Default [Mist] Kuchiyose no Kame: The Turtle Summoning Contracts

The Turtle Summoning Contract

Family Name: Hidden Mist Turtles
Summon Type: Taijutsu
Village: Hidden Mist Village

Home: The Infinite Swamp

The Turtle Family of Mist has resided in The Infinite Swamp long before history was even recorded. The Infinite Swamp is rumored to be located within the Archipelago of Mist on an island that does not appear on any charts or atlases. It is said to be protected by enchantments that precede the Earth itself which serve to shield and cloak the Swamp's true location from those the Turtle Family does not invite into their home. Ships that sail near the island are often beset by an impenetrable fog, one so thick and impermeable that even the mightiest of shinobi techniques cannot pierce or disperse it. Eventually, when the fog inevitably clears, the vessel emerges into open water, miles off their set course. Those fortunate few, however, that have managed to gain favor with the Turtle Family are well aware of how to navigate through this powerful enchantment and make landfall upon the expansive island which houses the Infinite Swamp.

The island itself is divided into two main sections, each housing a specific branch of the family. Along the coast if the island, known to the Turtles as the 'Outer Rim', reside the more intelligible summons, ones who tend to associate with the shinobi summoners of their house. These turtles, while occasionally prone to a rather cranky disposition, all are quite knowledgeable and wise and are capable of communicating with humans rather easily. With the exception of a noted few, they tend to live in clustered huts along the white, sandy coast of their island where they spend their days idly relaxing in the warm sun and crystal clear surf. Shinobi who visit the island are strongly encouraged to stay on this outer rim. After all, few are the humans still alive today who have proceeded inland and ventured beyond the relative safety of the Outer Rim.

Past the gnarled and foreboding tree line encircled by the Outer Rim is the Infinite Swamp itself. The swamp floor is covered in most parts by one to two feet of black, murky water, though in some places the depth suddenly shifts and increases by ten fold. The canopies of the distorted bog trees shroud the area in a near impenetrable darkness, accentuating the haunting atmosphere that seems to permeate through the marsh. Perhaps most terrifying of all, however, is that the Infinite Swamp is home to many monstrosities, some the likes of which the world has never seen. Massive pythons slither undetected through the swampy floor, waiting to pick off unsuspecting prey. Insects the size of house cats skitter up and down tree trunks, while hungry bats eagerly await their chance at seizing their next meal. However, those that are truly unlucky may find themselves face to face with the more estranged members of the Turtle Family, for those that live within the swamp possess a brutality and savagery matched only by their insatiable lust for blood. At the center of this horrific environment, at the very heart of the Infinite Swamp, rests the lair of Tenjyogame. It is from this location that the Lord Turtle watches over all of his kin, savage or not, and only the bravest and most intrepid heroes are able to traverse the dangerous trek to his domain.

Description:

Physical

While most turtles within the wild trudge across the Earth on all fours, the members of the renowned Turtle Family are, for the most part, bipedal creatures. However, even without standing upon their hind legs, members of this family tend to be rather large creatures indeed, with even the average turtle standing at roughly the height of a tall man. For those turtles who reside along the Outer Rim, their skin and shells are mostly a mottled assortment of earthly tones, with browns, yellows, and green being the most prevalent among the family. Occasionally, a particularly beautiful turtle will be born whose shell is marked with brilliant turquoises and deep blues, but these majestic beings are a rarity and are few and far between.

Those Turtles within the Swamp, however, possess a much different appearance than their brethren along the coastline. Whereas the turtles along the Outer Rim have cultured their appearance to appear more refined, the family members residing deep in the heart of the Infinite Swamp have fully embraced their savagery. These turtles tend to traverse the swamp on all fours, using their gargantuan size to easily tear through the dense foliage. Long, sharp talons adorn their hands and feet, and many even possess fangs to help easily capable of tearing flesh from bone. While some may still possess remnants of color upon their bodies, for the most part these beasts tend to sport shells and skin as dull and grey as the achromatic environment they reside in.

As a whole, regardless of whether they reside within the Swamp or along its Outer Rim, members of this family tend to possess an unnaturally long lifespan, with some Turtles claiming to be well over one thousand years of age. Outside of Tenjyogame, it is unknown whether any Turtle has accomplished such a feat but regardless, the average member does tend to live for several hundred years. Their longevity is matched only by their hardiness, as each turtle tends to be rather stocky in stature. It is rare to see a turtle with a lithe or nimble build, as their bodies are built to maximize their brawn and toughness, often at the expense of their agility. However, one would be wise to avoid mentioning this lack of speed to any member of the family, as most summons would use their considerable strength to ensure that such a statement would not end well for any summoner.

Cultural

While each Turtle naturally bears their own persona, a few key personality traits have managed to permeate through the family as a whole. Their significant lifespan has led most turtles to believe that they have lived and experienced most everything the Earth has to offer, and as such members of the family tend to be rather haughty and condescending. Their arrogance is, for the most part, not without justification however, as the turtles usually do possess a veritable treasure trove of wisdom that they have accumulated over the years. They are happy to share this knowledge with any considered to be an honorary member of their family, but be warned; a turtle's instruction will never be confused with an accelerated course.

As has been mentioned, however, there is a dynamic split in the family between those who reside on the Outer Rim and those within the Infinite Swamp, with only a few key individuals capable of bridging that gap. Turtles along the Outer Rim consider their marsh-dwelling kin to be uneducated savages, and often compare them to feral animals or the like. Meanwhile, members of the family who dwell within the swap tend to think of their brethren along the coast as weak and too trusting of outsiders. This underlying tension has led to violent confrontations in the past which has caused a rather large rift to form between the two branches of the Turtle Family. Members along the coast rarely venture into the Infinite Swamp, and likewise, those within the marsh rarely make their way to the ocean. It is a tragic system to have to employ, but it is one that has, for the most part, kept the peace for the past few centuries.

History:

The history of the noble Turtle Family stretches back as far as time itself. In the beginning, there was but a single egg. From this egg hatched Tenjyogame, and though he was but an infant, he already possessed a mystical power seemingly derived from the cosmos itself. For centuries he roamed the Infinite Swamp, alone, doing battle with the monstrous creatures which resided within. He single-handedly waged war against the ancient king of the swamp, vanquishing his mightiest warriors and usurping the title of Lord of the Infinite Swamp.

It is about this time that other turtles in the surrounding ocean began to make landfall upon this protected island. Drawn by Tenjyogame's might, these turtles colonized the island with the Lord's blessing. In time, it was these turtles who were bequeathed the gifts of knowledge and speech by the Lord Turtle himself, becoming the first members of the renowned Turtle Family. For centuries, these turtles lived in harmony along the coast, slowly expanding and growing their family.

However, not all was well within the Turtle Family. Occasionally, beasts would emerge from the Infinite Swamp and attack, terrorizing and killing many turtles they felt were encroaching upon their land. Some members of the family believed they needed to venture into the Swamp and strike back, beseeching the Lord Turtle for the strength to do so. Others, however, felt that this would make them no better than the beasts themselves, and vowed to increase their vigilance. This split in ideologies led to the bitter faction split that still exists within the family today. Some members embraced the savagery within the Infinite Swamp and ventured deep within, vowing to continue growing ever stronger. Others, however, chose to embrace the cosmic gifts bestowed upon them by the Lord Turtle and molding that power to perform increasingly complex and powerful techniques such as the art of water manipulation. Regardless of the method, both factions exhibited great power, and though they quarrel to this day, both have begrudgingly recognized the other's strength.

Having existed in near isolation for much of its history, the Turtle Family does not have many significant relationships with other summon houses. They remain staunchly isolationist, partly due to their clandestine location but also because of their haughty attitude toward other families. While the turtles are wise enough to recognize that every summon serves a purpose, they believe their status as one of the eldest of summon families places them in another echelon entirely.

Important Members:

The World Turtle

Codified in legends found across cultures all across the globe, the World Turtle is said to be the ancestor of the entire Turtle family. It is said that the universe rests upon his shell, and he traverses vast distances outside space and time while hoisting the weight of billions of worlds upon his back. His pace is slow, methodical as he travels through the aether, and for good reason; many calamities have been said to be caused by a single misstep or shift in balance by this almighty deity.

Legend has it that the World Turtle created Earth itself as but a habitat for his offspring, and that he then used this planet as the location to house one, single egg. From that egg emerged Tenjyogame, progenitor of the entire Turtle family and ruler of the Infinite Swamp. It is said that the many enchantment which conceal the Turtle family's home is an ancient charm, older than time itself, placed by the World Turtle to protect his young and that only his children can deem one worthy enough to enter.

Tenjyogame

While the World Turtle may be the father of creation in the eyes of the Turtle Family, Tenjoygame, or the Lord Turtle as he has been known to be called, it the unquestioned patriarch and ruler of the Infinite Swamp. Able to command even the mightiest of beasts within his domain, Tenjyogame rules over his kingdom with absolute authority. Though he rarely speaks, not even the savages within the Infinite Swamp dare question his proclamations, both out of respect and fear of his unearthly might. Rare are the moments when he feels the need to display such power, but in those instances devastation is usually left behind in his wake. The Lord Turtle is not one to be trifled with, and those few who are able to traverse the dangers of the swamp to meet with him are truly a special breed themselves.

Furugame

Whilst the other members of the Turtle Family may squabble and bicker amongst one another, there are two individuals no Turtle ever dares to question. The first is Tenjyogame, the almighty patriarch of the family. The second, however, is a much more unassuming turtle by the name of Furugame. Standing at little over 4 foot tall, Furugame is one of the smallest members of her family. Yet, despite her miniature stature, she holds perhaps the second most prestigious position recognized by her kin. Furugame was chosen by Tenjyogame to serve as the shaman of the family, and as such she acts as the liason between those turtles who dwell on the coast and those who reside deep within the Infinite Swamp. Even the mightiest and most savage of beats bow to her will, for they know that to disrespect her is to disrespect the Lord Turtle himself.

Techniques: Chigatana no Kenbu / Hidden Mist Ninjutsu / Yajuu no Houkou

Summon Path

1 - While sailing, you spot an uncharted island somewhere off in the distance. A strange mist envelops your vessel, and when it clears the island is nowhere to be seen.
2 - You make landfall upon the island housing the Infinite Swamp and are educated on the history of the Turtle Family by Rogame. When you return home, you find that an entire month has passed since you departed. Strange!
3 – Kogame bestows upon you an amulet said to be made from a piece of the World Turtle’s shell itself, marking you an honorary member of the Turtle Family, and granting you their contract.
4 – Jigame finds you and demand a duel. He changes his mind later, but offers you the Turtle Summoning Contract anyway.
5 – Rogame blesses your amulet, allowing you to traverse great distances without ever having to stop for food, water, or rest so long as you wear it.
6 – Kogame shows you how to hold your breath for a lengthy period of time while underwater, up to a maximum of an hour, or three posts during a thread.
7 - During your training, Chuugame introduces himself. After a short lecture he teaches your summons how to use any Taijutsu Specials or Mist Ninjutsu you know provided it is below their own stage.
8 – In order to join them past the Outer Rim, Ikarigame visits you. Like the many sea turtles which live in the ocean surrounding Water Country, she modifies your amulet so you are able to dive comfortably to depths up to 100 meters while wearing it.
9 - The World Turtle's amulet grows in power through a ritual with Ikarigame. Once per thread, it may summon a chakra shield shaped like a turtle's shell which completely protects you from any technique. This action counts against your Kawarimi usages in a thread.
10 - The elusive and giant Satsugame appears after you experience and survive a moment of great peril. She says nothing, but you feel that you may now learn Turtle Sage Mode.
11 - Once per thread, your Turtle summon may withdraw into their shell, blocking any ninjutsu one stage below their summon stage. They may use this ability to protect you as well by intercepting the ninjutsu.
12 - Through training with Chuugame, you become as hearty as the mightiest of tortoises, permanently gaining +1 to your strength and stamina levels while in combat so long as you wear your amulet.
13 - Meditating with your summons unlocks an inner strength, and now your Turtle Summons can make two offensive actions in one post, so long as one of those actions is a Taijutsu technique (Regular or Special)
14 - The mighty Tenjyogame emerges from beneath the sea. His blessing grants you the ability to summon two Turtles into combat, as long as one is below stage 4.
15 - Tenjyogame bestows to you his most sacred gift, a Tamatebako embroidered with the Turtle family crest. Once per character’s lifetime, you may open the box and instantly Shunshin out of any combat in a puff of smoke and arrive instantaneously at the Infinite Swamp.
Summon Path
When entering Sage Mode, the skin of the summoner takes on a rough and wrinkled appearance, as though they have suddenly greatly aged. The face becomes more pointed and the nose wider and upturned. The back hunches over in somewhat of an imitation of a shell, and the limbs seem to grow thicker. The summoner's voice will also become more raspy and dry, and their speech patterns slowed considerably.

Stage I - Kogame

Name: Kogame
Requirements: Stamina 3, Power 2
Description: Just over a century old, Kogame is currently the youngest warrior in the turtle family and stands at just over 3 feet tall. However, make no mistake; this turtle does not use his youth or stature as excuses to shy away from combat. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Scrappy and contentious, Kogame often is the first to dive headlong into fights in an effort to prove that despite his age and size, he's quite the formidable foe. With a rebellious attitude and a strong desire to fight, summoners often find themselves having trouble keeping up with this tenacious turtle.

Stage II - Rogame

Name: Rogame
Requirements: Stamina 6, Strength 6, Reserves 4
Description: Standing at over six feet tall, Rogame is the unquestioned veteran of the turtle family, with some claiming he is even as old as The Infinite Swamp itself. His age reflects in his personality, as he is quite crotchety to those who do not show proper respect to this elder. At his advanced age, every movement and every plan is calculated and deliberate, and summoners will often find themselves frustrated trying to accomplish much with this cranky turtle. However, what Rogame may lack in speed, he more than makes up for with his wealth of experience and knowledge, and those who summon him know that any advice they may receive from this ancient turtle is assuredly sage and sound.

-Heavy Weighs the Crown

Heavy Weighs the Crown
Requirements: Stamina 7, Strength 7, Reserves 6
Restrictions: Cannot be used to negate penalties from Celestial Gates
The first of numerous burdensome techniques, the Crown technique passively reduces Speed levels of the user by 1 to a minimum of 1. This effect is always active for Rogame, and only applies when one enters Sage Mode otherwise. A silver turtle shell the right size for the head of the user materializes and weighs down on their neck and shoulders. When cast off the Crown's Speed reduction is removed, along with any other physical malus that might be affecting the user. This effectively ends the duration on any technique which would otherwise lower the stats of the user. A Sage usage may be consumed to form another Crown if the first is discarded, with the same penalties as normal.

Optional Summoner Swap Slot
Requirements: Reserves 7, Control 7, Strength 6

Stage III - Jigame

Name: Jigame
Requirements: Stamina 9, Strength 9, Reserves 7
Description: Despite residing along the coast, the turtle known as Jigame has accumulated quite the reputation amongst the turtles who live along the Outer Rim. Standing at eight feet tall, this warrior has been characterized as a thug, a brute, and even a bloodthirsty savage. In actuality, Jigame simply sees the majority of his family as simply living life too slow. A turtle who craves action, Jigame often seeks out trouble and relishes in the fights that occur after. In fact, it is not uncommon for Jigame to challenge even his allies to a fight once all the foes have been vanquished. While some summoners may consider him to be too much of a liability, those who enlist his aid know they are getting a formidable warrior who will never back down from a fight.

Bear Any Burden
Requirements: Stamina 10, Strength 10, Power 8
Restrictions: While active, Celestial Gate Level bonuses are negated. This technique cannot negate penalties from Celestial Gates.
2 pairs of thick purple turtle shells, reminiscent of limb armor, appears on the arms and legs of the user. These shells are quite thick and sturdy but hard to move in, lowering all physical levels by 1 to a minimum of 1. The shells themselves each have the material hardness of bone. If an attack from an opponent destroys one of the shells, the user gains 2 levels of a physical stat of their choice for that post (which stacks over the penalty). When all four shells are destroyed the penalty is removed, and the user gains 1 level in all physical stats for 2 posts. Requires a Sage usage to summon the shells.

Optional Summoner Swap Slot
Requirements: Reserves 10, Control 10, Speed 8

Stage IV - Chuugame

Name: Chuugame
Requirements: Stamina 14, Strength 13, Speed 11, Control 10
Description: Chuugame is quite the oddity amongst the rest of his family. Unlike some of the more boisterous turtles who live outside the swamp or the beasts who dwell within, this turtle is a quiet, eloquent warrior. More akin to the devoted samurai than the boorish nature that seems to permeate through the rest of his kin, Chuugame is often the most reasonable turtle that a summoner can bring forth. Capable of blending into the human realm quite seamlessly thanks to his skill in disguise and eloquent and proper speech, Chuugame is a valuable ally for those looking for a partner steeped in both espionage and combat talent.

Restrictions: While active, Celestial Gate Level bonuses are negated
A heavy red turtle shell forms on the front of the user, like a chest plate. This shell drums with a dangerous, heated energy. Every post the shell is worn it strikes the user's chest with a powerful blow equivalent to their own levels of Strength. A portion of the energy of each pulse is transferred to the user's physical attacks, and once the shell is removed or destroyed their next strike hits with an extra 1 Level of Strength, plus 1 more for each post they endured wearing the shell.

Requirements: Reserves 15, Control 15, Power 13, Stamina 14

Stage V - Ikarigame

Name: Ikarigame
Requirements: Stamina 18, Strength 17, Speed 17, Control 14
Description: This stage of the turtle family summoning tree is a pivotal one, for it is at this Stage that the summoner ceases to pull from the turtles who reside along the Outer Rim and instead begins summoning those that dwell deep within the Infinite Swamp. The first of those turtles is Ikarigame. Unlike a majority of her kin, Ikarigame roams about upon all four of her legs, yet still manages to stand nearly twelve feet tall, dwarfing many of her family. She is wild, feral even, and does not communicate in any form other than pure destruction. Summoners wishing to call upon this ally would do best to simply summon her in the direction of their foe and allow her to trash about. Her rampages show no sign of concern for her allies or her surroundings, so it is prudent to stay far away.

Tai Sage Jutsu: Font of Rage
Requirements: Stamina 19, Strength 19, Speed 18, Reserves 16
Restrictions: While active, Celestial Gate Level bonuses are negated
This technique requires the user to harness some of the more raw and unbridled natural energy found within the heart of the Infinite Swamp. Upon activation of this technique, a large fiery tortoise shell made of crimson chakra manifests itself into existence upon the user’s back. While this technique is active the user may, once per post, retreat into the shell and ignore any ninjutsu stage 5 or lower and any taijutsu attack under stage 6. However, the raw chakra used in this technique is difficult to maintain, and thus the user must sacrifice one Sage Chakra Usage per post that this technique is active. In addition, the user must make an offensive taijutsu action a post in order to build the rage necessary to maintain this technique.

Optional Summoner Swap Slot
Requirements: Reserves 19, Control 19, Power 18, Stamina 16

Stage VI - Satsugame

Name: Satsugame
Requirements: Stamina 23, Strength 23, Speed 22, Control 16, Power 15
Description:While Satusgame's younger sister may be a rampaging force of nature, this turtle is far more calculated, far more controlled, but also far, far more brutal. Residing in the very depths of the Infinite Swamp, Satsugame is, at best, a cold-blooded killer who destroys her foes with terrifying efficiency. At worst, she's one of the more depraved members of the Turtle family, actively reveling in the blood she spills. Fortunately, the summon swears loyalty to her family and to those who have earned the right to call her, thereby making her a frightening, but valuable ally indeed. She stands nearly twenty feet tall, and between her imposing size and cruel disposition, makes a formidable foe for any opponent to face.

Tai Sage Jutsu: Massa Confusa
Requirements: Stamina 26, Strength 25, Speed 24, Reserves 19, Control 17
While many cultures view the turtle as a pensive and benevolent creature, alchemists believe that the reptile represents chaos and discord. Perhaps these sages of yore became familiar with techniques such as this one which have their origins based from the depth of the Infinite Swamp itself. Upon activation of this technique, a large tortoise shell made of piercing blue chakra manifests itself into existence upon the user’s back. While this technique is active, any punch or kick the user throws also sends out a deadly slice of water easily capable slicing a man in half and cutting clear through even the thickest of steel. However, the power to maintain such a deadly technique is exhaustive, and thus the user must sacrifice one Sage Chakra Usage per post that this technique is active.

Stage VII - Tenjyogame

Name: Tenjyogame
Requirements: Stamina 32, Strength 30, Speed 28, Reserves 24, Control 22
Description: In many cultures, it is said that the entire universe itself rests upon the back of a massive turtle known only as the 'World Turtle'. While none may possess objective proof of the fact, it has long been said that the towering patriarch of the Turtle Family, Tenjyogame, is in fact a direct descendant of this legendary turtle. The unquestioned elder and ruler over all of The Infinite Swamp, Tenjyogame's massive size is matched only by his awe-inspiring presence and dominant authority. His imposing figure absolutely towers over his realm, standing at a greater height than even the legendary sannin summons at approximately 70 feet tall. As old as time itself, legend states that the patriarch of the Turtle family predates the entire universe, and that Earth was created by the World Turtle as a place to raise his descendant.

Tenjyogame is stoic, pensive, only choosing to speak when he believes his words are truly necessary. There are many powerful allies of the Turtle House who have gone their entire lives without hearing the elder speak. However, though he does not waste words boasting about his might, his power is absolute. Those few that are able to call forth this great force are rewarded with an ally whose experience and knowledge spans eons upon eons, and whose brute strength is capable of leveling anything that stands in his way.

- Stage 7 Tenjyogame Swap: Calamity

Requirements: Power 30, Control 27, Reserves 26, Intelligence 22, Tactics 20
It is said that when the World Turtle, bearer of the universe, so much as shifts his balance, the entire world is plunged into complete darkness. As a descendant of this powerful being, Tenjyogame possesses some of those same destructive capabilities as his mythical ancestor. With one stomp of his mighty foot, the earth begins to tremble, forming a noticeable hill anywhere within his eyesight. One post after that, the earth bursts forth in a 30 meter-wide geyser of superheated water that is capable of obliterating anything that was standing above it. The amount of water is so great that afterwards, the area affected is usually flooded with enough water to supply further Suiton techniques. It a truly terrifying jutsu capable of leveling even the mightiest of structures, and one truly befitting of the Lord of the Infinite Swamp.

Restrictions: While active, Celestial Gate Level bonuses are negated
Harnessing the infinite energy of the almighty World Turtle himself, the user of this technique is blessed with the nearly unfathomable amount of power required to carry the universe upon their shoulders. Upon activation of this technique, a large tortoise shell seemingly reflecting the vast cosmos itself manifests itself into existence upon the user’s back. The user of this technique is granted +5 Tai Levels for the entire duration of this technique. However, harnessing this amount of natural energy is a taxing process, and thus the user must sacrifice one Sage Chakra Usage for each post this technique is active. Once the user is no longer able to sustain sage mode, whether because their chakra reserves are exhausted or they were forced out by an enemy's technique, the weight of the world comes crashing down upon them, rendering them immobile for the rest of the thread.

Optional Summoner Swap Slot
Requirements: Reserves 35, Control 33, Power 31, Stamina 26, Speed 18[/SPOILER]

Credit to Masked_One for doing basically all of this!

I'm not sure why the Stage 2 summon can't be used while you're using gates, I think that's just a left over note for his Sage Art not being usable with gates?

A 15 step summoner path seems kinda huge, too, since a lotta characters don't even reach that many threads total - - sage mode is locked behind nine threads minimum, here.

But if that's both by intention, I like the list otherwise!

When you mentioned it in chat I thought you were referring to the sage techs, and I was all prepared for an impassioned defense of the concept. But then I realized there was that random blurb in Stage Two about the Gates. I wonder how that got there!

I removed that specific reference to the Gates, tried to make the wording more consistent across the sage techs that referred to gates, and tried to make the intention of the restriction more clear. The idea is that some of these techniques mitigate stat penalties or boost stats like the Gates, and I didn't want there to be some kind of obnoxious power-gamey overlap between the two.

But in the spirit of creativity, I've rewritten them so that the sage techniques can be used with the Gates. The penalty for those techniques is just that the Gates physical level boosting won't apply. That way you can still use your Gates but won't break the taijutsu scale with a +10 strength punch.

Aren't 15 step paths standard? I'm just copying from Sand summons, which have 15 steps + step 10 sage mode. Granted the summon path is limiting in that it requires threads to be completed before having access to certain stages, but that's by design. If any of those are issues they can be changed.
