Nise-Style Spirit Possession
Wraith of the Well

Unlike the Path of the Ancestral Spirits which draws on techniques and knowledge of the clan’s Miko roots, the Nise-Style Spirit Possession is the culminations of what it means to be a shinobi. It combines Ninjutsu and Taijutsu together to form an elemental-based fighting style that utilizes the mystical waters derived from the Well of Bones. It however does not forsake the clan’s hallowed teaching and instead further draws on them for advancement, by incorporating variation of the clan’s spiritual energy techniques into the style.

Executive Summary:
In essence the user goes to "sleep" - more like partially/spiritually dead state, then there spirit leaves there body and possesses a body of mystical water which takes the form of a Wraith. They then control and use this wraith with their spirit which resides within it. The technique has a few vulnerabilities, and the user needs to manage the risk of combat versus protecting his/her body. There is also managing the amount of water the user has left, which is through the charge system.

While in spectral form the user loses the ability to speak and give commands to his spirit guide. The spirit guide then automatically moves to guard the user’s body and call out if any threat is sensed that would target it (as it has been trained by the Ancestors to do).

Additionally while in spectral form the user cannot use techniques other than those in this list or afforded to them by stages/techniques within this list. Wraith Form techniques in this list also cannot be used outside of Wraith Form.



Sphere Control represents the user’s manipulation and blending of spiritual energy and water natured chakra to form spheres of water reinforced with spiritual energy for various purposes; such as projectiles and barriers. It also defines the number of spheres the user can generate with a single technique.

Resource Management is a unique aspect of this style which involves the use of the Nise Item: Water of the Well. A single purchase of the item comes with 3 charges, and each time the Wraith form is damaged it dissipates and immediately reforms consuming one of these charges. If the Wraith is damaged when it has no charges remaining then it cannot reform and the Wraith techniques all end causing the user to wake up from his sleeping state. The style will not be usable again until the user replenishes his supply at the Well of Bones (typically starting a new thread).

Stage 1:

Stat Requirements: 4 Control, 4 Power
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 0

The student here focuses on the learning the basic form of the style. The user draws out their own spiritual energy and soul, and combines them with chakra to create a spectral essence which then possesses a source of mystical water, i.e. Water of the Well. The user then falls into a deep sleep, while from this source emerges a wraith-like form made of water. This spectre which is fully controlled by the user’s spirit, typically has two arms though the rest of the body varies from user to user, and hovers about 0.5 meters above the ground. The body of the wraith appears vaporous and insubstantial, as it is made up of lightly suspended water particles. Any attack will cause the spectral form to dissipate. The dissipated form will however reconstitute instantly consuming a Water of the Well minor wound charge. Thus the overall style is limited by the mystical resources the user has remaining. Once the wraith is dissipated without resources remaining to reconstitute, his spirit returns to his sleeping body with the aid of his spirit guide and he awakens.

Regular Techniques:

Wraith Form: Arm Extension
This is a passive ability which allows the wraith to stretch and extend its arms by an additional arms length. It also defines the number of arms the wraith can possess (Base is two arms).
Stage 2: Technique is extended to two additional arms lengths instead. Allowing for further throwing range, and high speed projectiles.
Stage 5: Can now create a third arm for the user to extend and utilize.
Stage 6: Can now create a fourth arm for the user to extend and utilize.

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Healing Touch
Requirements:
While in Wraith form the mystical properties of the Wall of the Well are enhanced to be able to be used to seal wounds of non-clan members as well, this requires the wraith to make contact with the wound. For major wounds it may only be used once per thread.

Stage 2:

Stat Requirements: 7 Control, 7 Power, 6 Willpower
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 1

Here the student remains focused on the basics aspects of control and movement. Though primarily still a support and scouting technique at this stage, the user begins to grasp his first offensive and defensive abilities.

Regular Techniques:

Wraith Form: Soak
While the user can easily phase through small object and bars due to his physical composition, he can now also soak his form inside a solid porous object (e.g. wall) and emerge on the other side if he/she so wished. Maximum object thickness in order to emerge the other side is 0.5m, otherwise user has to emerge the same side they entered. When Soak is used in combat it utilizes a Kawarimi usage.

Wraith Form: Pressure Sphere
With this the user begins to form his first sphere, roughly the size of a fist (but ultimately can generate spheres equal to his Sphere Control). The basic forms of sphere generation is practiced here, in which the student forms a watery membrane and then draws on excess spiritual energy from the Ancestral Realm to fill it (giving it a form of pressure). This can then thrown by the user as a blunt force cannonball. This particular variation is favored by projectile specialists.
Stage 3: Spheres now explode on contact with kinetic energy equal to an explosive pouch.

Stage 3:

Stat Requirements: 10 Control, 10 Power, 8 Willpower
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 2

Now comfortable with the basic control of the wraith form, the user begins to utilize more advanced techniques. The first of which is to fill the body with excess spiritual energy, allowing it to take on a more substantial form and access more techniques. This is fundamental to beginning to use the wraith for close combat taijutsu, however this does not allow the wraith to wield weapons yet. At this stage the wraith has become more durable, and will not always dissipate from every attack. Twice per thread the wraith may instantly recover a severed wraith limb, instead of completely dissipating an reconstituting (this does not use up wound charges).

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Painful Touch
With this technique, spiritual energy is concentrated at the wraith’s hands, upon physical contact this causes the target to feel pain as if being burned. The pain at this stage is a precursor of what would eventually come with advancement in this style.
Stage 4: Technique becomes Wraith Form: Flesh-eating Touch. Chakra in the hands now cause an corrosive effect which eats away at living flesh (it has no effect on other substances), thus turning the pain of the original variation into reality. Prolonged contact would eventually eat to the bone, but is hard to maintain due to the vulnerabilities of the wraith form and the amount of resources it would need to reconstitute in close combat several times.

Stage 4:

Stat Requirements: 17 Control, 16 Power, 10 Reserves, 14 Willpower
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 3

Now that the student has mastered the pressurizing the form of the wraith he begins to practise other styles of taijutsu in his spectral state. The user can now use other taijutsu styles in wraith form, adding their taijutsu bonuses to the stats of the wraith.

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Pressure Weapon
The user can now form a pressurized weapon of water and spiritual energy to be utilized in pressurized wraith form. With this he/she can form a single weapon of up to Item cost 3. Weapons are as durable as their real world counterparts, but if broken can be reconstituted by expending a minor wound charge.
Stage 5: Additionally the user can now form up to three weapons of Item cost 3 or less.
Stage 6: User can now form up to four weapons.

Wraith Form: Barrier Sphere
By now the user has realized that one of the key weaknesses of the style is its reliance on the mystical water resource, and that some attempts to preserve the wraith form is necessary. With this technique variation the user can form a sphere of mystical water around the wraith body which blocks techniques up to Stage 3. As the technique is limited to form around the wraith only, the user has to position the spectre to intercept an attack if he wishes to defend an ally or his original body.
Stage 5: The user can now form a shield around his sleeping body as well. Blocks techniques up to Stage 4.
Stage 6: The user can now form a shield around a number of allies including his sleeping body equal to his Sphere Control. Blocks techniques up to Stage 5.

Stage 5:

Stat Requirements: 21 Control, 20 Power, 15 Reserves, 16 Willpower
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 4

At this stage the user begins to access the finer aspects of the pressurized form and begins to manipulate air pressure around the wraith allowing his the ability to speak in pressurized wraith form. With this he can now issue Kourekai commands in this form (Koureikai - Communing with the Spirits required), relinquishing the permanent guard duty his spirit companion is usually charged with in this style. This marks the point at which the user begins to accept the real risks of utilizing the style, and is prepared to die in it’s usage.

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Hydro Scream
The wraith mimics the screams of the banshees of the Ancestral realm, but instead of sonic energy launches a torrent of pressurized water at a target from the wraith’s mouth that is accompanied by a deafening shriek. The pressured torrent has a range of 10 meters, and can be held from up to 2 posts. The user may rotate and tilt his head during this period to control the torrential beam, but his main body is fixed in place. The shriek lasts as long as the beam is held, and radiates outward 50 meters in all directions indiscriminately deafening friend and foe alike.

Stage 6:

Stat Requirements: 28 Control, 28 Power, 19 Reserves, 20 Willpower, 16 Tactics
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 8

The user has started to master control and manipulation of the spiritual pressure and in and around their constructs, and gains the ability to fly/hover up to 10 meters in the air.

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Pressure Sphere Manipulation
With this the user no longer creates and throws spheres, but instead controls them through the air by manipulating the air pressure around each sphere with spiritual energy. The spheres have grown to the size of a beach ball, and the user can generate and control a number of spheres equal to his Sphere Control. Spheres now however can be triggered to explode at any time, and with the force of an explosive tag. The spheres may be controlled up to 30 meters away from the wraith.

Stage 7:

Stat Requirements: 37 Control, 36 Power, 26 Reserves, 27 Willpower, 17 Tactics
Stat Bonuses: +3 Speed (applied to Wraith Form)
Sphere Control: 16

The final capabilities of the wraith is achieved in which it gains the ability to fly/hover up to 100 meters in the air. Outside of combat it may transform its arms into large wings and traverse great distances within seconds. In its winged form it may carry a number of allies with it equal to its Sphere Control. These allies (including his sleeping body) are contained within air pressurized water spheres that trail behind the winged wraith in flight.

Special Techniques:

Wraith Form: Depths of the Well
The technique creates four spherical portals (1 m in diameter) of spiritual energy which float around the user, these portals then fill themselves with water summoned directly from the Well of Bones. With this the user gains access to water-based techniques of up to Stage 6 (ninjutsu or otherwise, but cannot be used for genjutsu) that he knows in wraith form, but they have to utilize the floating orbs of water as a source. Each externally known water technique used consumes one of the four spheres, but does not consume a jutsu usage.

I want to double check, because sometimes I feel like it is one, and sometimes the other. The main thrust of this style is that it is a chakra style that turns the person into water wraith form, right? They aren't puppeteering a wraith, they themselves are the wraith, yeah?

Yeah they become the wraith in essence, it is definitely not a puppet. So basically the user sends his spiritual conscious into the wraith to control it, leaving his original spiritless body behind sleeping. Think Astral Projection into the body of water.

Alright, I'll take my bat to this. If you think I'm being unfair or want a second opinion I'd totally understand and encourage it, since I've kind of avoided looking at this since I have my own misgivings about some of the techs. That being said, here's my hot take!

I don't like how you need to take both lists to justify taking this one. Lists aren't as big of a limited resource these days but players tend to be discouraged when they are 'forced' to take techniques as prerequisite just to make their characters work. I would strong suggest considering integrating the whole spirit animal thing as a 'free' technique the character gets when they take a Nise list. That way you can keep this list independent of the Nise Path tree, so a character isn't forced to take both lists if they don't want to.

All the rules about the Wraith form should be noted before you start describing Stages. If I'm reading a thread and want to know what a Wraith is or isn't capable of, I shouldn't have to dig through Stages to find it. It should be right in the beginning of the list for easy reference. Whenever there's a deviation or change from the 'base' Wraith ruleset, that can go in the Stage description.

I don't understand what you intend with the Technique Variation and Technique Adaption. Not only are both of those phrases basically the same thing, are these supposed to be special techs or what? Are they free when you buy the stage? To you have to spend jutsu points on them? Do they consume additional usages? I'll mention this throughout this post but I don't like these in general because they're just padding, but if you really intend to keep them then you need to clarify what they are doing.

Stage One
We're trying to get away from hard stat scaling. Use Physical Levels rather than physical stats here.

There's too much going on in too big a block of text. I recommend bullet points or, even better, separating each ability out into regular techniques since this is supposed to be a taijutsu style. When I want to reference a specific power it's much easier to find when I can just scan down a list rather than having to dig through a huge paragraph to find the one sentence I care about.

If it was me, I'd get rid of the physical defense part altogether. Instead I'd combine everything into one simple ability. Wraiths are dissipated by any attack, but can reform instantly X times per thread. I don't like the 1 post delay in reforming because from experiencing, having to spend an entire post doing nothing is super lame and feels awful.

The healing part I don't quite understand. It's more tracking of numbers and I don't like how I have to reference both the unique item you are registering AND both clan lists just to figure out what a character can do. Tracking all these different consumables (how many wounds have I healed? How many jutsu usages am I using? How many water charges do I have?) sounds like a headache as well. I'd toss both of these and just make this a special technique. 'In Wraith Form, the user may seal (but not heal) any 1 minor or major wound per thread'. You can add fluff about the water here if you want, but I wouldn't make it consume anything other than a jutsu usage.

Everything after 'additional note' should go up where I said you put the 'rules' of Wraiths. It doesn't belong here in Stage One since it's fundamental stuff that everybody needs to know about how this list works.

Stage Two
Soak should be labeled as a regular technique. There needs to be a limit on how thick of a wall they can pass through. I'd use the various phasing-through-wall techs we already have to get an idea of how strong this should be.

Pressure Sphere is just a water balloon, which I guess is fine, but mechanically I don't understand why it's even mentioned here. Can a character not throw their spheres if they don't take this technique? What's the point of saying they have 'sphere control' if they have to take this technique to do anything with those spheres in the first place? I guess I'm not understanding how you see these spheres being used in the thread if a character doesn't have this technique.

I don't get what you are doing with the Technique Advancement stuff. Just have the special techniques scale. They can scale. Add scaling. That's what scaling is for, so we don't have half a dozen techniques that are just incrementally better than the previous ones.

Stage Three
Split the separate abilities up into regular techniques.

There's too many things to track here. I'd break this up into strict per-thread usages. “Twice per thread the wraith may instantly recover a severed wraith limb”, or something like that.

I cannot understand what you mean by vaporous and pressurized forms. I didn't even realize you were describing two distinct types of wraith until you mentioned this difference. There's no reason to have these as two forms and I think it would be annoying to have to reference the list constantly to figure out what form can do which abilities. I'd just straight up combine both 'forms' to minimize any potential confusion.

Again, if you want Pressure Sphere to scale, add scaling to the tech. Stage Three: The Sphere explodes on impact with the force of an explosive pouch.

Stage Four
Are the weapons formed by the Retaliation technique bound by the same rules as wraiths? Do they break under the same conditions, or are they equivalent in durability to their real counterparts?

Barrier needs to scale with Stages, not Sphere Control. If you want it to scale then include scaling, I don't like the idea of having to navigate through the list to hunt down a specific number just to figure out how strong the shield is.

Flesh-eating Touch needs to be part of the original scaling of the first technique. I'll reiterate this because I think it's important: I don't like having to read through an entire list to figure out how strong a specific technique is. If a technique has a boosted or different ability at a different Stage, then it should be mentioned in the same place as the original technique.

Stage Five
Once again I'll mention how much I don't like how you have to take a Miko tech to take a Taijutsu Stage. Super restrictive prerequisites make lists less attractive, not more.

Scream needs a range and a post duration on the deafening. Also I don't like the fluff but I guess I'll get into that on my comments on the Path list.

Add this scaling to the Barrier and Pressure Weapon techs.

Stage Six
Same comments regarding prerequisites here.

All these beast upgrades are weird and you drop them all at once in a big cluster. Thematically I don't understand why the beast is getting these upgrades anyway since this list is about the user wraith, not their spirit animal. I also don't like this mixed scaling, where a Miko technique in an entirely different list is getting boosted by a Taijutsu technique in an entirely different list. That being said, I don't think any of these boosts are really that big of a deal. It just feels out of place to be strengthening your spirit animal here rather than in the Path list.

I don't like Fear and Strength as a technique, since it feels like stuff that should just be scaling for the techniques its modifying. Fundamentally there's nothing wrong with it, but I'd call it padding rather than something that deserves it's own special tech slot.

Hydro Scream needs a range, a duration, and should be part of the scaling for the original tech and not it's own thing.

Stage Seven
Other than the scaling thing I keep harping on, I don't see much issue here. If anything this whole Stage feels really weak, but that's for you to decide.

There have been a few discussions in staff chat regarding this. For me personally, I want more clarity, kind of like what you did for Merdle and Junge. I need to know, spelled out plainly and not just in techniques, what the spheres are, what their purpose is (not just how many can be controlled) and an explanation of exactly how Water of the Well is used as a resource.

Sorry for taking so long to get to this, life has not been kind to me lately lol

I have reformatted the entire layout and structure to meet Junge's feedback regarding scaling and simplicity.

Addressed various concerns regarding clarity from Wess.

Removed some restrictions and over complications as advised.

Reworked Stage 6 and 7 to remove the beast techniques and better remain on theme, as well as to increase the power level as they were too weak for these stages.
