Samurai

Samurai are historic warriors of the Engi world, and their forces served as the agents of governments and daimyo across the known world until modern shinobi rose to prominence. Now the first and last bastion of samurai strength, The Last Legion, resides in Sennou no Shi in Iron Country and serves as a powerful neutral force. There are Samurai that have rejected and turned away from the Legion. They are referred to as 'Ronin,' samurai without liege. They are regarded as irresponsible at best and oathbreakers at worst. The Legion does not usually actively pursue a ronin's death, incarceration or reformation.

Where shinobi shape their inner strength into chakra that suits their purposes, samurai meditate to bring their spiritual core to a place of balance. They call the energy they draw from this balance chi, which they use to control their samurai arts.

Affiliations: The Last Legion, Isolated Samurai Families, Wealthy Employers
Ranks: Shi (Genin), Bushi (Chuunin), Uruwashii (Jounin)

Samurai training usually begins when the aspirant is a young adult, somewhere between fifteen and eighteen, though the Last Legion welcomes anyone who is willing to walk the path of honor and balance with open eyes and an open heart. Traditionally a shi grows under the tutelage of a single master, with help from the rest of the Legion, until they become a bushi. While uncommon, it is not unheard of for ronin to teach shi of their own without help from the Last Legion, though such samurai will not be formally recognized as such by the Legion. As adults of a measure themselves, shi are granted far more freedom and autonomy than shinobi genin are.

The title of uruwashii is not formally granted, and is instead simply a measure of a bushi’s intense martial prowess. An uruwashii does not necessarily have more political power or authority than a bushi of the Last Legion, they are just known to have more skill in combat.
Rules
Samurai cannot take genjutsu or ninjutsu in any capacity, but may take stages in any taijutsu they have available to them at one jutsu point per stage as long as each taijutsu uses a different weapon. Even if a special technique explicitly mentions the use of chakra, a samurai's closeness to martial prowess and the formless, flexible nature of chi allows them to use it. They have no usage limits.
Unique Archetypes
Spiritualist
Special: May Pick Two Miko Trees And Take Them As A List, With Two Usages A Thread
Primary: Physical
Stats: +1 Strength, +1 Control, +1 Power, -1 Speed, -1 Tactics, -1 Reserves
The spiritualist is a unique breed of samurai, steeped deep in occult lore and religious meditation. This closeness with the spirits and small gods allows the spiritualist to go into communion with the hidden world and make limited use of kami, much as Miko do.

Relic Bearer
Special: The Samurai Has Ten Extra WP That Must Be Spent On One Weapon
Primary: Physical
Stats: +2 Tactics, +1 Stamina -2 Control, -1 Strength
Samurai are users of a great variety of weapons, but the Relic Bearer is special. Whether they have inherited it from their master, uncovered it from some hidden place or otherwise acquired it, the Bearer holds a weapon of great power and wields it with honor to carry out their bushido.

Speed Demon
Special: Can Instantly Travel A Number of Steps Equal To Twice Their Highest Tai Once Every Three Posts
Primary: Physical
Stats: +3 Speed, -2 Intelligence, -1 Power
Shinobi like to pretend that they are the quickest and the fastest warriors around. The speed demon does not care because they know the truth, and they quietly prove themselves right every day.

Blind Swordsman
Special: Cannot See, Understands Everything Within Ten Meters From Other Honed Senses.
Primary: Physical
Stats: +2 Tactics, +1 Control, -2 Stamina, -1 Power
The soft crinkling of the leaf underfoot, the soft gasp of a breath of air, the smell of nervous sweat; they know it all. The Blind Swordsman’s mastery of chi has allowed them to push the senses they still have to the absolute limit and turn the information they do get into a clear picture that they use to further their Bushido.

Iai Master
Special: Whenever Cutting From a Draw, the Iai Master Cuts Through Any Mundane Materials, Including Weapons.
Primary: Physical
Stats: +2 Speed, +1 Strength, -1 Willpower, -2 Power
The Iai master lives for the frozen moment before combat begins, when both opponents have their hands on their weapons. They have practiced that first breath, the first pull of the sword from the sheathe, until that first cut has been refined into a kind of art. The Iai master is never closer to victory than the first moment of battle.

Note to Combo Archetype Makers: The Samurai Archetypes Should Not Be Used As An Example Unless You’re Making a Samurai Archetype.

Miko

The Miko are workers of divine magic, calling on the spirits and small gods of the hidden world to cause miracles. There have always been Miko and there will always be Miko. These usually female magic users preside as local shamans and caretakers for villages, towns and small swaths of land across the world, sometimes presiding over shrines that they maintain as their home or sometimes wandering the world as traveling Miko to bring their wisdom and talents on the road. Large cities sometimes have enormous or numerous shrines, filled with Miko, trying to do the work across the city that a single practitioner could have done in a small town. They do not have a larger organization they are beholden to, except those that are part of larger temples. Instead, Miko are a vast collection of individuals scattered across the world with similar methods and goals.

While Shinobi and Samurai make use of the inner strength that courses through their inner coils, a Miko's power comes from without, drawn from the spirits of the water, land and sky. Both the nameless, invisible spirits they borrow power from and the divine energy they use to perform their miracles are called kami. When miko deviate too far from the restrictions and rules that govern them, their ability to manipulate the kami changes and they become witches, or black miko. Black miko are considered impure, twisted shadows of their art by other miko, who treat them as dangerous monsters to be exorcised or destroyed.

Affiliations: Small towns, villages, religious shrines all over the world
Ranks: Ichiko (Genin), Ateji (Chuunin), Reibai (Jounin)

Not everyone can connect with the kami of the hidden world. Traveling miko and nearby shrines will frequently attempt to test children from the surrounding area to see who among them seem to be loved by the kami. Those they discover tend to be female. If they receive the family’s blessing, those children are taken to a larger shrine and taught to harness their powers under the guidance of several senior miko, or traveling under the apprenticeship of one traveling miko. This usually begins in their early teens and continues into young adulthood, and while training they are called ichiko.

When an ichiko leaves training they are considered ateji and traditionally find a shrine of their own from where they can ply their craft—which most establish near their home towns. Elder miko or miko with especially potent powers may reach a level where they are thought of as reibai, a senior shaman. Not a formal title, a reibai is a recognition of strength among the loose community of mikos. A reibai can be one of the most potent mikos in a larger temple, or an especially powerful miko from the country that nearby miko may come to asking for help with problems they cannot solve on their own.
Rules
Miko must take Paths of the Shrine Maiden as one of their lists. In addition, they are free to take taijutsu as well as any lists that non-shinobi normally have access to, substituting spirit for chakra or chi, but cannot take ninjutsu or genjutsu of any kind.

Miko also mold their energy in a unique way. Their spiritual or kami power is poured evenly into any Miko power, so they do not use the typical chakra usage rules.

Unique Archetypes
Blessed Bushi
Special: Once per thread, the miko may dispel a single enemy ninjutsu by striking it with weapon. As a ritual, she may remove all stat penalties from another person, who recovers from fatigue as if fully rested..
Primary: Physical
Stats: +2 Strength, +1 Speed, -1 Power, -2 Reserves
The Blessed Bushi blends martial technique with divine teaching. With weapon in hand, she wades through the battlefield, calling on the spirits to protect her allies and lay waste to her enemies. Often mistaken for samurai, the Blessed Bushi is as much a student of war as ritual.

Spirit Talker
Special: Once per thread, the miko hears the voices of the kami and may break out of all genjutsu affecting her. As a ritual, she may ask the kami a yes/no question and receives a true answer.
Primary: Chakra
Stats: +2 Power, +1 Control, -1 Tactics, -2 Stamina
While all miko channel the power of the spirits, the Spirit Talker communicates with them on a more fundamental level. She hears them whisper and visits them in her sleep. The Spirit Talker walks the line between the world of the living and the realm of spirits, and she must mind that gap.

Divine Scholar
Special: Whenever the miko takes a secondary path technique, they may instead take a universal ninjutsu of the same stage, like a swap technique. She must meet all special requirements, such as necessary archetypes.
Primary: Chakra
Stats: +2 Control, +1 Intelligence, -1 Speed, -2 Strength
A student of ancient, lost techniques and a bastion of information regarding spirits, chakra, and chi, the Divine Scholar is at home among scrolls and tomes. Through her wide knowledge base, she's capable of even stranger feats than most miko, and her thirst for learning drives her to gain yet more mystic power.

Sin-Eater
Special: Once per thread, the miko calls on the spirits to alter causality, allowing her to redirect the effects and injuries of any one attack to herself. As a ritual, she may lay hands on a recently deceased corpse and see the last five minutes of their life.
Primary: Chakra
Stats: +1 Power, +1 Control, +1 Willpower, -3 Tactics
Sin-Eaters are those miko most concerned with the rituals of death and the nature of the beyond. Called upon before funerals, the Sin-Eater oversees the process of absolving the deceased of sin and guilt, allowing them to pass on in peace, by taking the spiritual stain into themselves. Sin-Eaters manipulate life, always aware of the looming presence of death.

Holy Vessel
Special: The miko gains additional power usages at levels 1, 4, and 6. Additionally, the miko is always aware of the presence of bijuu and their hosts.
Primary: Chakra
Stats: +3 Reserves, -3 Stamina
Overflowing with divine energy, the Holy Vessel is a true conduit for the power of spirits. She feels the hum of chakra, chi, and all other life currents. As a wellspring of spiritual power, Holy Vessels are often the lead priestesses of their shrines, but are enticing to creatures from the other world, who see them as doorways to the physical plane.

Note to Combo Archetype Makers: The Miko Archetypes Should Not Be Used As An Example Unless You’re Making a Miko Archetype.

Non-Shinobi

Technically speaking, all the character types listed here are non-shinobi. However, for our purposes, when 'Non-Shinobi' is put into the character type that means that the character is an ordinary person not trained in spiritual magic of any specific kind, or otherwise divorced from the systems and abilities of others. With that considered, the varieties of non-shinobi out there are practically endless.

Non-shinobi are everywhere. They are everyday mercenaries that rely on strength of arm rather than spiritual power, they are farmers, craftsmen, nobles that have never touched a weapon in their lives and more.

Affiliations: Literally, actually everywhere
Ranks: Wakamusha (Genin), Tsuwamono (Chuunin), Kounomono (Jounin)

More than any other character type, a non-shinobi's rank can vary depending on their lifestyle because they are based mostly on martial prowess and training, and many non-shinobi go through their life without getting any professional training whatsoever. Therefore, most people live and die without moving past Wakamusha.
Rules
Non-shinobi cannot take ninjutsu, genjutsu or taijutsu with any supernatural flavor. Special techniques can be forbidden to them as well, if they are obviously supernatural in nature. They are limited to taijutsu and explicitly non-shinobi lists.
Unique Archetypes
Blank Slate
Special: After A Thread Is Completed Can Adopt Another Archetype and Become the Associated Character Type.
Primary: Any
No matter how grand or powerful someone is now, in the beginning they were nothing. Blank Slate knows this, and they know that while they are not so impressive now, one day they will become something new.

Leader
Special: Has Three Loyal Non-Shinobi Retainers. Uses Beastmaster Rules For Techniques and Progression. May Give All Their TP To Retainers.
Primary: Any
Stats: +2 Tactics, +1 Willpower, -1 Power, -2 Stamina
Perhaps they are members of the noble class, and pay their servants to follow them. Or it could be that they are military commanders, with loyal underlings lining up to follow them. Or perhaps they are charismatic individuals with a vision that attracts men and women to rally behind their cause. Whatever the reason, this non-shinobi is a true leader.

Five Minute Hero
Special: May Take Celestial Gates. May Open Gates Four Consecutive Posts Per Thread With No Penalty. (Except The Death Gate) Gates Then Automatically Shut Down Without Crippling User.
Primary: Physical
Stats: +2 Stamina, +1 Willpower, -2 Intelligence, -1 Reserves
Shinobi first learned the use of the gates from the Five Minute Hero. Their inner coils are uniquely mutated, making them utterly unfit for the practice of any magical arts. But they do allow the use of the gates in short, safe and startling bursts, pushing these normally ordinary human beings to accomplish feats of incredible physical ability until their bodies shut it down again.

Lie Detector
Special: You Know Whenever Someone is Lying to You. No Techniques Stop This. The Only Time This Does Not Work is if They Are a Lie Detector.
Primary: Any
Stats: +2 Intelligence, +1 Willpower, -2 Strength, -1 Power
Some people are very hard to mislead. To you, those people are naïve as toddlers at a poker table. Whether it’s hard-won experience or a natural instinct, you know whenever someone is lying to you. The Lie Detector can use this ability to maneuver themselves into positions of power, because they are unique in knowing exactly who around them can and can’t be trusted.

Survivor
Special:
The Survivor Cannot Die Even From Things That Would Normally Kill Them. The Player Has Final Say Over Whether or Not The Survivor Dies.
Primary: Any
Stats: +3 Willpower, -2 Reserves, -1 Stamina
The Survivor is . . . Sticky. You can’t get rid of them. You can cut their throat, and they’ll be back with a horrible mark on their neck. Stab them in the heart, and it turns out their heart is a little to the left. Throw them overboard, and another ship will pick them up, sputtering, when they try to raise anchor. Shear their head from their neck, and they wake up a month later on the shore with a nasty scar. The Survivor refuses to die, in bafflement of all logic. Some call it luck, others call it an old miko’s blessing—or a witch’s curse—but the end result is the same either way.

Note to Combo Archetype Makers: The Non-Shinobi Archetypes Should Not Be Used As An Example Unless You’re Making a Non-Shinobi Archetype.
