"Oh, my GOD," Yuri yelled, throwing his hands up in the air. "You're absolutely impossible! The kid is fine! If you're going to just charge in there on the front line without so much as gauging the situation, I'd say you're the one making the tactically unwise decisions!"

Yuri dashed forward and notched an arrow, cleanly picking off a lone guard ahead of Kugo. Yuri managed to catch up with the boy quickly, as he was a rather speedy little infiltrator. He moved aside the leaves Kugo crossed moments before. Watching from behind he could see Kugo venture forth, dim candles flickering, giving off pale spheres of soft gold. The shadows danced on the walls, gently waving as though in a romantic embrace. Yuri couldn't help but feel like this place used to be something much more innocent than it was now. It wasn't always a den of sin, was it?

"I'm behind Kugo," he stated simply in his mic, uncharacteristic annoyance rising up in a swell. This dragon bitch really got on his nerves. "If you have any other direct orders, please hesitate to keep it to yourself. We'll leave the intelligent tactics to the smart people."

Yuri blanched. Getting emotional wasn't like him. Getting frustrated wasn't like him. This whole mission had him acting more and more like a, well, typical person. He didn't like it.

"That was rude." Yuri brushed his hair lightly, following Kugo a little further in. He notched another arrow and pulled the string taut, sending an arrow into a small metal sconce at a corner, where it resounded with a sharp clank. He needed to see if people were in here.

"Did you hear that?" came a man's voice from the darkness. Heavy footsteps got progressively louder.

The men were coming.

The men were coming, but Kugo was still abuzz with the words he had heard over the radio device in his ear. He clung for dear life to the word of Yuri in his mind.

The kid is fine!

That was all he had heard, all he had though to hear as he crept past another row of candlelit hallway towards a ray of light cast by a doorway in front of him. He knew that on the other side of that threshold lay Warlord Yoshibo, his most immediate henchmen, and Jun'ko, his charge, the woman to whom he had unconsciously and inadvertently signed his duty to. Was this what it meant to be a Gyousou? Was this what it meant to be a shinobi? Did he like this? Did he want this?

He didn't know, as shadows clouded the ray of light and the promise of bodies - of warriors - lit a new fire in his mind. He was reminded, immediately, of something he had ignored at the time he had heard it. These were words of Gyousou Hiobi.
We, the shinobi of Konoha, are the true soul of duty. We light the fire of faith in good, and we are bound to the act of helping the helpless. Did you hear that, Kugo? Kugo?! Did you hear that?
And heavy footsteps got progressively louder.

Into the darkness, a man, a big man, with an axe equally as large, appeared and stared into the darkness with a squint, blinded by the transition from a fully lit room into a hallway of pitch darkness, and Kugo was standing there, not three feet from him, moving his hands and feeling a great fright, that his body had led him into a situation he would never have stepped into. He wasn't meant for this work. This was his family's expertise, but this was not his.

Katon: Shuriken No Jutsu!

A single flame, much like the flames of the candles in the hallway, shimmered through the darkness, and surrounded a single flying shuriken - a shaken, really, six-sided and shaped like a lotus flower, a shape of a Gyousou masterwork projectile.

With a quiet sound, much like a sword being sheathed, the flying, spinning comet stuck, perfectly, into the nook where eyebrows and nose met, the dead center of the lower forehead, and the man's face blistered in flame until the axe slipped from his hand, clattered to the floor. The heavy fall of a dead man followed the sound, as the brute toppled to the ground, a look of great surprise burned onto his face in death. The heavy grumble of a warlord on the other side of the threshold began to erupt into the dark caverns of Kasobi Mountain. How had the young boy done it?

The world may never know, as the erupting command of Warlord Yoshibo to his immediate cabal of warriors bellowed through the moist walls of Kasobi Mountain's cave systems. More footsteps, more sounds of weapons unsheathed.

Oh no. What have I done?

The crowds started to gather more and more around Ryu. They knew that they stood no chance against the shinobi in single combat and it was practically suicide for them to do so, so they attempted to swarm him with numbers. Ryu was actually counting on them to do just that. His plan was going well as he was drawing out more and more of them. There were a few dealing with the fire that he started in an attempt to stop it from spreading while the rest in the area were there to fight the lone man.

Everything was going according to plan. A large crowd was formed to face the jinchuuriki, forming a half circle in front of him. The men were easy pickings in that formation as they were bundled up too closely together, hindering their mobility to evade what they were about to be hit with.

After focusing his chakra Ryu stretched his left arm forward, aimed at the man furthest to his right side and dragon shaped flamethrower was formed from armored palm. The stream of fire went right through the first couple of men and it hit the structures behind them, lighting them on fire too, but the katon user didn’t stop there. He started moving the stream of fire to the left side of the group. Some of the Yoshibo’s men managed to dodge by lying on the ground while others were burnt by the fire. Their sloppy formation was in shambles after the attack and several structures behind them were lighting up the sky in a blaze of glory.

The jounin then cut off his stream of fire. He actually didn’t want to kill them all immediately. He was always a man of efficiency and normally preferred to end things quickly, taking no unnecessary risks and avoiding pointless complications but his task wasn’t just to kill a large number of people right there; he wanted to occupy as many opponents as he could.

Once the stream of fire was stopped more and more thugs showed up but they seemed to have learned their lesson. Instead of facing the jounin from one direction, they formed a circle around Ryu. He was surrounded by about two dozen men with varied weapons instead of just swords. The jounin spotted a variety of bladed weapons of different sizes and shapes in addition to numerous spear holders and a one with throwing axes. It was going to be tricky to stall any longer. I suppose I should start my clean up now.

Yuri was inches from Kugo in a flash, leaping close to the boy. He narrowed his brows, pointedly speaking in a muted whisper directly to the boy.

"When you kill someone, make it tactical," he lectured, pulling another arrow ready. "Have you taken a life? He's banging around like a damn gong in a blender."

He rushed forward, sliding down a corridor and crossing a corner. As the guard registered his surprise, an arrow found its way into the man's threat, a well marked shot that would render him unable to shout. The man gurgled and toppled forward, as Yuri carried the man awkwardly into a corner. It wasn't a fatal shot, but it would certainly bleed out in time. Couple that with the pain, Yuri thought to himself, you got yourself a one way ticket to Hades.

"You set them down," he stated again in his mic, one more arrow striking a man's leg. He had been aiming for his waist, where an internal injury would cause panic and quick death instead of pure external damage.

"I took an arrow to the knee!" a man shouted, falling to the ground. His days as an adventurer were over.

As he fell, he struck a pile of debris, scuttling pieces of hardened metal and trash across a corridor offshoot. Dust billowed as the resonating sound of banging metal erupted down the hallway. Sound waves reververated through every crevice, vibrations alerting all to the presence of intruders or simple bad luck. He rolled onto his backside and broke the arrowhead off, choosing to leave it in rather than pull it out. Those kinds were most dangerous.

"Damn." Yuri shouted, racing to another corner, readying his bow. "Do as I say. Not as I do."

He was prepared. He could handle a few brutes. Hopefully Kugo could, too.

His heart was already beating, racing towards a finish line that he didn't want to see. He hadn't meant to kill the man but then again he didn't know if he had really hoped to spare him. It didn't help that Yuri had appeared out of nowhere at his side. Kugo had nearly plunged a dagger into the man at his sudden arrival, even though his conscious had retroactively registered the words shared over the radio, that Yuri had always been behind him.

And he wanted to shake the man, grab the man who had healed his wound at the Habesobi estate by the shoulders and shout at him.

Yes, I've taken a life. I just took one! I just took a second! I ended lives with my blades and my fears and I don't want to be here but I won't let that girl die!

But he said nothing and gripped the kunai in his hand harder and felt his pinky dig into the edge of the knife and draw a small prickle of blood from his knuckle. The pain shocked him, steadied his heartbeat and his mind and focused the adrenaline as shadows moved in the doorway. He wanted to say something, but he knew, he remembered from his lessons is tactical ambushes a key role.

Never give up your advantage.

"Just help me!" Kugo hissed a whisper at the man with the bow and arrow and knew that this was how the night would go. He had to continue to charge forward as his surprise came earlier than he had wanted. He would be the infantry and Yuri his archer, a knight with his page, but he felt so plainly inept at the role.

But he charged forward on the steed of his feet and before the blades were done being drawn in the bright room, Kugo slipped past the threshold and bolted towards the closest man.

"It's just a godamn kid!" One man yelled with a ball and chain in his hands. Flanked by two swordsman and a man in a familiar outfit behind them.

"This kid killed -" Kugo didn't hear the name, refused to hear an identity assigned to the big man with the axe, prone in the hallway. He didn't see the wide open room, with a hefty, regal throne in it's center, hugged by torches nor the chiseled, unscathed and powerful face of Warlord Yoshibo. He only saw the open spaces between sheets of leather armor, where the crossbow man who had been speaking found his voice cut short by the gripping pain of a knife straight through to where his esophagus met the stomach.

A gurgle cloaked the axe man's name and the crossbowman's young face contorted in pain, while his weapon moved to point towards Gyousou Kugo's cherubim cheeks.

A hand reached out, the genin's hand, and reached for the body of the crossbow as his enemy forced his fingers to flex, and the lethal catch of a trigger broke out loudly into the ornate room.

It's over. Kugo held his breath, ready and not ready to know what it felt like to die and return to emptiness. The whole audience of warriors seemed to take a moment for the loss of a young life.

But the life was not his. The sound which followed that of the trigger was one that sounded much like a bone breaking in half, splintering uselessly.

Bougyou no Jutsu.

The crossbow mechanisms clicked and reverberated until the string that held the bolt taut snapped and tore, rendering the weapon useless and sent the metal bolt tinkling to the floor.

Everyone stood shocked, not at the death of their best marksman, but at the spectacular feat of a boy defeating fate with the force of his chakra, his will. Behind the man with the crossbow was the quiet body of Habesobi Jun'ko on the floor.

He was so close to her. And he felt the whole room pause at the miraculous act. Until Yoshibo bellowed out in anger as he rose from his throne.

"Don't sit there. Kill the boy!"

His stomach dropped. He had started something and he didn't know how to finish. And with that, the men in the room moved to close the gap between them.

As the hordes started increasing more and more around Ryu he understood Yuri's point of view as how his actions seemed quite reckless. To an audience it seemed like a suicide charge from the jounin but in reality he had everything under control. He wasn't overselling his own ability but he just knew how capable he was.

The horde took a step closer, tightening the circle around Kojirou and so he reacted. The jinchuuriki tapped into the bijuu’s power, turning his own body into an ethereal flame being made of nothing but fire, except for his gauntlet which remained the same.

Projectiles were thrown and blades were slashing at the jinchuuriki but it all just harmlessly passed through his body. Ryu was temporarily untouchable to those thugs since they possessed nothing that was chakra based to harm Ryu in his ethereal state.

Ryu then quickly leaned down to pick up a katana that belonged to a thug that he killed earlier, using his gauntlet he was capable of wielding a weapon. Attacks were striking at Ryu from every direction but it was all pointless. Ryu felt no need to block or dodge so he put all his energy into attacking with the blade.

The jinchuuriki attacked with brutal efficiency, using the katana to aim at the necks of his foes, slicing them open one after the other while occasionally stabbing at their chests. Within seconds the bodies started piling up by the dozens as the flame man dashed from one target to another in quick succession. It was more of a massacre than a battle since all they could manage to do was futile attempts at dodging and blocking as they didn't have the ability to fight back.

The thugs were frightened by how quickly the tides of battle turned against them and those that didn't immediately die started running away. Even the ones that were attempting to douse the fires started running. No one in their right mind wanted to face the fire demon.

Yuri was going to have a long drink after this. And he would demand compensation from Leaf. One of the few joys Yuri had was writing off business expenses. The focus on making sure he received proper compensation meant he had a large sum of funds hidden in his apartment, waiting for a proverbial rainy day. Maybe one day he would buy a house, maybe not. Perhaps he'd invest in the Konoha Library and get a new wing named after him. The Yoshiyuki Wing had a nice ring to it.

Currently, Yuri was having a bad time. He had purposefully voiced his concerns about going in with "bows a blazing," and somehow he still was the irresponsible jounin leaving his ward to go die in a fire somewhere.

Yuri already met his contractual obligations. His job was to heal the sick clansmen, and while he hadn't gotten her to a full recovery, he did enough to quarantine her illness and boost her healing. She would be feeling better than ever in a few days time. All this extra work was basically free labor and Yuri hated, vehemently hated, the idea of working harder for nothing. He wouldn't be expecting compensation, he would be demanding it. And he would ask for a gratuity from the clan.

"This is Yoshiyuki Yuri, reporting for Waste My Time magazine. Your only source for wasting your time and having a bad night. Up next--" he grunted, two more arrows hitting necks and toppling goons over to the ground, "We have a ten year old that just blew up a crossbow, with his mind."

It was a bit of frivolity. Yuri had fun, sometimes. Besides, he was already done with his mission, he could afford to have fun. As long as Kugo survived, well, mostly survived, Yuri would be fine.

"To be fair, Baby-Sama," Yuri laughed, checking the corner for hostiles, "That was a good move. Nobody outside. They might be calling for reinforcements so grab your girlfriend and let's evacuate."

He saw Yoshibo rise from the throne, anger and spittle on his face. He was screaming.

"Go. Now." Yuri shouted, aiming an arrow at the room. The ruler was flanked by two men, the final two not dead or unconscious. Our job isn't him right now. We can come back for him. We need her."

"I'm not ten! I'm thirteen, dammit!" The young boy in the middle of the room cursed, hoping his use of profanity might prove that he was older somehow. He was still fidgety from the encounter with the crossbow. And scanning the room, he was suddenly surprised at how the room was not as full as he had expected. It was now just Yoshibo and his two powerful guardsmen opposite Habesobi Jun'ko and her own two, seemingly less powerful guardsmen.

Yoshibo had risen from the throne now, his powerful frame appearing bigger than his throne, and a hammer as tall as Kugo, and imaginably as heavy too, in his big hands. His two attendants held a pair of hatchets and a large broadsword respectively. Kugo felt a shimmer of fear as Yuri shouted an order at him.

But Kugo looked at Yuri with a conflicted and furrowed brow as he stood in front of the dying crossbowman and the stirring Jun'ko. Yuri may have even confused that look where his mouth smushed up on one side of his face for a weird awkward smile. It was clear that Kugo was thinking about doing something stupid.

"You're a fool to wait, boy!" Yoshibo was closing ground and swung, furiously at Kugo with his hammer. The boy tumbled with the swing, out of range now of Yoshibo and yet, also, out of range of Jun'ko. All eyes were on him as he threw kunai at his closest enemies.

"Now, Kugo!" It was curious, for Kugo to yell out his own name. For a moment, Yoshibo wondered if the slender man with the bow and arrows was Kugo, but even he seemed confused by the shout.

Until, like a strange miracle, Kugo ran out of another doorway. Even though Kugo was right there, staring at Yoshibo and his attendants. Two Kugos?! Wasn't one enough?

This might have been the thoughts of some of the men in the room, but it was not the thought of the second Kugo who had swept Jun'ko up in his arms and ran, disappearing from the room past Yoshibo, Yoshiyuki Yuri, and Gyousou Kugo, into the darkness of the hallway from where they had all came.

His hands formed seals and in an instant, just when he had disappeared from the mountainside, another image of Kugo flickered into existence out of fire. The two shared a quick sign and understood what they would do. They would split up, and meet in the middle, to find some way to save the girl. *
With that, the Kugo left in the room threw another kunai, which was flawlessly deflected by the swing of a hatchet. But that attendant had missed an important detail. A small tag, the seal for explosion written carefully in Kugo's calligraphy.

And there, they saw Kugo's hands in a seal before an explosion ruptured the silence of the caverns. The ceiling shook and rocky dust covered the room.

It was time to go.

The place was starting to get empty as everything that was left was either dead or on fire, until one lone man showed up. The large brute seemed confident and eager to face the jinchuuriki, despite the massacre that was around him and the supernatural form that Ryu was in. The thug approached the jounin, walking over his dead comrades’ bodies as he pulled out a syringe from his pocked. Using the syringe the man injected himself in the shoulder with a red bright liquid that had a sort of glow to it. It definitely wasn’t blood but Ryu couldn’t really tell what it was or what its significance was.

An aura started to form around the brute, much like what normally forms around the jinchuuriki as the bijuu chakra starts to leak. The chakra was intimidating, but Ryu was certain that he was the meaner monster of the two and so he sprinted towards the man, sure of himself being untouchable to those that lacked the ability to mold chakra so he didn’t bother even attempting to dodge the brute’s fist as it flew towards his face. He was a being of fire, and he was certain that the fire would burn his foe but he was dead wrong.

The fist made contact with the ethereal form, knocking the jinchuuriki down. It was more shocking than it was painful. Ryu was left confused and the situation even grabbed Hamza’s attention as it awoke. The man wasn’t too powerful to deal with, but his injection carried something mysterious and it warranted attention.

What the hell is that?” Ryu wondered.

“That chakra is similar to mine, but not quite.” The bijuu finally spoke. “There is no bijuu dwelling inside this man.”

Hamza didn’t really give its hosts any solid answers but that didn’t matter. Ryu had a battle to finish, regardless of what it was that he fought. He got up and reverted back to his normal self, seeing how the untouchable fire form wasn’t quite as untouchable as he hoped it would be. He never imagined the day where a random thug would be able to lay a hand on him in that state.

Rubble rained down in aching, grieving coughs. The ceiling struggled to contain itself, inch by squared inch of materials slipping by, circling to the ground. Another groan. The sound announced a large boulder of rafters and stone landing deftly where the girl had only laid moments before. Yuri smiled. In this devestation and chaos, there were only two things to do in order to secure a mission "win" for these extra objectives: Locate the girl, destroy the warmongers.

This was going to be so simple he almost felt guilt complaining about it earlier. Almost.

He notched a final arrow, fingers gingerly, almost religiously, wrapping the arrow in a tag. You couldn't even call this combat, the men were still far out of reach and Kugo had already slipped past the final three men. Yuri let the arrow fly and leaped backwards, laughing.

Kugo and the girl were already moving but Yuri quickly announced himself to assuage fears and grabbed them both, turning them to face the room where two large men, a larger man, and an exploding arrow were looking at them. They glanced at the arrow directly in front of them, most likely mentally counting how many seconds they have before the eruption.

"This is why you always leave yourself a back door."

Brilliant white heat billowed from the tag, shaking the ground and sending out a concussive blast from the epicenter. Harsh light cast jagged shadows on the three men's tired, worn faces. The singing blast contorted their expressions from anger to doubt to wrath. And then pain. But just as those feeling registered on the men, splitting their skin in little ribbons. The blast was just far enough away that Yuri only felt heat rush over him. Yuri leaned back, falling through the ground with Kugo and his ward.

It was a strange feeling to be devoured by your shadow. And that's what it was, his shadow engulfed them, churning them through his twisted system of utter night. Black, horrific shapes were off in the distance as they traveled, just out of sight, like monsters hiding at the edge of a field. But they want to cross the field. And Yuri could sense them, their wanting, their desire to take him as prey, destroy him, consume him. An almost deafening roar resounded and Yuri could feel every fiber in his body vibrating from the sheer force of the carnal shout. It was close. Dark. Yuri couldn't see. Too dark.

Light. Almost disgusting in contrast, they fell forward, back through Yuri's shadow at the bottom of the mountain, behind their fellow Jounin. From there they could pick up, rendezvous, and leave the way they came without trouble. Off in the distance he could see the rubble collapse more and more, smoke billowing out the top, sides and walls falling to the ground like a well razed demolition. And that's what it was. A demolition. He turned and looked at the girl. Kugo was nowhere to be seen.

A clone. He had fallen back with a clone. Oh, god. He detached a part of his shadow again, leaving it as a memento for Jun'ko, who laid in the grass and shrubs exhausted and afraid. She should be safe here for the time being.

He poured his chakra into his hands, performing several seals. Sweat formed on his brow, little clear pebbles falling from his hairline to his eyebrows. He stepped forward, infiltrating through shadows. One good thing about the building collapsing was that plenty of rubble meant plenty of shadows. From behind a chair Yuri emerged, dark tendrils disappearing down his body like liquid night.

Kugo," Yuri shouted, a large chunk of rubble smashing into his shoulder. He could hear a pop, most likely fracturing his collar. The pain would register later, for now righteous fury was fueling him. "Where are you, you little shit-stain? You always let your teammates know where you really are. If you die I swear to god I'll kill you and your entire family."

There he was. Yuri rushed after him, dodging falling bits and pieces. They have maybe a minute before the entire building would fall in like a dollhouse under a waterfall. He could hear a scream from the room. Moans of pain. They sounded serious.

"I can get us out, but I need a second. So run," he shouted, heavy breathing already ragged. Another bit of rubble, sharp metal, fell down, nicking the back of his calf with an inch deep gash. His blood flowed down his leg, small splatters with every other step.

"Just. Keep. Running."
