscellaneous items that didn’t fit into either category made their way on and off of ships. He knew which one he was looking for, and sure enough there were enough people scrambling for work that they wouldn’t notice one more. Even if they did, what did it matter? He was probably some bum urchin looking for work.

The reason Shima was here was because out of the three he was the one not needed to track Naoki. Sensei had to be there incase something happened, and with a Hyuuga what need was there for an Aburame tracker? Not only did Yuu cut him down with words, but also with just his presence. Shima could still do something though, that was why he was here after all.

Now to just get onto the ship.

Old stone tiles barely shifted as the lithe young boy scurried from rooftop to rooftop. From his vantage point, it was easier to try and keep a focus on Naoki—despite his ability to see through virtually anything, it was much easier to maintain regular eye contact with a target...at least for a fledgling practitioner of the doujutsu. His father would be hot under the collar to know he was using regular sightlines, but his father wasn’t exactly here. Yuu bit his lip as he kept his eyes on the target, as best he can, occasionally adjusting Pockets’ or Shima’s courses by whispering into his communication unit.

The Hyuuga boy hesitated, however, and stood up high on his rooftop to make sure—a stark silhouette to the morning sun. His robes hang down around his body, making him look significantly larger than he was, which was either a dodging mechanic or hubris, but to the trained ninja eye, his actions were unmistakable—he drew a kunai from a hidden sleeve and held it close to his stomach, ready to prepare a strike.

Are we sure Naoki’s the issue in this town?” A bead of sweat rolled down his neck as he looked at the docks, then down to Daisuke, then back to the docks. “Tsukinaka-sensei, there’s a bowman at the docks. He’s trained his bow on you. If you step out into his line again, it looks like he’s going to--

The boy was cut off as a second man crept up behind him, tackling him down onto the stonetiled roof. The tiles snapped and broke under their combined weight, and Yuu’s shouting over the communication unit broke into static as his small little machine was destroyed under the adult’s bulk.

Using the Byakugan wasn’t as simple as extended vision—using something like the telescoping range limited the boy’s field of view. Keeping up multiple forms of enhanced vision gave him a nosebleed, and he wasn’t fond of using it. He wasn’t Kiyoko, after all. Even she started somewhere.

There wasn’t a lot of time to be feeling sullen at failing at his family’s defining characteristic, however. He plunged his knife into the man’s stomach as repeated blows fell down onto his head. His pale, pretty face was busted and bruised and lumping—but he kept stabbing upwards, finding purchase in the fat gut and repeating the action over and over. Someone on the ground level screamed, and the commotion started.

Unseen to the Hyuuga, Naoki started at the sound and started to find a place to hide—however, the nukenin hired to protect whatever that shipment was about starting moving into action.

In a port town, nearly everything centered on the docks. Which meant Daisuke wasn't too surprised when they found themselves closing in on the docks in their chase. He just needed to keep the man in his sights, make sure he didn't manage to escape again, and they could be done with the mission. But unfortunately, the business of the streets made that difficult.

As they got closer, the traffic got thicker on the streets. The smell and buildings of the docks set a shadow over their path. The atmosphere changed, and Daisuke didn't know if he liked it.

Then Yuu gave her warning, or tried to. Daisuke stopped in place, waiting for some other comment. But then he heard it. It was difficult with so many people around, but there was a whistle in the air. With Yuu's warning, he knew it was coming. It was just a matter of exactly where it would come from.

Daisuke's hand shot out, catching the arrow in the air. The angle, with where it came from, the attack had to be coming from...

He looked to the building, and saw a twinkle from multiple other projectiles. He leaped into the air, the arrows all striking the path just behind Daisuke. He pulled a set of kunai with his off hand, and launched them at the point of attack. As Daisuke ascended, the kunai curved toward the window he predicted was the place the attack came from. But by the time they tore the windowpane to shreds, there was no one there.

Daisuke landed on a roof near the street, and snapped the arrow in his hand.

"Yuu? Yuu!" That sharp snap of sound, was her equipment broken? Was this Naoki's doing? He scanned the street, looking for where Yuu would be. There was a commotion, people moving from a certain point, the best sign of a fight.

But then there were more whistles in the air, his attacker, from a new window. Smart, not attacking from the same point, staying on the move, taking advantage of the travel time of his kunai.

"Shima," Daisuke said as he reached into the bags of projectiles at his side, "If you can hear this, get to safety. Keep an eye out for Naoki, continue the mission."

Four arrows. His hands flashed out and four kunai left, striking the arrows out of the air, before he went back for seconds and launched a second set that sped toward the new sniper point.

Can't blow it up. He had no idea if anyone in there was innocent. Depending on how long this was set up for, it was likely the sniper was using the rooms of innocent people to strike from. His kunai flew into frame of the window, shattering wood and sending debris around. He was moving again, he had to be. But where, there were only so many windows on the building, and Yuu needed his help!

Daisuke filled both hands with kunai and shuriken. This was going to have to be quick, he was going to have to strike first.

There was a terrible crash as the crate that Shima had been struggling to carry slipped from his fingers. The man next to him let out a terrible shriek.

“Ah! Sorry!” Shima would have felt worse if not for the terrible action going on. People at the docs were beginning to panic as a battle took place in the skies above them. He could tell that it was Sensei doing battle with some unknown force. He wanted to help. He wanted to join his teacher, but instead turned to the ship he had been loading cargo on.

The Lonely Heart wasn’t a big ship by any means, but it was the one that Naoki had chosen to work with. That made it important. They all had a role, and his wasn’t combat, at least not yet. He did not need to hear the voice of his teacher telling him so over the radio, but it did little to help his conscious. The other dock workers had decided that they weren’t going to stick around for whatever was going down.

The head of the workers tried to control them, but they apparently decided that their safety was more important than money. He could use this, he knew. Slipping in under the cover of uncertainty he would get on that ship one way or another. Luckily the one way worked. The head dock worker never noticed him slipping onto the ship.

Now that he was on the ship, Shima was instantly aware of two situations, neither of them great. Number one, he was not built for the sea. The rolling of the ship did little to calm his nerves as he strode forth. The second? Well, the second was his radio was only giving out static now.

That was not good.
