Tatsuo managed to circle the area while Ryu kept the hunter busy. It was easy enough for the chuunin to go around undetected given how distracting Ryu was to the hunter and the terrain provided enough cover to hide any obvious and blatant movements. It also helped that Taka seemed to be very concerned with the leaf jounin’s presence, making him completely oblivious to the chuunin taking aim behind him.

The two daggers thrown by the chuunin did an exemplary job. The first one took all of the hunter’s attention thus allowing the second one to knock away the device from his hand. Those two distractions together gave the bijuuko an ample opportunity to strike once more just as it did when Ryu distracted the man.

The feline chakra creature leapt onto its hunter, knocking on the ground and it started slashing at him, scratching and tearing bits of flesh but Taka managed to get loose before long. He kicked the beast away, sending it flying a few feet back. Ryu considered what they have done was enough to make the fight easier to take down both targets. Taka was already bleeding a little and slightly bruised while the bijuuko had already taken several heavy hits. It was time for the leaf team to clean up.

Take him alive.” Ryu cooly commanded as he charged towards the beast.

He had assumed that Tatsuo was capable enough to capture Taka or at least capable of keeping him busy just long enough. Ryu wanted to handle the chakra creature first, as it was part of their objective and mostly because it was definitely going to interfere with whatever they would try to do. It was a wild creature and it was going to attack the closest thing it deemed a threat; and shinobi were definitely a threat.

The jinchuuriki then using his armored hand quickly grabbed the bijuuko from the neck just as it was recovering from the kick it received. He pressed the beast against the ground with enough force that it was forced into a crouching position. The beast tried to resist by clawing and scratching at Ryu’s hand, but the gauntlet was too strong and he didn’t feel any of it; he used his armored hand for that very reason. The swordsman then he grabbed his cleaver with his free hand. With all the jounin’s might, he struck the cleaver’s sharp edge into the chakra beast’s head, causing to dissipate and whither into nothingness.

Take him alive.

Tatsuo had already rolled twice more and broke cover at a sprint, eager to use his own opening and Taka’s confusion in his whereabouts to his absolute advantage. He unclipped his shield with his right hand and donned it with his left in a fluid motion, then lowered his profile until he flew over the ground at the fringes of any normal line of sight. He dove through the gap between hunter and bijuuko at nearly the same time that Ryu rushed in, bringing up his shield like a battering ram on the end of an uppercut. Impact! But it was Tatsuo who was flying, his shield slipping over Taka’s arm as if it was covered with oil and carrying the ballistic Chuunin with it.

The element of surprise had been lost. Perhaps the moment Ryu had spoken, or Tatsuo’s kunai thrown. It didn’t matter how, but what to do now. Tatsuo rode the flip, scrunching up his legs behind the shield and rolling over Taka’s head, twisting until the rear lip the his shield crested whatever the hunter had used to deflect and he could look back over his shoulder. Another shield! Except this was more like armour: a segmented wall of small metal slats that had folded out of somewhere along the man’s arm. Unreal design. Totally annoying. Especially with Taka’s own fist rising in the motion like a grounded uppercut.

The two shields disengaged at the top. Tatsuo felt the jarring sensation of friction’s release, saw the blunted tips of Taka’s gloved knuckles. Instead of tumbling into the nearby sapling, which is what he was bound to do, Tatsuo snatched at the raised fist with his free hand, planting it about the man's wrist, and pulling his opponent back out of his firm stance while engaging his entire body to rotate sharply. His shield came full circle and he thrust it down, to Taka’s first clear expression of bewilderment, down, down, right into the unprotected underside of the man’s arm.

Tatsuo landed at a kneel, Taka on his back, head vulnerable to a quick shield bash. But no, the man’s free hand wasn’t making it easy for Tatsuo and pushed back against the heavy disc as his body squirmed.

“Yield!” Tatsuo demanded, trying to spread his arms against Taka’s urge to push them closed. He was younger, likely weaker, but in a position of greater situational strength considering the blow he’d already dealt. It was a stalemate for the moment, but given another couple seconds, Taka would likely pull some trick or Jutsu out of the bag. Tatsuo only had the slimmest of openings in terms of timing and the eight or nine inches of clearance he'd already fought for.

Good enough!

Using the tension of their stalemate to create two fixed points in equilibrium, Tatsuo picked up his knees and swung both feet into Taka’s jaw, which gave with a pop and sent him sprawling, all fight leaving his arms.

The skirmish had been shorter than Tatsuo had expected from an experienced monster hunter and rogue shinobi, but there was no denying the reality that Ryu and he had taken advantage of a known situation, intervening in ways that could not have been accounted for. He released Taka’s wrist and turned in his renewed crouch to check on the state of the bijuuko, the area having grown silent.

The beast was nowhere to be seen.

"Wait. What happened?"

The encounter got wrapped up much faster than Ryu had anticipated, which was a very good thing. It was also a testament to how effective the two Leaf shinobi were. Tatsuo managed to knock Taka out soon after Ryu destroyed the Bijuuko and due to being distracted by his own target the chuunin didn’t even realize that his partner had already cleaned up his part.

Destroying them is much easier than capturing them.” He noted.

The Jounin then turned to their downed target and pulled out some wires from his pouch. He didn’t have many tools that could have been used for trapping or tying up so the wires had to do. Breaking them with brute force wasn’t impossible, but it was at least going to be difficult and painful to the missing nin’s hands. He wasn’t going to be left unsupervised anyway, so it was only a tool to slow him down.

Good job knocking him out.” He commended Tatsuo on his efficiency.

Ryu then proceeded to tie up Taka’s hands together then moved onto his feet and did the same. Then he flipped the rogue onto his back once more. There wasn’t anything left to do other than to wait for Taka to wake up and try to extract some information out of him. The Jounin wasn’t an experienced interrogator by any means but he was resourceful enough to have a few ideas on how to encourage people on volunteering information.

If it’s not really serious he should wake up in a bit, right?” Ryu wondered. “Can we speed up the process somehow?

They weren't in a rush anymore but Ryu didn't fancy just waiting around for Taka to wake up so he was open for suggestions, hoping that Tatsuo had some useful input.

Tatsuo stood back in the stillness, arms crossed against a chill breeze, as Ryu went about his work. He took the compliment that was offered but couldn’t help the twinge of regret that came from the result of his own ruthlessness. Taka was out cold. Worse, he’d probably dislocated the man’s jaw. Their newest mark wasn’t going to be much use to them in that state, unconscious or otherwise. So when Ryu asked him to do something about it, Tatsuo jumped at the chance to remedy the situation.

First the jaw. Taka was safely bound so the Chuunin knelt down next to the hunter’s head to inspect his handiwork. It was a clean dislocation, not a break. He noted the gaping malocclusion, or slack jaw, the way it lolled to one side.

“Shouldn’t be…too serious,” he said, shuffling tentatively around on his knees to the opposite side of the man’s head and placing his hip there so he could position the fingers of his left hand next to the loose mandible. “I learned this basic field medicine stuff for the war but never had to use it. And when you can inflict injury, it does help knowing how to contain the damage. Doesn’t mean it’s not gross, though!”

With a nervous chuckle, he slipped his free hand into Taka’s mouth but made clear with his expression that he wasn’t a fan of the procedure, not least for the smell he’d discovered emanating from between the grizzled tracker’s slick, toothy gums. What was that? Curried beef and toenails? And this was Tatsuo’s bare hand! But did he deserve it? All but certainly. Next time he wanted to take the hard line when he didn’t actually need to, he’d remind himself of this very moment. His fingers found the other side of the bone by the molars and he began to press down on the mandible, guiding it round. Maybe the pain would wake the bijuu tracker, maybe it wouldn’t. Tatsuo’s nightmares were all but guaranteed.

The Chuunin struggled for a moment, unable to find the socket, panicking briefly that he was somehow doing this wrong and maybe worsening the condition. He wasn’t a medic, and this was just about the limits of his abilities in the field. At least he didn’t have to worry about Taka deciding to take a bite. He looked over his unwitting patient but saw no signs of tension in the man’s body. Didn’t mean they weren’t there and the tracker wasn’t simply biding time, but thinking like that was not conducive to finishing up quickly. The man’s gums were slippery, but Tatsuo’s thumb and fingertips were exerting enough pressure now that the surface had seemingly lost its initial texture. All bile-inducing sensations of disgust were forgotten. There was only the task — that arduous, time-dilating, stubborn, sort of…intangible— oh!

Taka’s jaw popped back into place and Tatsuo immediately withdrew his hand, sitting back in the grass and wiping his thumb and fingers against the material of his trousers.

He waited a few seconds. When nothing happened, Tatsuo fought the urge to turn to his Jounin superior for help because the onus was still on him to fix his little problem. So he raised a hand to indicate he was on the job and shuffled back onto his knees to contemplate what else could still be done. Ryu had mentioned speeding up the process.

“Huh.”

He didn’t have any smelling salts on him. Those would work, of course. Or a blade or two of grass set alight. Maybe. Guaranteed to burn but not to stink. He pulled a small fistful from the ground and looked up to Ryu, gesturing with the stalks.

“I think—“ he began, but caught a whiff of something else a little too close to his face. The grass fluttered to the ground, unused.

“Yeah, I can probably wake him up.”

Smiling grimly, he waved his objectionable fingers under Taka’s nose instead.

“Come on, big man. That’s enough beauty sleep. Only fair you get the same treatment.”

Ryu simply stood back and watched as Tatsuo went around and did his thing. He seemed to know what he was doing, or he was just full of unwarranted confidence. Thankfully it turned out to be the former as it was evident by the man’s jaw being properly relocated in its place and the man waking up thanks to the smell of Tatsuo's fingers, apparently. The Jounin was mildly impressed and a little disgusted, but he showed no sign of either emotion as he stood there with his arms crossed.

Once Taka was awake it was the Jounin’s turn to take the lead and act. So he stepped forward and squatted deep enough to be at eye level with the demon hunter. Ryu really wasn’t an expert interrogator and he had no clue where to start his questioning as there was a whole lot he wanted to know, but all he knew was that he wanted an end to it all.

So who are you working for?

There was no response whatsoever from the missing nin, but Ryu was still giving him one more chance at a peaceful resolution.

Where are you taking the Bijuu you capture?

There still was no reaction so Ryu pulled out a kunai from his side pouch and that finally garnered a reaction from Taka. He scoffed at the thought of being threatened with the small blade but Ryu didn’t mind him. He flipped it into a reverse grip and then then hammered it into Taka’s thigh, which resulted in a slight groan from the missing nin.

“Careful not to hurt yourself with that.” Taka mocked, acting unfazed but Ryu paid no attention to that tactic and proceeded with his own. He charged the kunai with some chakra and then Taka’s entire body erupted in flames. The man was on fire and he started squirming wildly as he screamed. Deep on the inside Ryu was a little uncomfortable with that process, but he slept better at night telling himself that he tried the less violent approach first.

The Jounin let the entire thing go for just a few seconds and then waved his armored hand across the man as it vacuumed the flames from the man’s body, gathering it all into a ball of fire at his palm. Taka was shivering from the experience. It didn’t go on long enough to cause any significant damage, which was exactly Ryu’s intention. He didn’t want to fry the man’s pain receptors just yet.

Are you going to tell us where you’re taking the bijuu?” Ryu coldly asked once more. “The alternative is that you get to experience literal hell over and over again until you snap.

Tatsuo blinked. He wasn’t squeamish. The fingers he wiped against his trouser leg were a testament to that. He wasn’t bloodthirsty, though. And as he eyed up Ryu’s hunched form, all gleaming intent behind a passive, bearded stare, he wondered if the same could be said for the Jounin.

Taka spluttered a ragged curse, then spat pitifully at Ryu’s face. Tatsuo almost felt sorry for their prisoner — he’d really been put through the ringer today — but he followed his superior’s lead, masking his emotions with a stony face and quashing his meta-thinking until such a time when he could figure out the point at which interrogation by flaming torment had become par for the course. And where that expression had even come from. Course…what course?

“Remember,” he added, heaping misery onto injury “I only fixed your jaw so you could talk to us. But if you’re still not in the mood for that, I’d be happy to unfix it.”

Bad cop, bad cop — that’s how he was playing it. Taka fell back against the grass, heaving sporadically as if wrestling an inner demon before forming fists and thumping the ground. He screeched. It was the sound of his pride breaking.

“Fine!”

He sagged as the fight finally left him.

“Fine. Your way. Just…get that thing out of my leg and I’ll…talk.”

His stormy eyes screamed vengeance and bloody murder, but the lack of tension in his body indicated that wouldn’t be happening any time soon. It was strange. This was a bonafide missing-nin, but he'd been felled by a Chuunin and was now answering to one too. Too out of practice against humans, perhaps. The warrior circled the fallen hunter to limit his range of motion. 'Out of practice' served Tatsuo just fine. Now that he knew he could take him, he wasn't afraid of getting too close. Taka gasped quietly as the dagger slid out, and levered himself onto an elbow for support. He was still quivering lightly but taking measured breaths to counter the pain. Wary of every moment that could lead to their prisoner’s recovery, and also of Ryu’s silence, Tatsuo dropped to a squat.

“Your answers, or the blade goes back in.”

That one was a little too dark. But it did the trick. Without looking his way, Taka spoke into the ground.

“Better I show you. And that we leave this place. Too exposed.”

Tatsuo frowned at this, glancing at Ryu.

“Are you expecting company?”

At this, Taka frowned, first peering quizzically over his shoulder at the teenager, then Ryu.

"You let all your underlings do the talking?"

You're just not worth wasting my breath on you.” Ryu replied to the missing nin before realizing that he may have just insulted his teammate too with that comment.

Taka then got up with a little bit of help from the Jounin but he winced in pain thanks to the injury Ryu caused but then he managed to walk well enough without being hindered much.

“There's a cave just a few kilometers to the east of here.” Taka stated as he started walking towards that direction.

Wait.” Ryu commanded. “That device you held against the bijuuko. What is it?

“It's an entrapment tool. “ He replied without revealing much information.

Let's pick it up first. I might want to test it out.” It was a relatively subtle threat.

The group then headed to where the device was dropped and Ryu picked it up. The three of them then headed east into a forest until they reached an area that seemed to be too thick with trees to be traversed through. However Taka walked right through a thick tree branch and into a vast, area that lead to a big cave.

Neat trick.

“This is where our exchanges happen.” Taka informed them as he continued to walk towards the cave. “I don't know what happens beyond this place.”

The group then approached the cave’s entrance and they were spotted by an older man, but he looked very fit in his martial arts sensei garb, despite the long gray hair. The man eyed Taka and Ryu roughly read the words he had mouth to be. “You snake.”

The man then performed a couple of seals and a bolt of lightning came from the sky, hitting Taka and practically frying him. Then with a puff of smoke the older man was simply gone while their only source of information was very much dead.

What just happened?

There was so much new information vying for real estate in Tatsuo’s head, he couldn’t quite decide how to process it all. He stood, slack jawed, waiting for one thing to push its way to the fore, but there was a lot to elbow through.

Lightning bolt, singed hands, the thing—entrance—tree branch-I-don’t-know-what-we-just-came-through, my hands, goshtheyhurt, and that…lightning. Just, what...the hell?

He wrung his hands and buried his fingers in his armpits. He’d been holding Taka by the shoulder.

“Damn. Damn-damn-damn!”

He’d also been looking directly at him.

“I…I don’t…” he started, blinking through a pillar white ink blots.

Taka’s blackened body didn’t even twitch. It just, kind of, smoked. It smelled like—

“Orm—”

Tatsuo backed away, quashing a burst of nausea.

“Sorry.”

He’d seen his fair share of gruesome ways to go, but this was new, and he most certainly didn’t like it. Not one bit. At that moment, something which the late bijuu hunter had said came back to him, shoving its way through the mental melee.

Too exposed.

“You want me to take point up ahead?”

It was more a suggestion than a question. Tatsuo also noticed he'd dropped the honorific 'sir' a little while ago. It had been holding him back from speaking his mind, to which Ryu didn't seem to object. Fist hadn't either.

Coughing into the back of his hand, Tatsuo circled the corpse. It felt disrespectful to the dead, moving on so quickly, but there was nothing to be done here. And the cave looked like it was… Well, ‘inviting’ wasn’t the right word. ‘Safe’ wasn’t accurate either. ‘Anywhere but here’ seemed to fit the bill. He jogged the rest of the way to the mouth, checking for signs of an aggressor, then sidled up to the edge of the rock doorway.

“Doors and corners,” he muttered, remembering his training. And big white blotches. His vision still wasn’t one hundred percent, but he angled his head to compensate for the temporary impairment, looking like some kind of twitchy bird, no doubt. Whatever got the job done. Then he slipped inside, one hand to his sword hilt, the other in a diagonal guard across his upper body.

Someone had left the lights on: caged lanterns, to be precise — one to every table, which snaked through the crystal-ceilinged cavern, every surface just covered with…junk. Of all kinds. There were battered swords in worse-off scabbards, old dinged-up, radio-looking-transmitter-thingies, hanging nets, a row of hooks for bolas, rolls upon rolls of parchment. No shields. Tatsuo didn’t know why he smiled at that when he didn’t know what Ryu was actually looking for, but smile he did.

“So, exchanges.”

He wheeled around, gripping his hands into fists where the electric current had numbed the tips of his fingers, and massaging his palms with his thumbs. Fortunately, Ryu was no longer hidden behind a column of polka dots.

“Where does that leave us?”

Ryu didn’t even realize it but it seemed that Tatsuo was actually in contact with Taka when he was hit. It caused the chuunin to get slightly singed by the bolt, but he thankfully seemed relatively fine overall. Luckily the bolt’s current didn’t carry over to the nearest person as it would have been potentially deadly for the young man too.

The chuunin then went ahead to explore and made sure that the base was safe while Ryu followed closely behind him for extra security. As the two of them made their way across the cavern Ryu kept his eyes sharp, observing the clutter scattered all over the place. It left like some sort of warehouse but most of the items in the clutter weren’t even mildly interesting and held no significance for the Jounin. He was looking for some sort of lead and wasn’t going to leave without one.

The Jounin then spotted a mini wooden structure with a closed door. He walked up to it and turned the knob, but it was locked, but it was a very simple matter. He just took half a step backwards and raised his knee into the door, smashing it open, revealing the valuable objects he was there to find. That section was quite different from the rest as it contained a cleaner and more organized inventory. It also contained some scrolls. Lots and lots of scrolls.

The Jounin walked through and immediately started rummaging through the papers, trying to categorize them. Some were mission related, some were potentially useful or interesting while others were just a waste of space. As he examined the contents he saw one scroll titled as mystical beasts, so he pocketed it. A few papers later he saw one that was labeled ‘Raiton’, which was what the old man had used earlier. He kept that one too as it was definitely something he was interested in, but the rest weren’t particularly interesting.

The Jounin then turned to face the other side only to find a fancy wooden container. He opened it only to find a couple of syringes that contained what seemed to be the same injection that he had previously encountered. The bottled bijuu chakra injections, and they were addressed to Kenichi Shinoda.

We find out who this Kenichi Shinoda person is.
