Default Time for Action

Sudao walked quietly next to Genta: Each of their escort missions had been a success, what with Genta and the elders and Sudao with the children. Now, they were to return back to the village for a final trip, to gather the rest of populace that had been left behind and herd them, like cattle to their new, temporary homes. Luckily for Sudao, most of the children had been rather excited as the prospect of leaving their old home behind, though he doubted the elders Genta had taken with him expressed the same sentiment.

He turned his head toward the younger man, sizing him up and down, as if checking for bruises or any other potential wounds. Sudao had changed outfits since the young man had seen him last, and rather than fanciful clothing, wore black, albeit expensive looking athletic attire. The jacket was unzipped partially and showed a rather bright, teal colored tank top underneath. The jewel on the back of his neck shined bright, and now that the parleying was over, Otohime, his avatar, walked freely next to the two men, observing, watching with a coy smile.

“How did your group do?” He offered the chuunin a fake smile, though it seemed genuine as ever. “The kids were bratty, like I expected. We took a lot, and I mean a lot, of breaks. I’m just glad the worst groups are over and Iwagakure finally sent some help. We’ll take the last of them together, it’ll be easier that way.”

The two walked over a hill, and the sight that befell them caused Sudao’s mouth to open in shock. Fire erupted from the village, and he could hear the screams of the remaining inhabitants. He reached a hand to his ear, speaking into his communication unit.

“This is Aoyama Sudao. Report.”

No answer.

“Report!”

Genta hated old people.

They never knew when to shut up, in fact they felt like they needed to talk, they needed to be understood. Their opinion was the only thing that mattered. For the most part his escort mission was a test in patience. It was something that he tried to take in stride but when a creature you have to move from one place to another sleeps less than you and tries to use you as a comment box...well, in short, the chuunin had no fun. At all.

“I never want to grow old, just...just kill me when I get some wrinkles.” He sighed as he followed along Sudao, unable to make a quality response. His smile was not there for a few moments, it was hard trying to think back to those old fogies. “Yeah, I’m not gonna bash them, they’ve lived longer than me and stuff but...nope. Never growing old. You can do that Sudao.”

With a heavy sigh he continued his trek. The chuunin no longer in his Konkaji armor but instead, in his lighter more free flowing shinobi wear. His mouth piece was draped around his neck to make sure Sudao saw all his subtle facial expressions, which really were not subtle at all. “Next time we end up doing this I’ll take the kids, they seem to like me more than you!” He let out a hearty chuckle and looked up, trying to stay positive, until he saw the flames in the sky.

“What…”

He knew where it was located. All the implications were there “Sudao.” he started to run, hoping the Jounin could keep up. “We already know what’s happening. Let’s go.” With a few handsigns his hammer appeared in his right hand. Clenched. Genta ran towards the danger knowing what awaited him. He really did not want to fight but that was the problem with bandits.

They didn’t care.

Sudao did not run.

Instead, he rushed through a series of hand seals, knowing better to waste precious time. He fell into the earth just as a brilliant blue gleam erupted around him, coating his limbs in sapphire like hues. A blue circlet crossed over his forehead, sending straight, carefully crafted lines down past his eyes like tears before moving to frame his jawline. All from the back of his neck, designs emerged, fit for a noble, and Otohime’s voice filled his head, clear as ever.

Kill them first, worry about survivors later.

These people are civilians, Otohime, their safety comes first, think of the children back in Iwagakure–

–They’ll make fine genin; their lives are squander here. Kill every last enemy. Bring pride to us.

When he rose from the ground, he did so quietly, in the town hall where he had conducted his meetings with the elders before. The long table and chairs were missing, instead piled against the door. Several men and women braced against it, terrified, and within minutes, Sudao could smell the flames from outside. A couple screamed at the sight of him, brandishing pitchforks and old swords, but one woman spoke up.

“Wait, it’s the shinobi, the one from before!”

Sudao nodded.

“I’d ask for an explanation, but there’s no time. Is this everyone, or…?”

There were still screams coming from outside. A few people winced, but Sudao’s blank expression came back, calm as ever. He could hear the fire burning the building from the outside, feel heat radiating in. Soon, the walls would give way. He had to get the people out of there.

With a deep breath, he took a step forward, flickering on his communication unit as he gestured for the civilians to get out of his way.

“Stand clear. Genta, do you read me? I’m in the town hall, where we were before. Can you affirm that there are no civilians directly outside of it?”

Genta lacked the ability to move around as well as Sudao, but what he lacked in utility he made up for in the ability to run. Faster than Sudao? Doubtful but it was a strong sprint towards the village. The chuunin had to pause for a second to get a quick look around, buildings were on fire, ash was starting to rise and get thick, a large plume hung over them and slowly darkened the sky. Shaking his head he listened to Sudao through the communication unit.

“Yeah yeah.” he paused a second and moved towards the building quickly. “No one seems outside of it.” the building was on fire. “I know you got that I’m gonna continue to search.” he turned away and started to form handseals, generating his helmet that he preferred, the bright green would catch people’s attention, it seemed a bit more brighter this time around though.

Gotta make sure everyone is okay, no children should be here-

A scream was heard from behind him. A quick turn as he saw a woman, likely in her twenties or early thirties on the ground, trying to crawl away. Above her was a man ragged clothing, axe in hand and a look on his face that screamed ‘guilty’. Genta began to run towards them to intervene, make sure nothing bad was going to happen to the woman. That was when man number two stepped in, quickly piercing through the lady with a spear like object.

“No...no no no...Sudao. Hostiles.” he spoke quickly as he was charged down by the men, the one with the sword swinging at him horizontally. It was hard to tell if the man was trained properly but he definitely knew how to hold onto the blade. Genta had thing that he wanted to do but he could not see the status of the woman. Quickly holding onto his hammer, and pulling it behind his back, he swung it from his back and brought it down to the ground, deflecting the sword swing and even causing it to snap in half as they collided.

This isn’t hopeless like the earthquake. I can help everyone.

“The building is about to come down – our priority is getting the ones locked inside some place safe and rounding up the others who didn’t make it in time.”

Sudao spoke with an eerie calm into his communication unit, though by this point, the tone had become customary for him. He felt the eyes of those who had barricaded themselves in the town hall lock onto him, their false sense of security betrayed as the shinobi weaved through a number of hand seals. As he finished the final seal, he canted his head back toward them.

“Ready yourselves. You’ll have but a minute before this place comes down.”

The men and women traded hushed whispers and then nodded as a great dragon of earth erupted from the paneled floor, splintering the structure further as it smashed through the barricaded doors and furniture used in creating the blockage, letting out a great roar. The men and women fled out either side of it, coagulating in one big group in a kind of square, the men on the outside.

Sudao’s attack did not simply stop at the door, however. The dragon, with its terrible teeth, dove towards Genta, plucking either man attacking him up in its jaws with the terrible crunch of bone echoing across the village as it shot skyward. And then, the structure exploded, raining down a precipitation of blood and dust to the screams of the two shinobi’s wards.

“Get moving!”

Sudao reasoned that such a technique would do one of two things: Draw out the rest of the raiders, or spook the less hardy into fleeing. He would have preferred the latter, given that his current goal was to minimize damage to the village, but the shouts and roars of disdain told him that the raiders had other plans. Two groups came to face the shinobi, a good number boxing the group in from the north and south.

His gaze shifted toward Genta.

“On your mark."

Genta would typically be in awe at the spectacle, a dragon made of stone moving past him and assisting him, almost like a comic book or one of those cheesy movies. For a second he did smile at the assistance of his new stone dragon friend until blood splotted his clean clothes. Genta shuddered as he quickly grabbed his hammer and went in for another swing but stopped as the man with the spear was running backwards. The chuunin was confused as to why until he began to hear the yells and roars approaching.

“Yeah, fighting in numbers makes sense…” After a quick step forward he noticed the men approaching, he could not tell their affiliation so easily but knew that they were going to try to do as much harm as possible. “Sudao-kun...sama...chan...whatever. I’m bad with crowds.” Which was true, not a fear of dealing with multiple people but he lacked a repertoire when it came to multi-combatant conflict. A pat on his own chest and a self nod and he grinned and slammed his hammer down infront of him, a loud thud was heard as he took a quick jaunt forward and swung his hammer infront of the crowd as if he was putting on a show-and he was. The hammer was cold, then warm, then hot as it began to sparkle and those sparks became more frequent and much more bright.

“You could say things are heating up!” He made sure he spoke clearly through the communication unit so Sudao could hear him. The men that were charging had to stop as their vision was interfered. Some decided to keep charging with their eyes closed while others stayed in the back, blinking profusely. “Let ‘em have it!”

“Genta – target the north first!”

The men and women that Sudao had rescued from the town hall cowered nearby, the more brazen of the bunch clutching cutlery, pitchforks and whatever other makeshift weapons that they could find. Still, regardless of their armaments, the fact still remained that the villagers were entrapped, what with debris to their east, another series of burning buildings to their west, and a group of mercenaries annexing them from the north and the south. The raiders, those that had rallied, anyhow, were about ten in number and could break through the civilians’ formation with ease if the two shinobi guarding them lost focus.

Refusing to let that happen, Sudao pivoted on his heel, spinning around as he whipped through hand signs just before slamming his right foot into the ground. The soil cracked as the rock underneath dented and bent, chakra racing underground to create blue veins of jewel that would ultimately encircled the shinobis’ charges. After a small delay, the sapphire-like ring glowed a bright turquoise as long, octopi-like tendrils of water shot forth from it, whipping around dangerously at any mercenary that dared to get too close. They were capable of deflecting projectiles, but more importantly, could break the bones of anyone that Sudao decided was a threat.

“You’ll all be safe until we’re done – Genta! Ready?”

The aristocrat flashed him a smile before turning northward. There didn’t seem to be any true happiness behind the jounin’s grin, but rather, an unnerving sense of bloodlust, one sponsored by the sentient entity that pulsated on the back of his neck.

Touching the jewel, he coaxed it, allowing it to flash a similar turquoise like the ring did while he pulled a long rapier from it, twirling it in his left hand before adopting a pose like that of a fencer. He jutted the sharpened steel out dangerously and with a rather hellish grin, dived straight for the group that he had selected, skewering one of those blinded by the chuunin right through the eye.

As the water gathered and targeted the group of bad guys, Genta grabbed on to his hammer tightly. Sudao was doing a remarkable job of cleaning things up and taking care of the enemies but Genta could not keep up. He was sure other shinobi would be able to work in tandem with the technique being used in front of him but Genta either lacked the coordination or the ability to do such things. Instead of using some technique that would create a gorgeous symphony of water and steel he decided to do something a bit more basic.

As one of the men began to cower and run away from aquatic attack, Genta used his hammer and swung it right into him. He twitched slightly as he heard the audible cracking of bone, the sound of clothes slightly catching flame and the burning of flesh. He then saw the man get flung into the maelstrom with the other men. The chuunin decided it would be better not to watch as his target collided into another person, not because he was scared of the violence but because he knew he could not be distracted, this was not the time to be amazed or fascinated.

“The south…” he looked behind him as he saw the group from behind approaching. “Sudao, I’m gonna head over there and try to slow them down.” It was not an attempt to be a sacrifice; the young man liked being alive. But he knew that he could at least hold them up and position them to group up, maybe the diplomat could be able to do something with them. “This better not backfire.” the Konkaji nodded as he started to dash in the opposite direction, grunting softly as he carried his weapon with both hands and kept it on his right side. He saw the townspeople grouped up, some looking more nervous and fidgeting. “Don’t scatter or try to run please!” He yelled out. “Please trust in us!” He gave the most reassuring thumbs up and person could give, and who was more reassuring than Genta?

Another flourish of his sword brought another thug’s life to a quick end, cutting cleanly through the man’s braided beard as he parried his axe. A swift kick to the groin and a lunge ended his life, though Sudao had little time to recover before he was beset on. The men he faced lacked the tactical training to back up their physical prowess: While they were strong, they failed to grasp the more important aspects of combat. A hit didn’t always mean a kill, which became evident as Sudao looked for a way out. Seizing an opportunity, he braced himself, choosing to take a hit from a tetsubo in order to reposition himself. The impact flung him to his left, allowing him to jab at anyone who might have kept him from breaking out of the ring of men surrounding him.

He kept up the momentum, eventually sliding to a halt a few yards away. He cast a glance towards the villagers – they were still safely within the confines of the ring he had placed around them, and the tentacles had already flattened one transgressor – a barbarian laid, beaten and bloody at their feet.

Genta’s decision to split off from him, in Sudao’s eyes, was a bad tactical move. Being outnumbered, the best thing for the two of them to do would have been to remain close to one another, allowing them to assume a tight defensive position. The two had superior agility compared to the raiders which would allow them to make an escape if they needed to, but their primary goal was to protect their charges. To do that, they needed to make a stand together, and given the narrowness of the street, Sudao couldn’t exactly create another explosion without risking unnecessary casualties.

Weighing his options, he instead chose to focus on the men that had begun to run off him. Another lunge, another gush of blood, another life. His life depending on not being overrun.
