Default Can't Touch These Hot Gates

OOC: For Kasumi and Sobyono

Easy mission, that's what the kid called it. Easy job, no one will even notice them. That Seijuu kid was easy work. Honestly, Sobyono was sure the kid could cut him down in a one on one if he actually had half a nerve. But with full war breaking out between the 'King' and the ninja village, Sobyono found himself in the stupid position of a non-shinobi squarely on the side of the village. At least, for now.

So when the kid said to jump, Sobyono found himself asking height, angle, duration. Now he was standing outside the protective outer walls of Atama city, trying his best to seem nonchalant. The kid was ordered to head in there on some mission too secret to tell his personal bodyguard, which didn't bother Sobyono in the slightest. Most of the mercenaries in the city had left in large waves, marching on the hidden village. Those remaining were guarding the city. Which was what Sobyono was pretending to be doing as he stood outside the massive open gates with his back against the wall.

What he was actually doing was more particular, and several magnitudes more idiotic. While he was told to ignore anyone leaving the city to go on their adventure to attack the village, the kid told him to divert anyone trying to enter. If they didn't want to go away, he would have to use force. Which meant Sobyono really hoped that no one of note forgot their hat or something after leaving the gates.

There was one saving grace to this whole shit show. At least, he hoped it was a saving grace.

A group of five men on horseback charged out of the gates, heading off on some road to who knows where. Sobyono motioned with his one arm to them as they left, but they didn't even bother to notice him. Sobyono got comfortable against the wall again. For all he knew, he would be out doing this all day.

Then he noticed in the distance, a wagon with no cover was coming back, pulled by one horse. One man was driving it, Three were riding in the rear.

They were still far off, which meant he had time to notify the 'saving grace'.

"Hey, sweetcakes!" Sobyono called off into nowhere. When they started this lookout, he asked her to stay out of sight. It didn't leave a lot of time to get acquainted with her, but like most of those ninja, she was a little too weird for him to initiate idle chitchat anyway. "A wagon is approaching. Looks like four guys. I'm gonna stop them. Just... you know, keep an eye out in case they try to cut my other arm off."

Sobyono stepped out into the middle of the road, waiting as the wagon made the journey to him so he could flag them down.

Despite having never met her handler properly, Kasumi was never one to ignore direct orders, especially if it came from Oto-royalty. Her entire existence as a Sound shinobi was privy to but a few Seijuu, most notably being the Otokage. She had been enslaved by the Naga at a young age and subsequently discarded, thought to be dead. But the demon that slumbered inside her interested the powers that be once she had been discovered amongst the Honekaigi that remained in the catacombs. She had interested them enough at least, to weaponize her and keep her a secret from the mad scientists that plagued the catacombs.

Her handler was none other than Seijuu Sanosuke, nephew of the current Otokage and son of the previous one. From what she was able to garner about him through letters, he was a peculiar fellow with an equally peculiar taste in friends. Kasumi had been tasked with sealing the entry to Atama City with a one armed mercenary.

Sobyono, he called himself. Despite the slightly distressing scent that wafted from the man, he seemed ultimately harmless, at least, in regards to her own safety. She wasn’t sure what kind of allegiance he owed to Sanosuke, and in truth, it probably wasn’t that different from her own. The two would be allies - for now.

Dressed in her normal black attire, Kasumi also donned a hooded cloak to aid in her discretion. This time, she wore long sleeves to hide the eighth note she had tattooed on her right arm. Amongst the shadows along the path leading to Atama City, she hid, while Sobyono stood out in the open, blending in with the other mercenaries.

“I’ll, um… Yes Sobyono-san! I’ll make sure they don’t cut your other arm off.”

With limited combat experience, Kasumi was on the fence about engaging any enemies. She knew however, that if she did, things could turn sour quickly. Tsubasa wasn’t the strongest bijuuko, but she was rather bloodthirsty.

I just hope nothing bad happens!

There wasn't a lot of confidence in her voice, but Sobyono really didn't have time to think about it. The people in the wagon were going to be approaching soon, one way or another. He could didn't have much of a choice but to follow orders. He didn't want to imagine what would happen if he let someone past, and then something happened to the kid. Sanosuke was okay, but his family were... terrifying. Which was saying a lot, because Sobyono knew a lot of very scary people.

The wagon started to slow down, but driver shouted out to Sobyono, "Out of the way you daft fool!"

Sobyono stood his ground, "Afraid I can't do that!"

The wagon slowed to a stop, and Sobyono could see now that these men had seen battle. Were they out on the front? That wasn't smart, deciding to go out and fight a bunch of shinobi at their own village? Sobyono would sooner abandon whatever unit, no pay was high enough to make up for being dead.

"I was told no one gets back in while Hidden Sound still stands!" Sobyono said with as much authority as he could muster. He put his hand on his hip, and gave them his best scowl.

A gargled cough came from the back of the wagon, and one of the men there looked down with panic in his eyes. There was someone else in the wagon, someone Sobyono couldn't see. Someone that was clearly hurt bad.

"He is dying," Said one of the guys in the back of the wagon, before jumping out, "We don't have time for this."

They were all carrying swords and more, but the guy that was driving was the one who seemed most impressive. His armor was reminiscent of light samurai gear, though he didn't have any identifying crests on there. Then again, neither did Sobyono, and he was trained in Iron. But it was how the driver carried himself, Sobyono could feel his bloodlust rising as the man jumped from behind the horse and took heavy steps over toward the one-armed man.

"We got ambushed on our way to the fight, and one of our friends is choking on blood there in the back, pipsqueak. So you have new order, let us into the city!"

The driver drew his sword, and just as fast two more were pointed at Sobyono. Sobyono lifted his one arm, "Hey, hey, calm down there boys. I'm just doing my job... You wouldn't want to get yourselves hurt now, would you?"

He had to admit, situations like this, a good fight right in front of him, a trick up his sleeve. It got his heart pumping.

He could see the flash of confusion on the driver's face, wondering exactly how a one armed man that was outnumbered intended on 'hurting' them.

The driver growled, "Just kill him."

Oh, drat!

The wagon rolled passed Kasumi toward Sobyono. Instinctively, she maneuvered through the shadows behind the wagon. Her time hiding from the Naga had left her quite adept at sneaking around – she waited until all eyes were on the samurai before she crept quietly up behind them. The mentions of killing made her tense. Bloodshed wasn’t on her agenda, but at this rate, it looked like it couldn’t be helped. Unless there were negotiations to be made.

Her first thought was to offer to heal the man who was injured, but that wouldn’t do. That would just add someone who would want to kill her to the mix. Even with missing-nin being on the Mercenary King’s payroll…

Put the dying one out of his misery and help out your lord’s friend. You think too much.

Tsubasa sat in a henhouse that towered over Kasumi’s psyche. Ironically, the two of them were about the same size. Every now and then, she chimed in with pieces of advice. But truthfully, the creature was hungry for blood and longed for exercise.

With a grimace, Kasumi jumped into the wagon. A blade made from bone shot out of her wrist, and she yanked the dying man up by his hair and pressed the dull side of her blade against his carotid. Medical training did have its advantages.

“Um, please don’t hurt my friend over there! He wants to keep his arm and do his job, and uh, I don’t want to hurt yours.”

She paused.

“Your friend, not your arm. But I will hurt your arm if you try and hurt us!”

She understood why the others were trying to save their friend. He was younger than them all, younger than her maybe, and he was in rough shape. His face was covered in blood and grime –a head wound somewhere, coupled with a stub for a leg. They had managed to form a hasty tourniquet to mitigate blood loss, but the chance of him succumbing to an infection was more than likely. It was pitiful – gruesome work truly, but Kasumi didn’t have any problems with it. She had seen the horrors of humanity at the hands of the Naga. What she was doing paled in comparison.

Ninjas made the best bad people. Even a girl as quiet as this Kasumi, she was fine with sneaking into the back of the wagon and threatening the very person these men were all here to protect. That was cold blooded, in a way that ironically warmed his heart. Ninja really were the best mercenaries of all.

The men were clearly alarmed by Kasumi popping up, the driver turned his attention, but his weapon remained pointed at Sobyono. The other two turned full body, looking the opposite direction.

"An ambush!" one of them shouted.

"Ninja!" said the other.

Sobyono took a silent step back, and drew his weapon, which was enough to get the driver to split his glance between Sobyono and Kasumi.

"You heard the little lady," Sobyono said with a grin, "no touchy, or your friend in there gets it."

The air instantly became tense. It was obvious, they were instantly at a disadvantage. If Kasumi wanted, she could end the whole reason they were riding back. Besides, as most non-shinobi mercenaries learned fast, you couldn't exactly tell how strong a kid was once they started doing shinobi tricks. They could be just a kid who wasn't capable of much more than throwing shuriken made of an element, or they could blow up a city block. There were some identifiers, but half the time you found out after you got tossed across a battlefield once or twice.

The men stood with weapons ready, unsure how to move, their leader locked up in indecision. Sobyono didn't envy him.

"Easy choice," Sobyono said, "drop your weapons, we let you ride back toward the battlefield. Maybe you find a field medic. Maybe your friend dies on the way, saves you half the trip."

Sobyono could feel the driver's bloodlust peak, and for a moment he was prepared to defend himself. But then he got it under control, a long breath and his sword arm went slack. This was over.

Or, it should have been. There was one contingency that Sobyono didn't consider. Well, he did consider it, but he put it in the back of his mind with other terrible situations that would immediately take this from a bad situation to life or death.

A voice came from behind him, from inside the city.

"What, exactly, is happening here?" It was a young man's voice, full of equal parts venom and smarm.

It was Sobyono's turn to take a step back to take a triangular defensive position. It should be noted, for anyone that doesn't know, that missing your arm makes this position significantly less useful.

The new entry was definitely a shinobi. His clothing was skin-tight, and his long braided hair gave off an aloof air. His eyes were an unnatural yellow, almost catlike. He wore a large billowing coat that flowed behind him as he walked out of the city gates and overlooked the scene. His belt buckle was a village symbol, scratched out, but Sobyono honestly didn't keep track of all of them enough to tell which one it was.

Sobyono opened his mouth to make an excuse, but had... nothing.

"Well..."

‘No touchy or your friend gets it?’ Samurai are so strange.

It seems that the trio of mercenaries and the Seijuu’s retainers (was Sobyono a retainer? He was on Sound’s payroll, Kasumi knew that much) had reached an impasse. Good, less bloodshed for her. At least, the kunoichi thought.

Like Sobyono, she had pushed everything that could go wrong into the back of her mind. The chance of it happening was there, but it was important for them to stick to their mission. With the appearance of a new shinobi that clearly wasn’t on their side, Kasumi let out a sigh. Gradually, she had been letting Tsubasa exert more influence over her. Not quite enough to benefit from it yet, but almost. That was her contingency plan. As she saw it, it wasn’t four on two, it was four on three.

Kill him now!

“The Mercenary King demanded that no one be allowed into Atama City. These three decided that they needed to save their friend. Treason, if you ask me.”

Lying came naturally to Kasumi, and it wasn’t thanks to any special shinobi training. Her eyes narrowed harshly, and she bore her teeth. Each had been filed down to sharp points, aimed to turn her into a more efficient weapon. She didn’t even need her dagger. One bite and she could tear someone’s throat out.

“You’re lying.”

The man with the catlike eyes spoke a true, simple statement. Kasumi noticed his headband, scratched out, but like Sobyono, she had no idea which village he belonged to. Her time in the catacombs robbed her of worldly knowledge. Kasumi made a mental note to study the literature given to her following her introduction to Otogakure’s shinobi forces, should she survive.

“It’s our word against yours. We know our orders, do you?” The normal stuttering was gone. Kasumi was playing a part. She was no longer herself.

“Yes. Kill any Sound ninja and all of their allies.”

He adopted an offensive stance, and before anyone could move any further, Kasumi dragged her dagger across the boy’s throat, and something about her changed. Her blue eyes changed to a yellow cornea, with a black pupil and iris. Her normally thick, white hair, took on a fuzzy down quality, with the occasional feather sprouting amongst it. Her nails sharpened, and Kasumi too, readied herself.

As Kasumi's blade slid across the boy's throat, Sobyono knew that this was going to get ugly real fast. He had no way of knowing exactly how powerful this newly arrived shinobi was, but his confidence was enough to have Sobyono on edge. Thankfully, he had a shinobi of his own in his back pocket, so this wasn't his usual 'run for your life' situation. Considering the whole war going on, it felt good to have someone on his side that could go toe to toe with one of the crazy ninjas that just happened to pop up on the scene.

Well actually, he had no idea how strong Kasumi was. But as she bared her teeth, a chill went through his whole body. He didn't need the Sakki to know she was dangerous.

"Ryuji!" One of the mercenaries yelled as he saw Kasumi strike the killing blow. That was Sobyono's queue.

He kicked the weaker mercenary with the strength he could muster coming from a rather flat stance, square in the groin. It wasn't going to do any real lasting damage, but it was enough to give him some breathing room.

The mercenary in armor snapped his attention back to Sobyono, in time to see the samurai drawing his katana in a wide and reckless upward swing.

"RAAAGH!" Sobyono growled.

He intended to press in on the three of them, give the shinobi girl some room to work.

The strange shinobi smirked at Kasumi's killing blow.

"I don't usually fight feral children," He said as he flashed through hand seals without moving any closer, "But I guess this does count as a job."

As he made the last seal, he pulled out a solid black kunai. All at once, several shadows around Kasumi coalesced and charged at her with kunai out and ready to slash. There were enough of them that it seemed like they intended to pile on, all jumping her in one concentrated attack.
