"Really?" Arrows again?

She barely had time to get the disappointed remark off before having to unfurl the giant scroll around her spear and wrap it around her for protection once more, thankful that this trick still worked in its enhanced form. Still, hiding would only get her so far; she couldn't afford to keep being put on the defensive like that. That was how she always lost, and they couldn't afford to lose here - the outcome of a whole war was hanging on whether or not they could destroy these supplies, and the Rose Riders were the last thing standing in their way. Though, then again... What was it Sento always used to tell them in situations like this?

Don't let yourself get distracted; focus on the mission. Remember why you're here.

"Tch." She mentally chastised herself for falling right for the Rider's game. She and Kazuhiko had been all too eager to drop what they were doing and get into a real fight as soon as they'd shown up, and win or lose the Riders had already succeeded in stalling the two shinobi at a time when every second counted.

Fuck that.

Focusing chakra to her feet, she grabbed on tightly to the central core of her spear and pulled herself up, raising her legs as high as she could, before slamming them down on the roof with her full strength. The building already wasn't in the best health, with the chunk she had torn out of the side on her way up to face Lu Gao, and this next explosion rocked the roof with such force that she saw some of the archers that had been firing on her sent flying off of it from the shockwave alone, and what remained of the roof cracked and shattered under her feet, spreading outward across the whole thing, taking her and several riders down with it.

As she fell, she watched with satisfaction as the chunks of what had once been the roof crashed down and flattened the supply caches that had been inside the warehouse; that was one more down. Landing somewhat on her feet, she sprinted outside before the rest of the building finished collapsing under its own weight on top of her. She'd lost track of the Rose Rider himself during the fall, but at least she could see that she'd taken down another swath of his mooks, the ones she could see at least. Her clone army had vanished while she was busy and she couldn't for the life of her work out how, or who, had taken them down; of course, no one could hide from her for long. Her eyes began to blacken, clouding over like ink dropped into water, until they were like two dark voids - she gritted her teeth and clenched her fists to brace herself for the PTSD-like flash that always accompanied her bloodline, as her irises burned through the darkness and burst into rings of the erratic golden energy of the Mugenkugan.

Now lets see you stay hidden...

As far as Kazuhiko could tell, his plan was working. Those that had fallen to his earlier attack with his Nest were becoming vectors themselves. Gradually, their bodies began to grow nests of their own, filling the air with noxious spores and tendrils that crept out eerily. The spores were once again, karamushi eggs that, once they came into contact with any orifice or open wound, begin to rapidly hatch and multiply, severely dehydrating those effected.

That helped him deal with the mob – while the nests created in such a way weren’t explosive, their damage was enough to cause chaos within the ranks. The most pressing issue at hand were the trumpets of flame that moved to encircle him in addition to the advancing spearmen. His goal had been to lead the flamethrowers towards one of the warehouses, though he’d have to recalculate his plan in order for that to work.

He took a silent note.

Alright. I’m surrounded. Their rear ranks are having to deal with karamushi infection. There’s flamethrowers that are doing their best to turn me into a roasted cockroach. Without any honey glaze at that! The humanity! Oh right, focus. Spears are advancing, but not enough to be burned by the flames themselves. Which means, I either have to flee. Or I have to run through their ranks, which is a worse idea. What to do, what to do...

A few seconds later, a karamushi adult popped its head through the crease of his armor, between his shoulder and collarbone. The small creature opened its maw, letting out a hiss.

“Oh Mimi, hey girl, what’s – OH WAIT, OH KAMI NO!”

It felt like his insides were being rearranged as a torrent of worms erupted from his shoulder, linking together and shooting outward like a bad zip cable. They crashed into a nearby building, forming a chitinous casing as an anchor before using their combined strength to pull Kazuhiko up and over the encroaching crowd. It was… distressing. And not pleasant, particularly as they all began to slither back into the hole they had made. One or two had fallen away from the group, and Kazuhiko precariously aided them in getting back in, turning his attention to the building the cloud shinobi had more or less demolished.

If they took out their leader, they might be able to drop morale enough to win the fight.

Forming another couple of hand seals, another series of worms began to seep from between the cracks of Kazuhiko’s armor, though these were different, and much, much thicker, held together with chitin joints. Sixteen in total, each beginning their slow crawl back in the direction of the flamethrowers. Each could fire off a jet of infectious blood, and it appeared that their primary targets were the flame wielders, though they moved as a cohesive group, with the other flank taking aim at anyone who got too close. It was probably unfortunate that they could burrow into anyone who got too close too. One of the sixteen, however, buried into the ground, using the relays from Kazuhiko’s chakra to move toward its actual target.

As the building's roof came crashing down, the pieces smashed into the supplies inside with grandiose explosions filled with rice and meal. The whole facility was raining bits of cement and plaster, bits of flame from sparked infrastructure starting up small flames in what remained of the building. Overall it was a disaster, and the screams of the men inside echoed out onto the battlefield. The men fighting the bug-man were dealing with problems of their own, the terrible infestation in their back lines leading to chaos and panic. Men were scrambling to get away from their comrades that were covered and expelling the disgusting creatures. Others were trying to combat the strange worm-like creatures that were popping up, and others were destroying the disgusting goo-like masses around the field.

"The captain!" Shouted some.
"Focus, flames forward!"

The flames engulfed the new direworms in front of the flamethrowers, incinerating them before they could do their sickening duplication. Though the burrowing one was able to escape.

"Don't let it escape!" Another lieutenant in the group shouted, and spear carrying men followed the velocity of Kazuhiko as he sailed up. Weaker arcs of flame reached up from the chaotic bloodbath below to try to lick at him.

As for Hana, her sudden change in perspective let her see what had come of her clones. There was another group of assailants besides the Rose Riders. They were more spread out, moving with caution, stealth. They were back on the side of battlefield that Hana and Kazuhiko began on, before the Rose Riders had surrounded the area. It seemed that while Lu Gao was happy to attract attention, these others struck and then went back into hiding inside the other intact buildings. They were now all nestled inside one of the other warehouses.

There was no time to worry about that though. With a flourish, Lu Gao landed ahead of her as if he had leaped from the damaged rooftop from before. He turned and pointed his spear at her.

"Running away? Coward!" He barked as he charged in with his spear, the weapon seeming to shimmer as he approached and reached out to strike.

Hana clenched her jaw in frustration as she caught sight of the assassins hiding spot. Of course they had an extra squadron hidden to do their dirty work. Lu Gao's overtly dramatic entrance that Kazu had made such fun of began to make sense at last. While it would be a discredit to call him and the other Rose Riders a mere distraction, it was obvious now that they were overdoing the theatrics for a reason; not just to keep the shinobi distracted from their task, but also from being stabbed from behind.

"Kazu!" She called out as she began stepping forward toward the building in question. "Watch your back, they have Assassins hidi-" Her warning got abruptly cut off as Lu Gao himself dropped down infront of her, seemingly unscathed from the destruction or the subsequent fall - and from the looks of how he was holding his spear toward her, still dead set on keeping her from getting to the other warehouses. Begrudgingly, she had to admire their determination, and their tactics. Maybe there was some truth in their claim they were capable enough to defend the country themselves. But capability alone wasn't what made great leaders or protectors...

"Running to take care of your sneaky little friends, actually" She corrected, readying her own spear for whatever he might have planned. "Striking unseen from behind, remind me which of us is the cowardly one-woah!"

He was almost on top of her before she could even finish her thought, he was fast - Even her old sensei, one of the most physically capable warriors in Kumogakure, could only move that quickly with the gates. For a non-shinobi, Lu Gao was astonishing; if it weren't for the distance between them she would have never been able to unfurl her shield in time to do absolutely nothing. She tried to jump back as she saw the ghostly spearhead passing through, but could only get out of the way enough to be left with a deep cut to her thigh, rather than what would have been a fatal strike.

Fuck!

She gritted her teeth to try and fight through the pain, counting her blessings that at least as long as she was suspending herself slightly off the ground with magnetic force she could at least avoid putting weight on the injured leg, but it still hurt like hell with every movement. Even so, she was a Shinobi, from a land that had been in wars that put this paltry disagreement to shame since as long as she could remember - Lu Gao would need more than one good strike to take her out of the picture. As she regained her footing and braced for his next assault, she took two small circular devices, no bigger than coins, from the engineering kit sealed in her wristband and threw one of them behind her and slapped the other onto the flat face of her makeshift shield. She didn't much care where the second one landed, so long as it was somewhere else. The front of her shield glowed with what at first looked like transmission static, before settling into grainy footage of sky, and glimpses of other parts of the battlefield.

Lets see you pierce through a portal, Rosey...

As the battlefield around them was erupting in flames and screams, Lu Gao grinned at the new situation before him. He twirled his spear around, then brought it to a stop pointed in the woman's direction.

"Whatever your tricks may be!" He shouted, "I will be here to stop you!"

He charged forward as an explosion of flame went off in the distance, but instead of coming all the way to her location, he tossed his spear forward at her. As soon as it was released, it was clear that there was now a chain attached to the rear of it, rattling as it extended to its length of 10 feet before he yanked it back, and tossed it again with lethal accuracy, then again, and again.

The repeated chain attacks were still enhanced the same way as earlier, though that meant nothing to the strange portal now placed on her shield. But the flurry of throws were tossed out in a best attempt to keep her pinned to where she was.

In the background, Kazuhiko was able to keep away from the flamethrowers continuing to try to toss him, but the soldiers had a plan now, and were attempting to pin him to one location now that they had a general idea of his trajectory. It took all that he had to keep himself clear of the spouts of flame. Still, his insidious work was continuing among those that were already infected, the screams of panicking soldiers filled the night.

“Assassins?~”

Despite his predicament, Kazuhiko’s voice possessed a sing-songy quality. He had to be careful not to expend too much energy, but the mob that chased after him was making that exceedingly difficult. Luckily, the direworms had done what they needed to for the most part: The ones that remained continued their assault against the soldiers, doing their best to wreak as much havoc as they could. The ones that fell to the attacks, provided any did, would have their lifeless bodies form into Nests, just as the others did.

One, however, had been inching its way through the battlefield at a steady pace. Like a blossoming flower, it appeared underneath Lu Gao and leaped at him, doing its best to coil up his body and release a stream of blood at the man’s eyes. Its next objective was to bury its way into the general’s flesh; though given its fragility, it could easily be tossed aside.

“We’d better take care of them! I don’t like competition.”

Forming a few hand seals, Kazuhiko gathered his chakra for a genjutsu. The men that chased him most likely didn’t have any training when it came to combatting his mind games – a trait Kazuhiko was eager to exploit.

“Ninpo: Yokoni Ame!”

Out of know where, rain appeared to pick up, though it came with a distinct twist. The deluge of illusionary rain that followed did not come from the sky, but rather it blew on a horizontal axis. By impeding the men’s vision and slashing at them with his vespid adaptation whenever one drew too close, Kazuhiko began his retreat, or at least, his retreat to Hana’s side. Kazuhiko trusted that she was able to defend herself, but if the duo could kill Lu Gao, he assumed that the chaos and disorder he’d already sown, on top of the demoralization of losing their general, would end in victory by default for the pair.

The creature was swift enough to leap out and land on the one-eye captain. He was shocked out of his assault, trying to pin it down with his spear. But with only one eye to cover and an idea where the creature was heading, he managed to block its assault on his already limited vision with the point of his spear at the last moment.

That didn't save him from the genjutsu, which spread throughout the ranks and lead to more confusion among the already chaotic battlefield.

But there was something, somethings, moving through the chaos in an organized fashion. Of course, only Hana could sense them moving, metallic weapons moving in tight formation in ways impossible for the non-shinobi of Lu Gao's forces. She sensed them as soon as they got in range, and then soon after they were attacking.

There was a woosh as the air was disturbed by the incoming attack. Several weighted chains, kusarigama with weighted ends were flung out at the two shinobi in an attempt to bind them.

The 'assassins' were attacking both shinobi, four assassins for each. They were dressed in black coats with hoods up, high collars up to mask their faces up to their eyes. Their movements were focused on stealth, silent enough to be covered by the screaming and flames of the battlefield.

Once the assault began, it was clear that they were trying to surround them both, the chains coming from the nearest edges of the rooftops the fight had moved to.

There was one more, smaller in size but more leisurely. She sat on the next rooftop over, away from the chaos, toward the next building they needed to collapse. It was the building Hana's clones had vanished in. The woman sat on the edge of the rooftop, swinging one leg over the edge. Her hood was down, but her face was covered in a grotesque mask of an obsidian black skull. Her black hair hanging back from behind the mask.
