Hana just smiled meekly at Yuu. He put on a good front, but Hana knew the terrible truth behind it. The Byakugan was a coveted commodity, its ability unmatched by many other doujutsu. Not only could it see through illusions, but it was capable of enhancing one’s vision for miles, as well as giving that person the astute ability to see one’s chakra system. Hana had good eyes and an attention to detail, but she would never be on par with a member of the Hyuuga clan. Many others realized that painful truth as well, one that had nearly sparked a war over one hundred years ago.

Kannon was, more than likely, dead. The only strand of hope left for her to cling to was the fact that they hadn’t found the rest of him yet.

Hana watched as her teammate, undoubtedly in an effort to steer the conversation elsewhere, made sound effects. At first, she just sat there silent, but his way of talking an exaggerating the sound effects inevitably earned a soft chuckle. A small grin crept onto her face, and she reached for one of the ribbons he’d given her, letting her chakra run through it.

“Honestly, they’re better for company than anything else. Spending so much time by yourself gets lonely, you know? I’ve gotten a little addicted to breathing a little life into them lately. Every time it senses danger, it’ll give you a soft squeeze, and it likes to look around. It’s kind of like having a pet snake.” She shrugged, increasing the amount of chakra that flowed through the ribbon. She doubted Yuu was interested in seeing her juvenile attempt to have at least some sort of companionship.

After a few seconds, the ribbon she held began to whirr around her arm, complete with its own sound effects. It sounded like a metal saw cutting through the air, moving just as fast. After a moment, she let it loose, aimed a short distance away, toward the ground. It moved rather quickly before it hit the earth, stirring up grass and dirt as it attempted to tunnel into the ground. It went on for quite some time before Kioko hopped over to retrieve it.

“Hana-chan! You shouldn’t be getting your present dirty!”

Yuu hopped up onto the picnic table and sat his rear on the table surface, folding his hands over his thighs and watching Hana's ninjutsu demonstration. Her talk of loneliness wasn't anything new, but it always ate away at his heart a little bit. He knew she wasn't trying to make him feel guilty, but he could tell that she was hurting...it wasn't something he was fond of. He didn't even know the beginning of feeling lonely, with his large family and overeager cousins that always had supported him. Then on top of that, he had been effective at making friends and bridging the gap of lifestyle between most anyone else he met in Konoha. Hana, however...seemed to lose everyone that was important to her.

Except for Yuu, himself.

"You've got that bird, too, you know." The two Konoha genin had both been chosen by separate avian houses, further pushing them apart...but in a way, it also made him kin. Summoners inside the Hidden Fire were rare enough, and to be a pair both blessed by different skyward ninja was an honor.

He smiled at Kioko. “They’re supposed to get dirty. They’re combat ribbons, as weird as that sounds.

The boy stretched his back out and held his hands behind his head, grinning over at Hana. “But, jeeze, chuunin, huh? In Omoi, that makes you, like...eligable to be an assassin or a diplomat, right? Have you thought about that?

It was weird. Hana had gone from friend, to teammate, to rival, to an authority figure in such a small amount of time. Hana-taicho had a nice to ring to it, anyway.

Hana chuckled.

“Yeah, I do have Kioko. And the rest of her family. Kioko’s the sweetest one out of them all though.”

The bird let out a little coo, a blush overtaking her naked head as she brought a talon behind her, rubbing it against her other leg before hopping back towards Hana, putting the ribbon in her hand. The chakra that had coated it seemed rather useful for keeping most of the grime off: She gave it a little wave, and a few more chunks of the dirt fell off. She shrugged.

“I guess you’re right about that. They’ve had me doing a lot of killing lately. And I’ve kind of done some of it without clearance in order to save a mission.” She let out a loud sigh. “Maybe bad things happen to me because I’m a bad person. I did kidnap that Warlord’s child to lead him away from our caravan in Bird, but… I did save his mom’s life; she was a concubine. They actually live in Leaf, now.” She shot Yuu a wry smile. “I see them sometimes, but she’s so busy trying to stay on her feet, I don’t know how long it’ll be until I see them again.”

Her feet drummed against the earth, and she stared out into the horizon, focused on nothing. Hana seemed lost in thought, as if the weight of her new responsibilities had just hit her. She didn’t mind killing – she had chosen her path. She did mind, however, the conscious decisions she was having to make. The lines between good and evil had since begun to blur: She had begun to realize that Konohagakure was not the beacon of righteousness that it claimed to be. It was, however, her home. And if that meant scheming to protect it from outsiders, then that’s what she would do.

Yuu lightly tapped her on the back of the head with the edge of his palm.

You’re not a bad person, Hana-chan.” He tilted his neck and let out a whining little grunt. “Ninja have to do bad things. It’s part of our job. But that means someone sent in the request, someone paid for it, the Hokage’s office approved it, then it got to the mission office, then it ended up in your hands. Someone once told me so long as you have two people left on the planet, someone’s gonna want someone else dead. It’s just human nature. If it wasn’t for ninja, people would be at full out war all the time. It’s a very delicate balance.

He shrugged and took a few steps around her to eye her up and down. “Konohagakure isn’t the symbol of peace I thought it was. It’s more like a stern tyrant...but because of it, Fire Country is relatively at peace. A few hundred years ago and the world was made up of nothing but chaos and fighting all the time, down to individual clans of families going at it. Now a ninja team can cut anything off at the roots. It’s bloody, it’s messy, but it works. Besides, there’s lots of fun missions, too. Capturing bears, delivering delicious foods, helping with repairs...I’ve done all sorts of cool stuff that didn’t involve getting my palms bloody.

Thumbing his nose, he continued. “Besides, it feels sort of cruel to admit it, but it’s fun to win in a life or death battle. Like all my training comes up to one point, do or die, and I do it. Maybe one day that’ll catch up with me and I’ll get taken down, but until then, I think I actually enjoy it.

A long sigh. “Does that make me bloodthirsty? Maybe Konoha really is a pit of violence. But it’s our pit, and look how pretty it is!

He extended his arms to the colorful trees and rolling grass punctuated by state of the art buildings and electrical wires crossing around them, the juxtaposition of natural beauty combined with overwhelming progress. “You’re the future of this village, Hana-chan. Aim ever higher, that’s my ninja way. Maybe those words will inspire you, too.

She shrugged.

“I learned a long time ago that the world isn’t black and white; it’s gray. Very, very gray.” She looked at him thoughtfully while they discussed Konohagakure in particular. The two seemed to have very similar beliefs when it came to their home, and more specifically the people who ruled over it. “You’re right about the tyranny, though. The Hidden Leaf is known for their strong shinobi for a reason – we crushed Yukigakure into the ground all those years ago. Almost total annihilation. Like, naturally, you can’t kill everyone, but Konoha destroyed a culture. It’s almost as awe inspiring as it is scary.”

Hana smiled a little bit as he proceeded. Maybe their views did align after all – Ama had a huge impact on her when it came to how she looked at the world, but maybe she did Yuu too. Or maybe, he had just been smart enough to pick it up on his own. Looking back on her life, Hana had always been a follower; she adhered to her orders and moved with the herd. Maybe it was time she took her own initiative – maybe it was time for her to lead too.

“I’ve never thought about a nindo, Yuu. Compliance has always been my way, you know? I love Konohagakure so much. Not everything that it does is necessarily with good intent, but its my home, and if anything, I’m loyal.” She looked at him for another moment then shrugged again, digging with her heel into the ground.

We are the future.” She corrected him, bringing her gaze back to meet his. “I might have gotten promoted first, but you’re still very, very strong in your own right.” She thought about mentioning his birthright, the Byakugan, but something advised her against it. She knew how Yuu felt, bearing the weight of the responsibility that his family put on his shoulders. While Hana missed hers, she was more than thankful that she didn’t have to go through what his made him do.

I believe strongly in compliance,” He admitted, his voice softening. “I don’t think that’s a very good way to live your life, though. I think it’s a good starting point, but...

A smile, disarming and sudden. “Itsuki Hana never gives up.

It was an observation you didn’t need a kekkei genkai to gleen, a simple truth of the character of the girl before him. Despite everything in the world crumbling around her, she never truly faltered for more than a moment. Perseverance despite the growing reputation of being a mistress of death, a bad-luck charm that lead to injury or worse. While Yuu himself wasn’t particularly scared of the superstition, he couldn’t help but notice that she was chosen by the Vulture clan of all things. The reaper seemed to miss Hana entirely, but took everything else away from her. Maybe it was just sheer dumb luck that Yuu himself had managed to survive this long.

But all this was starting to get heavy, on what was supposed to be a happy celebration. It was eerily punctuated, though. Was Yuu really the only remaining friend she had in the village? He bit down on his lip as he pondered that frightening reality.

You know, with a member of the team being a chuunin and all, we can probably do more exciting missions now.

Folding his hands behind his head again, he closed his eyes and rocked on his heels, as if it was the greatest concept to come out of his lips. “No more flower-picking or mail-delivery missions. Hopefully no more undead or ghosts, either. Good old fashioned ninja work. Shadow tactics! Fighting on rainy rooftops!

He peeked at her, one eyed, and stuck out his tongue. “Although, knowing our luck, we’ll end up catching some rich old dude’s lost cat or have to train academy students in Advanced Nunchuck Skills.

“Part of me wishes I could go back to catching cats or putting up with a couple of brats.” Hana looked towards the ground, laughing slightly. Having since switched divisions, she was no longer the soldier sent to reinforce borders or guard whatever needed it. Sure, she was still assigned to the occasional mission, but for the most part, she was an assassin. She was sent out with only a single purpose in mind – to kill any enemies of Konohagakure or anyone that they wanted dead. What scared her the most was that she had gotten good at it. Killing had become a second nature for her, almost a hobby.

Either way, it was within her job description, so she couldn’t complain. There were plenty of other shinobi much better at it than her – she was only a chuunin, after all.

It was a little bit of a relief to think of it in that regard; she wasn’t the most infamous killer, at least yet. The thought of death, however, caused her to turn her attention back to Kioko. The vulture was still around, albeit engaged elsewhere. Hana spotted her tearing into some kind of carcass, one that looked to be a large rodent. The sight made her shudder a little bit.

“I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’m excited for this new chapter. I’m excited for the responsibility. I’m excited for the pay increase.” She chuckled. “It just feels weird that I’ve been so focused on getting better at being a shinobi that I’ve let other stuff go wayside. When my family died, when Izanagi and Ama died, I just sort of threw myself into work. I never really picked up on a hobby or anything, like ever. It’s just weird to me, that all I really do is sleep, eat, and kill. But I guess I’m not the only shinobi that lives like that.”

Yuu let out a long whistle as he looked Hana over, shrugging his shoulders. “Hobbies? For a ninja?

He rolled his index finger against his thumb as he thought it over and cocked his head at her. “It’s not atypical to only focus on the life of a shinobi. It’s admirable, practically required to be at the top of your game. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t spend five hours in the morning in physical training. Then there’s kata training and studying chakra systems and medical training...

At some point he had started counting on his fingers. “Cross training with other taijutsu specialists, doing mission reviews, volunteering at the academy, reading jutsu scrolls at the library, plus whatever missions the Hokage’s office has assigned me that day. When I catch a break I’m either doing something like this, here –

He gestured at the little get together. “Or maybe fishing. You could count that as a hobby, I guess – but it started and remains to be Byakugan training. Kind of difficult to permeate different materials with the magic eye, you know.

Well, she wouldn’t know – but she knew what he meant. Maybe.

I understand the desire to be something other than an agent for Konohagakure, but you’d have to give up a lot of what makes you a shinobi.” He rolled his shoulders back as he thought about it. “I guess training doesn’t count as a hobby, though. Hmm.

Life wasn’t all about murdering and clumsily trying to establish an emotional bond with your teammates, was it? Yuu rubbed the back of his neck as he tried to think of something polite to say.

Immediately after promotion is no time to start thinking about taking it easy. Maybe you can learn to integrate hobbies into your work.” He reached into his hanging sleeve and pulled out a small book, handing it over to the girl. “This is Valiant and Voyager, uh..

A sharp blush. “It’s kinda a kid’s book. About a warrior and a poet who travel the world. It’s kind of fun, if you find the time to get into it.

Hana took the book, giving it a once over. In truth, she couldn’t remember the last time that she had finished a novel – more than likely, it had been in the academy. Still, she flipped through the pages for a second or two, letting her eyes flicker over a few passages before she turned it over, eyes skimming over the back for a summary. It sounded a tad bit juvenile, but the young woman figured that she was in fact, still a child, even if her prowess at killing said otherwise. It was an odd thought that she might balance childish naivety with an adult sense of warfare, but one that she was eager to explore if it meant preventing the loss of her sense of humanity.

She broke the silence after a moment, offering Yuu a weak smile. “I’ll have to start reading it. It’ll give me something to do at night, anyway.” She figured that getting out of her own head and into the one of a character might even prove to be therapeutic for her. “But, Yuu, it sounds like you’re more focused on your studies than me.” Hana looked up at him, cocking her head to one side. “You spend most of your time training, and I feel like I spend most of mine on missions. Sure, you have a lot more studying to do than me, what with medical ninjutsu and all, but aren’t you like, forcing yourself to go over everything?” She gave him a weary look. “I’m not saying that you don’t enjoy it or anything, but… Five hours? A day?”

She folded her hands neatly atop the book after sitting it in her lap, appearing concerned. “I’m not saying that all of the training isn’t bad, but… Don’t you get tired? Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.”

Yuu ran his hand against the back of his head, against the thick bristle of his hair, and let out a long and rich laugh. He tilted his head towards Hana and gave her a shrug. “If you asked many of the members of my clan, you’d find that all my medical academia is considered easy studying time. If you want to be on top, you have to put in the hours. Since I don’t get as much field work as you do, I have to put forward my efforts in other ways.

Besides, it’s fun. I want to have the sharpest mind, the strongest body, the quickest reflexes. I have a lot of people way stronger than me that I want to be able to beat one day.

He thrust out a palm strike in the air in front of him, his form a mere mockery of the mastery of his father – and of his cousin Kaito, notably – but it was a strong and focused strike, so far removed from the more clumsy attempts of his early geninhood. Even without the aid of a chakra infused rush, it vibrated with sheer power. Taijutsu specialty, granted by the birthright of his bloodline limit, and tempered by his zealous attention to training and study.

That means you, too, now.” A playful grin as he repeated his thrusting shadowboxing, and then pointing at her with all the drama of a young hero. “I don’t wanna be a footnote in the legend of Itsuki Hana!
