So, he hadn't really thought through his plan. He had always considered himself someone who was particularly good at planning; road trips, birthday parties, the dishes one should eat at any given restaurant. Escape plans were not necessarily the same thing, but the break down of time came easily to him regardless.

His clone had appeared. His clone had grabbed Jun'ko. Yuri had grabbed his clone. Everyone had disappeared as two explosions went off. Yoshibo's storm of anger was swallowed by the falling ceiling. Kugo was trapped and alone. Something had fallen on his foot and his whole leg thrummed with pain. Somewhere in the sound of rubble falling, the young boy's falsetto cries echoed.

He tugged and pulled at his leg until the rock rolled away, and he heard Yuri's voice again. He thought he was hearing things, as if he might have been losing his mind. But Yuri really was there, and yelling at him about his family. Kugo stopped his shouting and began hobbling away, away from Yuri and the throne room towards the threshold he had entered through, which was now half-blocked and shuddering with movement.

Every second step shot pain through his body and challenged his balance. Kugo's teeth bit into his tongue and the young boy, as he disappeared into the dark hallway, began to taste blood. It was a flavor he had only tasted when sucking on tiny scratches or the occasional cut. This was a different flavor, felt real, and was coupled by the sparks of pain from his leg.

Am I gonna walk normal ever again?

He didn't know for sure, as every step grew more difficult. The candles that had lit the hallway were now tumbled about the darkness. Half of them had been snuffed out. The others burned at unusual angles. He forgot how long the hallway had been before, but it felt imminently longer now. He imagined he would never make it out.

But just as he resigned himself to dying in a tunnel, a familiar face appeared beside him. His face.

"Come on, idiot! Move faster!" With this, his clone, who had dutifully returned to his side, wrapped his arm around the real Kugo and began to aid in their hobbling escape. "What the hell happened to your leg, dude?"

"I don't know. I think it's broken."

"Feh. That's why you shouldn't do dumb shit like rescuing princesses."
Kugo listened intently, having no room to appreciate the humor that he was literally talking to himself. His clone was right. He had been an idiot, and now he had to pay the price.

"Shut up. Let's get out of here."

The super-charged thug walked up to Ryu and attacked again, but that time around the jounin was prepared to dodge. He wasn’t relying on supernatural talents to magically avoid being hit. The jounin bent his knees, letting the opponent’s fist swing above him and countered with his armored fist, hitting the man in the gut with the claws of his gauntlet, drawing some blood.

The thug barely flinched and immediately struck at Ryu with his other fist, hitting him in the temple, knocking the jinchuuriki off balance. Ryu used the momentum of the knock and rolled back onto his feet and stood up once more. He knew that he wasn’t being overpowered but just need to go all out because the man in front of him wasn’t something to be taken lightly. The jounin was taught to be efficient, but his curiosity got the best of him. He wanted to know what exactly the juiced up thug was capable of.

The jinchuuriki focused the bijuu’s chakra into his eyes, allowing himself to see chakra in hopes of determining what he was dealing with, but it was just as Hamza stated earlier. The chakra seemed to resemble a bijuu’s, but it had to be related to the injection somehow. Ryu was more confused than he was before. Performance enhancing drugs did exist, but that extent was something rather extraordinary.

“Just use your swords already.” Hamza demanded. “It won’t survive a decapitation.”

Ryu grabbed his katana with his right hand and attacked the man once more, except with more speed and strength thanks to Hamza’s involvement. The thug expected the next attack to come from the blade, but just like before the jounin struck with his left fist, hitting the man in the temple forcing him to take a few steps back. The below was powerful and would have normally cracked a skull but the thug took it well and struck back immediately with a haymaker type of punch, however Ryu dodged it by nimbly stepping sideways and struck the man’s arm with the katana, chopping away a huge chunk of arm and without pause he struck again with an outwards swing, slicing open the man’s throat. It was brutal and effective. The beast of a man immediately fell.

“I said decapitation,” Hamza was in a sarcastic mood since the danger had passed. “But I guess this also works”

Seriously?” Ryu on the other hand was always serious, but he still respected the beast within so he didn't comment any further.

OOC: Used Bijuu senses

If sounds were colors the room would be a kaleidoscopic rainbow. Metal screamed, wood splintered, and glass hissed as it shattered. Yuri was running, slowly, but still running, each step now triggering that primordial urge to survive. He was high on adrenaline with a new sense overwhelming his brain. It was a foreign feeling for the competent jounin, the man with the immaculate rate of success.

This feeling left him confused, but he couldn't place it. His heart was thrumming like a bird, skin clammy with beaded sweat. A pain gripped his chest, like fire and oil.

Yuri was scared. He didn't feel fear. He never came close to death, he viewed it as something that happened to others. Death was a tool to utilize on a mission. Death solved problems. Yuri didn't like feeling as though death was coming for him.

Jun'ko sat on the ground in safety, slowly coming to. Some rubble had briefly struck her on the side of the head, and in the pain her consciousness decided to pause. Small hands rubbed her glassy eyes, trying to clear away the fog in his sight. The girl took a knee forward and braced herself, trying to hoist herself up to her feet. Her other leg, in refusal, decided to slip out, causing her to topple forward into the ground, catching herself with her hands. Then, just a single shake of her head. She rolled back to her bottom and pulled her legs in close, holding her head. In all the pain she still hadn't cried. Yuri wouldn't know until later, but for a damsel in distress, she was remarkably tough.

Yuri reached out, seeing double. Two Kugos stood before him, one uninjured and the other looking much worse for wear. He grabbed them both, to be sure, and with every fiber screaming at him in exhaustion, he pulled them back through the shadow, one last boulder slamming into his foot, shattering his toes in a dozen places.

The ride back was instantaneous, but still with the same feeling of dread and anxiety. Covered in sweat, Yuri rolled over, breathing heavily. Green chakra began to flicker from his hand. It sputtered out and tapered in, like a flame in high winds.

He reached out, ignoring the searing pain in his legs and sides, and placed in on Kugo, expending every last amount of energy he had into fixing the boys leg. His mission was to keep Kugo safe and save the girl. His mission wasn't to survive.

"We have the girl, were back at the rendezvous point. When you are free, we'll be here. Recovering."

This really hurt.

Kugo's breath nearly caught when someone grabbed him by the collar. He imagined Warlord Yoshibo breaking his collar bone and ravishing his body in the darkness of the tunnel. Or the big man with the ax coming back to life and slicing him down the middle. As his mind raced, his senses were overcome with the change of his vision, from candlelit tunnel to moonlit mountainside, erupting in flame.

Jun'ko was suddenly right next to him, and so was his clone. So too was Yoshiyuki Yuri, his weird savior for the night. And even now, as the man showed such clear exhaustion, the jounin flowed chakra through his hands and went to work on Kugo's latest wound. It was his second for the night. He imagined the sword that had pierced his belly had been a little easier to heal. He could see that he was not so lucky with his foot.

Regardless, as he lay on the grass, he found the pain of his wounds to be second to his other desires; to correct his foolishness, to get Jun'ko home, to never be a shinobi again.

And so he pushed Yuri's hands away, just as Jun'ko closed the gap between them and began looking Kugo over for the other places he had been scratched and bruised in the explosion.

"Stop fixing everything, alright?" Kugo's communication device was still off. He was only speaking to Yuri, even with his audience. Behind the group, the mountainside was still alit with the Dragon Hamza's fire. But the shouts of men coming to arms was completely silent. The mountain itself shook with movement, as if it would crumble into itself.

"I was dumb, and you shouldn't help me for it. Make me walk in a cast or hobble for the rest of my life, or something!" Kugo hissed. He was hoping, somehow, that he could milk this injury and become a lazy cripple for the rest of his short life. But beside him, Jun'ko frowned and his clone came over with an open hand and smacked the real Kugo right in the face.

"Shut up, idiot. Let him help you, and take a moment to thank the gods of fire that your ass isn't smushed like a bug. And stop acting like a spoiled brat." Kugo stared at his clone incredulously. He hadn't really signed up for this kind of treatment from himself, but the thoughtfulness it triggered caused Kugo to ask himself if his clone was showing him a part of himself that he often ignored.

With that, the clone fizzled into a wisp of fire, and then promptly into smoke. Kugo sat quietly dumbfounded, and waited.

The battlefield finally became quiet and there was nothing to be heard except for the crackling flames left by the katon user’s attacks. All that was left was a pile of dead bodies and a few burning buildings that were on their way to becoming just piles of ash.

Ryu stood over his victim’s maimed body for a few moments, just making sure no more strange things were happening with that corpse. It was a strange creature that he had no idea what it was capable of, so he couldn’t be sure of anything about it. However the jinchuuriki saw some solace in that anything even remotely human should have been killed by receiving such damage, but it still left an unsolved mystery. Maybe the syringe can give a clue.

The jounin first checked the thug’s pockets but they were empty. Unfortunately there was no second injection around and so Ryu quickly scanned the area for the used syringe. It was found several feet away from the corpse and so Ryu picked to examine it. It barely a few droplets left in it but it was all the jounin had to work with so he picked it up for examination by experts.

Yuri, before we leave there’s a corpse here that I’d like you to examine.” Kojirou wasn’t quite sure what he was asking his fellow jounin to inspect. “This person underwent some strange things that I’d like to know more about.

Yuri was the only medic around and perhaps he had the necessary knowledge to provide insight into what was used to produce such power. Ryu didn’t feel optimistic about his chances, because he felt that such power didn’t come from mere medical science; it was something far more sinister and powerful. There was something more to it than that, but it didn’t hurt to ask.

"C-childish..." he said, palms flickering out as Kugo hobbled away like a martyr. Ever the victim, the small boy proved his privileged life by slapping away a silver spoon because he could. Yuri wasn't offended so much as he was exhausted. Pulling off high level techniques like that back to back required a substantial investment of his reserves and he could feel his coils straining the continue coursing his green energy throughout his body. The boy and his clone spoke, exchanging what Yuri assumed was a pep talk.

Instead, the platinum Jounin stood up, sweat beading on his brow, and trudged over to the Senior operative and the corpse, leaving Kugo to deal with his own immaturity. Though if we were fair, Yuri was feeling equally irritable for phasing back with a clone. Anyone actually paying attention to the action would have only left when there was a certainty. Yuri guessed wrong and it nearly cost them the mission.

Once again Yuri's tired hands glowed alive, green life energy springing forth like a verdant flame. He placed his hands against the corpse, willing its deceased body to speak of the formerly inhabiting soul. The departed soul memory technique was a truly interesting jutsu in that sometimes Yuri got exactly what he needed and sometimes he got flashes of nothing. The state of the brain had a direct correlation to the integrity of the memories.

"He had a sharp pain..." Yuri said, coughing deeply. His stomach started cramping. "Oh, damn it, Ryu-san. That was his death. Let me comb back a bit more."

Yuri's hands seized up, fingers clenching. With a bright flash like an explosive tag going off, Yuri's hands popped with a slight wind, chakra dissipating like sand in a tornado.

"That's not right. Whatever he was remembering, that wasn't human. He wasn't using some routine jutsu. He was very focused mentally on drawing his power from somewhere, somewhere new. There was something there. Something else." Yuri looked up at Ryu, too bloodshot and tired to act gruff or insincere, "Someone else. It was almost... monstrous."

Yuri took a breath and barked out loudly to Kugo.

"If you want to keep all your parts, get back here. I will not hesistate to report you for treason. Willingly damaging Konoha military property through negligence is unlawful."

“Ah, okay”

Ryu didn’t really know what to expect from Yuri’s autopsy but he was a little disappointed at not getting results. He hoped to learn at least one bit of new information from the medic, but it seemed that a medical investigation wasn’t the right method to reveal information regarding that subject. It felt like the sort of issue that could only be solved by an unorthodox scientist with twisted methods. That wasn’t something that Kojirou had access to, but he hoped that scientists back in the village were better equipped to deal with it.

After the examination Yuri proceeded to yell at the genin and Ryu found it to be quite ridiculous, really. He was talking about treason and unlawfulness, even though it was Yuri who was disobeying orders at the beginning of the battle. The jinchuuriki knew that his plan was a good one and it saw that the mission was a complete success. If he were an ‘I told you so’ kind of person who would have rubbed it into Yuri’s face over and over again, but he wasn’t. Instead, he couldn’t really quite keep his mouth shut about the unlawful part.

You’re one to talk.” Ryu muttered under his breath. Then he raised his voice to announce the next step. “All that’s left is to take Jun'ko safely back to her people.

The first time the jounin thought the mission was over Jun'ko ended up getting kidnapped, but the enemy had been thoroughly eliminated since then. Ryu was quite confident that no one who had just witnessed the massacre happen would have even considered crossing his path. The jinchuuriki left his mark on that mountain and left it scorched as a lesson for anyone who considered going up against leaf shinobi; it wasn’t a bright idea.

Yuri was wiped clean from the skirmish. In just a few minutes he had thrown out several high level techniques, phasing between planes of reality in an instant, stepping back into shadows, and ultimately watching a man get destroyed by falling chunks of building. He had been beaten and bloodied, and still he carried himself admirably, fulfilling his obligations to the letter.

That's all that Yuri cared about, a technical success. Did he do things correctly? Maybe not the recommended way, but he always succeeded and he always got results. While the caged beast had thrown about some hot headed punches and interrogated a man, Yuri had infiltrated the lair and cut the head off the beast. Killing the warlord should put a damper, however temporary, on any retribution for the clan. For now they could have their precious Jun'ko back and enjoy the peace Konoha had purchased for them. Stopping back he could check on his sick patient, make sure she was making a smooth recovery.

He didn't like playing the part of doctor. In truth he only became a medic in order to torture and play with death. From a shinobi mechanical standpoint, death and the fear of it was an effective tool for maximizing results. Healing was too passive and weak for Yuri's likings. Yet he still had to do it, because damn it, teammates get hurt and some of them were deemed mission critical.

He stood up and sighed, looking over at Jun'ko. The wind had quieted and the hillside was utterly quiet except for the smoldering crackles of burning wood off in the distance. No screaming. No crying. Just them packing up to deliver the girl and the good news. Patient saved, warlord dead, family safe. All around a job well done.

Yuri smirked to himself. He couldn't believe he was feeling amicable.

"Well done, Ryu." Yuri continued walking forward, a dazed Jun'ko following behind him. "Mission success."

Remarkable.
