Default Pay Day

Taichi sat at a cafe, burning through cigarettes and sipping on black coffee from a plain white mug with a crew mate of his giving him company. They waiting for their third partner in crime to arrive. Taichi decided to show up a little early to keep an eye on the museum they were about to rob. The big guy didn't mind the wait but it was Yoi that was getting impatient, as expected. Moko still wasn't late but the girl was a hasty one.

"Why are we waiting for him again? We don't need him." She asked with some apparent anger.

Taichi wasn't going to listen to her suggestion. He was a man of his word and valued work ethics. It was a good thing that he was the one in charge and not Yoi. Despite having shinobi training, she was in some ways reckless and unstable but Taichi trusted her not to disobey a direct order.

"I don't know how serious you are about this, but no." He immediately shot down the suggestion. "He brought the job to me and so he gets half the reward."

While Taro was going to get half the reward, he wasn't going to have nearly as much spending money left over as Moko. After all he planned on giving Yoi a small portion in addition to expenses and smaller payments for the other crew members. Taichi was a generous person. Despite his love of gaining money, he never had a problem against spreading the joy with it. He enjoyed living in luxury when possible and it was always shared it with those around him.

Once shit hits the fan, you blend in with the crowd. Act like a headless chicken, because they will too. Once the tourists start leaving, you make your way to the ship.” Taichi felt the need to repeat the instructions. The last thing he wanted was for Yoi to improvise.

I know I know…” She whined back.

Moko needed to play the part today. Not just of someone going into a fancy museum during an important meeting of all the villages, but also of someone that hoped to get paid today. He had on a nice loose outfit that he had spilled too much money on a lifetime ago. Blue and gold, distinguished colors that went with his disguised appearance. With the mask technique he was able to give himself the face of an older man, at least in his 40s, who was worth giving a wide berth. His hair starting to gray, his face had slight wrinkles at the corners of his eyes, but otherwise he was just handsome. It was a look that made Moko smile at himself in the mirror that morning.

He made it to their rendezvous point, a little cafe that was making a killing with so many tourists in the area. Moko walked past Taro, signaling him as he did, and sat at the table next to them. He picked up a little sheet that served as the menu, and talked to them while keeping his eyes locked on the selection of overpriced cafe snacks.

"So this is your partner?" Moko said, "Well, if you're vouching for her, I'm sure she can handle the work we have ta' do today. Our tickets are taken care of, as is a private hotel room in case we need to lay low with no questions asked."

He waggled his eyebrows, turning his eyes on Yoi briefly.

He was trying hard to annihilate his usual accent. His method of disguise did nothing to change that, unfortunately. But at least he didn't have to worry about getting bumped in the gut and dropping a henge.

"How do the museum and streets seem today?"

Moko took out the two other tickets, and put them on the table. If Taro had any other concerns, now was the time to get them out.

She’ll handle her part just fine.” Taichi said with loads of confidence, some of it was a little fake though.

"Hello!"

Yoi stood up to shake Moko’s hand. Being polite and professional was never her thing but for some reason she was acting that way right then. Her and Taichi made an odd pairing as they were extremely different in many ways. The former grass shinobi was never hasty and he was a calm person. His moves and even his words were always well-thought out. Yoi on the other hand was none of those things. They did however share a lack of morals and a love for the pirate life.

I guess streets are busier than usual.” He noted. “But the museum has been empty as expected. It’ll probably get the usual morning crowd soon and I already saw a few groups purchasing tickets.

Yoi and Taichi each picked a ticket from the table top. Moko had delivered them just as he said he would. The mercenary also took some comfort in knowing that Moko secured a backup plan in case the group needed to hide somewhere until the storm settled. Taichi was a big fan of contingencies. It was always good to know that if things didn’t go as planned, there were other options to lean back on.

Is there anything else before we get started?” It didn’t hurt to make sure everyone involved was ready to go.

Taichi and Moko had already spent their previous meeting planning and scouting. Everything had already been agreed upon including their course of action, the getaway plan and the spoils split. So the time for talking and planning was over. That day was one for the big heist.

Moko briefly shook Yoi's hand.

There were a million things. So many little possibilities that could make this all fall apart, and that was just considering the parts of the plan he had told Taichi. There were other plans and possibilities that might not come up at all. He assumed Taichi had his own ideas, especially since he had to deal with a hungry crew that had their own wants and wishes.

"No, and our group is up soon, so we should start makin' our way. The earlier we get started, the more daylight we have ta' burn." Moko said as he checked his own ticket. He stood up as if the menu didn't interest him after all.

They were right, it wasn't too busy. The crowd size was going to be smaller than he wanted. There was also the problem that some of the folks in the tourist groups would likely be shinobi. They would have to watch for errant jutsu being tossed around during their escape. Then again, most shinobi knew that using jutsu while in the city was a dangerous prospect. Samurai took that rather seriously.

Moko nodded to Yoi, and smiled, "I'll meet the two of you in line. I'm prepared to learn a little history today."

He didn't want to get cut up today. But, he knew this wasn't where his path to vengeance ended. This was just a stepping stone toward Fukumen's neck. Unfortunately, that man stayed in a rather tall tower.

Moko left the group first and Taichi followed suit shortly afterwards. Yoi quickly darted behind Taichi and leaned close to him. “I get a bigger cut than the guys, right?

The girl was always concerned with pay day. She also always spent it like a mad person but that wasn’t Taichi’s since she earned her pay. Despite her attitude she was by far more qualified than any other of the mercenary’s crew members and in some areas she was even better than the boss himself. For instance prior to purchasing the ship, the former grass shinobi barely knew anything about sailing and sea voyage necessities while Yoi had some decent experience with sea vessels. She also was the only crew member with shinobi training, having previously attained the rank of chuunin in the hidden mist. She was the second in command for a reason.

Don’t you always?” Taichi replied. “You’re here doing the dirty work after all.

The pair headed walked towards the museum, possibly looking like a father / daughter pair but they did look more like a couple. It didn’t matter either way, since people were less suspicious of families. The two of the stood in line, but it was moving at a rapid pace since everyone in that line had their tickets present. Within a couple of minutes the two former shinobi were inside their soon to be crime scene.

All they needed then was to meet up with Moko again to get their plan in motion but instead of waiting idly, Taichi and Yoi started viewing the first exhibit. The museum was rather huge as it was the primary one in the region and it had all sorts of things to see for those interested. Taichi was simply attempting estimating the worth of each item. He surely couldn't have stolen everything he wanted, because he would have needed a freight train for that so they were just going to go for their target unless something was really tempting on their way out.

Taichi started looking at a painting and some information about it, including who the artist was. It turned out to be a name that the mercenary vaguely recognized as someone famous who passed away a few years earlier, which meant that the value of that painting was surely on the rise. It was a cartoonish painting that looked silly to the former grass nin, but he didn’t care. That junk had value to other people.

"This looks expensive." He blandly stated.

Moko made it through the line before he was joined by the pair, which didn't really concern him. Their 'tour' was mostly a young man going exhibit to exhibit and collecting everyone who had tickets while talking them through what they were seeing in each room. Even in the first exhibit, quite a few people ignored her speech and instead looked at whatever grabbed their interest.

For Moko, what had his interest was the security level. There were a few men with no armor on, walking around with katanas at their side but a baton on their other hip. They didn't plan for big fights it seemed, but there was one wandering the exhibit, and one at the emergency exit he could see. Nothing out of the ordinary, it matched what they scouted so far.

Moko looked across the room, and noticed Taichi and his accomplice doing their own surveying. Good, they could keep an eye out for him. He had to start on his own task.

He walked over to a suit of samurai armor that was on display. It had on it the name of the original owner, a fighter from before the shinobi wars. All old nonsense that meant nothing to someone like Moko. He walked up close, passing a line on the floor that marked when guests were supposed to stop.

"Sir," Said the guard wandering the exhibit, almost immediately. That was actually a fast response time. "Please, stay behind the line."

That wasn't good, that response time was uncanny. Moko looked at the guard with a look of feigned surprise, "Oh my, apologies, didn't notice."

They were wearing ear pieces. Was someone watching the tour that intently? They have so many exhibits, how could someone notice him immediately? Something was going on here that their scouting couldn't notice. But he had no time to guess, he had to keep up with the plan.

"Sir." The guard repeated, "The line."

Moko hadn't moved yet, he looked down and widened his eyes. "Right, right."

He took a step back past the line, and purposely fudged it, teetering off balance toward the armor. The guards starting moving immediately, though this time to come to his aid as his hands flailed out to grab anything he could to prevent falling. The only object available was the armor.

He crashed into it, tilting the armor toward the wall. His hands gripped the fancy chest piece, and the guards arrived in time to help him stand back up and pull the armor up at the same time.

"Thank you, mah goodness. Lesson learned yeah?" He said with a blush and a smile.

He went back toward the tour leader, who seemed a little annoyed at him for causing such a commotion on his shift. As he walked he went past Taichi, and grumbled to the man, "One charge set."

It was on the back of the armor, which was pushed up against the wall. The first exhibit was close to the entrance, but still having as many points of explosion and distraction was good for their exit strategy.

Still, Moko knew this place had security cameras, and now he knew someone was keeping a keen eye out. Maybe they were just watching him, but maybe they were just better than he expected.

The mercenary did his best not to keep watching Moko, but he noticed that he had already started getting the job done. He seemed to be pushing it with the guards, but at least he was making progress. After all he had to work by himself, unlike Taichi who had a minion at his disposal. The painting Taichi was observing was on the other side of the hall from his partner and he figured that it was a proper place to set a second charge. Most of the guards were distracted by other exhibits’ visitors except for one that was standing fairly close to Taichi. Was he suspicious? The missing nin had been dwelling around the painting for a bit too long so he had to act quickly.

Make him look away.” He whispered to Yoi. “All I need is a second.

Taichi didn’t need to say anything else. Yoi understood her role perfectly well so she immediately walked around the guard so that she was the one facing Taichi and then caught the man’s attention. She spoke to him, touched his arm and giggled. Those three actions bought the mercenary a good ten second window in which he placed a charge behind the painting and walked away before the guard regained his senses. Yoi on the other hand walked towards the restroom to really sell the act that she was going for.

Second one good to go.” He spoke through the comm.

Taro started navigating his way through the crowds, looking around the museum and scouting the area for himself. He knew the layout, but seeing it from inside had a different feeling to it. Taichi was mentally marking any potential exits, probable evacuation points and possible hiding spots although there were few of the latter.

Where exactly is the prize?” He wondered to himself.

The tour was moving forward, and Moko followed the slow gaggle of people as they made their way into the next exhibit. If their layout was correct, they still had a long walk down a hall before the next exhibit which should have their target. As long as nothing odd happened.

Moko looked at some of the strange pottery in the next selection, pretending he was nodding along with the words of the tour guide.

He spoke into the comm unit, as if whispering to himself. "Be careful, they have someone watching the cam. It ain't ya' average security guard."

If they were going to succeed, Taichi needed to have all the details after all. It didn't mean they could stop, but if Moko noticed his girl's little distraction tactic, then their eye in the sky surely did as well. Not enough to send the armed guard it seemed, but maybe suspicion was rising.

Moko walked past one of the other people on the tour, and gave them a slight bump. It was enough to make the person teeter near the off-limits rope. The guards didn't seem to respond at all. They were watching him in particular. No matter, it wasn't going to slow them down a beat.

He walked over to one of the guards, and positioned himself just right to put himself nearly between the guard and the person he gave a small love tap to.

"Sir," Moko said with a little bow of the head and an awkward smile, "Wanted ta' know your policy on uh, you know, touching the goods."

The guard, who was relatively young, but had an air of authority around him from his top knot to the hand on his baton, looked stern at Moko. "Don't."

Moko shrugged as if embarrassed to continue. Then cocked his head off toward his earlier mark. He needed the guard's eyes to follow, that was all. The man looked for just a moment, and would see something a little rugged and old looking sticking out of the mark's pocket.

"Hate to tattle, but maybe tell that ta' the gentleman over there, eh?"

The guard's eyes went wide, and he pulled the baton before shouting across the room. "Sir! Put that back immediately!"

Several of the other guards turned, and soon they were all swarming the confused man who only knew that he was ribbed by a stranger. The guards tackled him to the ground, yanking everything they could out of his pockets. Poor guy didn't realize Moko had given him a small gift he had pilfered off of the armor in the previous room.

Moko had to fight not to smile, "There's ya' window," he said into his comm.

Already the tour guide looked like she wanted to distance the tour from the chaos.

Thanks for the warning,” Taichi replied to the warning about the security cams. “And if you think that the footage is being actively monitored we need to act fast.

Moko had raised an interesting point about the security footage. If the cameras were being actively and carefully watched, Taichi was going to get in trouble as he was actively skirting across the edges of the ‘do not touch’ ropes and he would definitely be seen fiddling with something. That would have been an issue if he was being actively watched but he couldn’t tell for sure. That was a risk but thankfully not one that Taichi didn’t have a contingency for. The mercenary had intentionally went into the museum in his natural body without a disguise, saving the henge technique for the escape or as a plan B sort of thing.

It was still too early to worry about contingencies and Taichi needed to move forward. Moko created quite the scene, one that was rather amusing to watch but unfortunately the former grass nin needed to walk away from the room to locate and take the merchandise. A bunch of guards gathered around the poor man while most of the visitors froze to stare at the scene. Even the tour that Taichi was supposed to be a part of stalled in order to watch.

“The ladies room has potential.” Yoi informed the team through the comm unit. “As an escape route I mean.”

Taichi didn’t really concern himself with that Yoi was doing at the time since she seemed to be doing her own scouting and evaluating. She was capable enough and knew her role within the team. She was also readily available to whatever task Taichi was going to assign to her so he let her roam freely as he took care of the main issue.

Taro walked into the next room, which was rather large and filled the glass casings of historical items but Taichi didn’t even bother looking at any of them. The distraction wasn’t going to last and he needed to act. Taichi quickly passed through the room and made his way to the other side and into another hall.

The hall was about half the size of the previous one and didn’t contain much. What stood out was a display case that was pinned on the right wall. It was the scroll Moko was after and it was right there for Taichi to take. There were no guards present in that room since they were all distracted by the ruckus that Moko created but there were two offices with glass walls and had a direct view of the display case. One of the offices was a surveillance room.

I have eyes on the target and the surveillance man.” Taichi described the situation to Moko, but Yoi was listening in as well. “The problem is the man is behind glass and there’s one other witness. This isn’t ideal but our best bet is to do this right now.

Behind glass, and of course looking in on exactly what Moko wanted. Their special eye up above. That was going to make this a lot harder than Moko expected. Not that he thought it would be easy, but he didn't see so much resistance out of a museum security team. They were going to have to improvise something, and fast. If they didn't, their window was going to close, and they would be stuck brute forcing it.

"Well, there's always tha' hard way. We knew we might have to crack a head or two." Though that was probably a bad idea with so many samurai around to guard everything. Even if they were all neophytes, they would outnumber Taichi and him so bad there was still the chance of everything falling apart.

"Maybe smoke?" Moko tried to figure out what could be set on fire. He had a light on him, but there was a major problem with that, "Of course, he would notice us setting the blaze. We need a quick distraction, something they would be afraid to ignore."

The ruckus was calming down now. They had the man pinned, were searching him, and several of the samurai were trying to get the tour group to ignore what was going on. That would still take a little bit, but it did mean the surveillance man might not watch the situation much longer.

"Wait," Moko said, "Better'an smoke, an alarm. Can your gal light up the toilets? The alarm might set off the sprinklers, and more importantly, an evacuation order. Think you can do it hun?"

If not, things were going to get explosive, and fast. Actually, one way or another, there was probably going to be a bang. They were just getting to the scroll, and if the surveillance man was suspicious at all, Moko doubted he would just let them walk out.
