Hitomi frowned. They didn't know what was killing large portions of jungle? And everyone was okay with that? Weird. There wasn't much the Nara could do or say on the subject. She didn't really care about what caused a rot... as long as it didn't kill her, too. Then she'd be really mad.

While it was fun to have the attention of a hot guy, the Nara's opinion of him began to sour quickly when he locked eyes with her. It was clear that he thought she was going to do something stupid. It had been quite some time since anyone had suggested that she was unintelligent (even if the words hadn't been spoken aloud), and she didn't appreciate it now. Taisuke was becoming less attractive by the moment. She managed to bite her tongue and keep her snide comments to herself... for now.

The Nara was surprised when Tetsumi called her attention. She caught the object thrown her way and looked at it quizzically. She knew what it was for but didn't immediately know why it had been given to her rather than the Aburame donning it herself. She made the connections quickly, though, once she remembered the type of relationship a member of that clan had with her kikai. The bugs would protect her.

Ick.

She slipped the mask over her mouth and suddenly felt confident that she looked badass. She smiled, though no one would really have been able to see it. "Thanks."

Hitomi hopped along in Taisuke's footsteps, though she did have a little more difficulty with it since her legs were quite a bit shorter than his. She was preparing to awkwardly scurry over the tree trunk, but halted abruptly when their guide froze. She squinted, trying to get a better look at what was in the tree, but she wasn't able to identify what, exactly, was making the noise. Clearly it was dangerous, given Taisuke's reaction. Was it a snake? Was it a trap? Was it the tree itself?

The kunoichi didn't want to make any drastic movements or make any sudden noise. She remained perfectly still, with the exception of her eyes cutting sideways to find Taisuke. "What is it? Can we move past it slowly? I'd rather not fight it in a field of killer mushrooms." Her words were just barely audible. It was difficult to make a plan of action when she had no idea what she was dealing with.

Tetsumi fell back as the group continued forward. Her face was blank beneath the sunglasses and mask, but her skin was literally roiling beneath her full-body coverage. The chuunin brought up a hand to cover her mouth and nose—understandable, as the stench was nearly overwhelming, but her main goal was to cut down on the sound of her hissing to her kikai.

"What the actual fuck," she demanded. Their responses were less than helpful; there was a cacophony of wrong and dead and danger, but nothing explicit. "Fine, I'll be careful, just—simmer down. I can't keep us safe if you're tearing my insides apart."

Kikai didn't apologize, but her hive managed to give off the distinct feeling of chagrin as they settled. The anxiety was still there, fizzing just under Tetsumi's skin in the form of several thousand unhappy bodies, but she could move and think and hear again.

"What is it? Can we move past it slowly?" Hitomi was asking. Tetsumi contained a wince.

Was this what got you so riled up? she wondered, but already knew the answer. Whatever had caused the Rot—that was the issue. She doubted the kikai had even noticed their current danger. Tetsumi dropped her hands to her belt, selecting a single scroll. It wasn't likely that anything in these woods would be easily subdued, and the simplest techniques were often the most accurate. No Dagger Cascade in these woods, she thought wryly. Her eyes shifted to the massive mushrooms growing from fallen tree, and her hands fell away. I destroy the tree, I disturb them. Double fuck.

Tetsumi grabbed two kunai from her pack. The hissing had only intensified despite their careful movements; if Taisuke tried to get over the trunk, she predicted only disaster. "We'll find another way through," Tetsumi murmured. "Taisuke, no sudden movements. Step towards me. We'll backtrack."

Yeah, yeah, I know, hold on.

Taisuke half-whispered over his shoulder as he carefully lifted his foot and stepped away from the tree. When the hissing didn’t subside, he moved a little further back towards the shinobi. The wood groaned and creaked as something within it started to move out. Hints of scarlet showed through gaps in the trunk, and then the whole beast slithered out one end of the tree.

A massive, bright red viper, easily longer than the tree itself, started to spill out onto the dust-covered ground. The snake reared up to tower over the shinobi, as thick around as any of them, and its tongue flicked about to taste the rotted air. Or, rather, tongues, as the viper turned to reveal a second head separated from the first by a few feet of neck before they conjoined into one body.

One head looked at Takeo and opened its mouth to hiss at him – twin fangs dropped down from the top of its mouth, each as long as the boy’s forearms. The other head turned this way and that to stare between the girls and Taisuke before concentrating on Tetsumi. Its eyes narrowed and focused as if glaring at her, but otherwise the snake seemed content to stay back. Taisuke slowly lifted a hand to point at one of the larger mushrooms nearby; the snake’s tail coiled up the base of the mushroom and the tip danced around the spore vents.

M…maybe we should run for it.

Takeo listened to the hissing, his hand on the hilt of his sword until the beast began to move from the log. What the fuck is this… But no, the snake didn’t stop spilling out…not until two heads popped out and the redhead found himself staring at one of the heads, his eyes slowly squinting a little bit and he lowered his body.

Quickly Takeo’s eyes tried to find where the other head was facing and noticed that it was pointed at Tetsumi. This wasn’t looking good…not at all. And with the way that the snake’s tail danced over the spore vents, he knew that he and their guide were going to have issues. Tetsumi had her kikai to help her out, Hitomi had the gas mask…they’d be fine from the spores…so maybe he should try and lure the snake away…maybe using the mushroom as an aid for that.

”Taisuke… we need to go…now. We need to draw the snake away…the two girls will be fine with the spores from the mushrooms for now.” Takeo began to step away, moving his hands from his sword and thinking about what he should do to draw some attention to himself…all of the attention to himself.

With one head on him…he only had to attract the other one somehow…without putting anyone else at risk. Quickly the redhead’s eyes went to Taisuke before he reached out to grab their guide trying to pull him past and behind him. ”Go…I’ll draw it’s attention.” Takeo honestly didn’t know how fast this snake was but he didn’t have a whole lot of time to try and figure it out.

Takeo made sure that one of the heads was still following him as he performed a series of hand seals. He then snapped his finger and near the head that was facing Tetsumi, a large spark erupted. Once he finally…hopefully had the attention of both heads, Takeo turned to move quickly away from the mushrooms, not wanting to fight this thing around the threat of floating dangerous spores.

”Just run, Taisuke.”

It's just the Forest of Death... it's just the Forest of Death... it's just the Forest of Death...

Hitomi had to tell herself that this ginormous freaky reptile was totally expected. This was exactly the type of thing that might happen back home in the middle of the infamous Forest of Death, right? Since when were snakes that big? Growing multiple heads? So angry and threatening just because someone was trying to pass by? In order to keep her wits about her, the Nara had to ignore the rampant impossibilities staring her in the face and force herself to react.

Carefully, she stepped backwards keeping tabs on the other members of her party, hoping that she wasn't about to get her face ripped off by a cold-blooded freak of nature at any moment. The kunoichi pondered binding the creature with her shadow, but then she wouldn't be able to get away from it and her technique wouldn't last forever. While everyone would be able to get away, she was assuredly going to die for the effort.

Were these people worth that? Probably not. Maybe. Not yet, at least. Taking three steps into the jungle was hardly the time to give up, in Hitomi's opinion.

The teen determined it best to acquiesce to Takeo's wishes and get the hell out of the way. As she turned, she fished around in her pack for the kunai she kept handy with explosives wrapped around the handle. She slowed, allowing Taisuke the opportunity to move past her towards Takeo and Tetsumi. Hitomi turned on her heel suddenly and whipped her arms outward, sending the two kunai flying, knowing that her aim was true and hoping that she had enough strength to penetrate the scales of the creature. She intended for the kunai to lodge just below the jaws on each head. She wasn't ready to detonate because she didn't want to be showered with mushroom death spores of doom, but if they could get away far enough, she didn't have much issue with igniting the tags as needed.

Tetsumi used the brief distraction Takeo gave her to draw three more projectiles. She focused her chakra on them as Hitomi made her attack, two daggers wrapped in explosive tags. Clever, Tetsumi thought. "Run like hell," she said, and threw her handful of kunai.

Go Kadogateru no Tesaki. The kunai whizzed toward the snake in a dazzling display of acrobatics, twisting around each other and weaving down and up as to be as visible as possible. Tetsumi felt the sweat bead on her forehead from the effort of drawing their flight out; she took careful steps backwards as she worked, using the perfect memory of the kikai arranged around her head to avoid the smaller patches of mushrooms and the rotting debris. She flicked one finger up abruptly, sending a single kunai flying towards the far head's eyes. The other four followed in rapid succession, flicking towards both of the heads. Tetsumi didn't expect any to hit; she just needed to buy time for her teammates to get the fuck out of range.

Like you really should have been doing. Ah hell, time to run. The Aburame turned the second the last projectile was out of her control, running after their guide and her teammates. Her mind was still on the kunai she had unleashed; there was still more she could do. Now? she wondered, and would have allowed herself a peek over her shoulder, but the point was moot. Tetsumi needed a minute to gather her chakra before she could complete the Kurugane Fuushuku technique. Besides, with Hitomi's explosives in place, Tetsumi wasn't certain she would need to bother.

I don't need you t-

Taisuke raised his arm up over his face as fire exploded around the snake, which reared up with a mad hiss. The serpent thrashed and its tail knocked against the larger mushrooms – they shook, shuddered, and then released clouds of yellow spores thick they looked like a rolling fog. Taisuke clicked his tongue, then buried his mouth and nose in the elbow of his robe and hurried forward through the rot. As the snake turned one head toward him to stop the samurai from escaping, the other caught sight of the kunai whirring around its head.

With a snap of its jaws, it knocked one of the knives out of the air, but the others sunk into its scales. Daggers sticking from its flesh, the twin-headed snake hissed and slithered forward across the ground, crushing mushrooms beneath the single muscle of its body. The yellow spores floated up and around it and soon the entire rotted grove was hazy with a fine, dry mist. The snake's nostrils squeezed shut to protect it and false eyelids slid over all four of its fist-sized eyes. Both pairs of fangs dropped down as the snake lashed out at Takeo, venom dripping from its teeth. The ground beneath it sizzled where the poison flecked over the soil.

Get out of there!

Taisuke called from the far side of the rot before lifting his sleeve over his face again. Spores clung to him like dust and he coughed once, but didn't seem in danger of dropping. He stepped further out of the rot and back into the jungle proper, waving one hand over his head so the shinobi could keep sight of him.

As soon as Takeo noticed that he had the snakes attention he went through another series of hand seals. He knew that before long pollen would fill the air and he’d have to figure out a way to combat it from getting into his system. After the series of hand symbols were finished a cloak of fire washed over the Chuunin, blocking and igniting any of the airborne pollen that was flying his way.

Everyone was running his direction which was good but he wanted to make sure he was going to be one of the last ones out of the rot. Something else about it didn’t seem right to him and he’d be damned if he was leaving anyone behind. The redhead turned and dodged out of the way as the snake’s fangs came bearing towards him and he knew that it was time for him to go. The cloak around him began to fade away but instead of dissipating completely, it concentrated on his shoulders, providing him a speed boost to catch up to the rest of the group.

His eyes caught Taisuke’s arm waving in the air and he began to run in that direction. Once they were in the forest and away from the mushrooms, the fight would be a lot easier, but with how long the snake was, there was no telling about what exactly could happen.

Once Takeo was in the clear of the marshy area, he turned to see if the snake was still chasing, his hand moving to the hilt of his sword. He’d need to be ready to turn and lash out should things go south, and they really did look like it was going that direction quickly.

”See things like this often?”

"Nope... time to go." Hitomi was not thrilled to see and hear what the venom of the monstrosity could do. If she managed to be hit with that corrosive liquid, Bitch Doctor would never let her live it down... if she lived at all.

The teen scurried carefully away, trying to disturb as few mushrooms as possible. Her efforts certainly weren't helping to maintain air quality, mind you, as the snake crushed countless mushrooms and sent copious amounts of poisonous death spores of doom billowing into the air, but she wasn't trying to make it any worse. Even though Hitomi had a tiny bit more assurance in her safety due to the breathing apparatus lent to her by the Aburame, she didn't want to take the chance of lingering in the area too long.

The oversized serpent was thrashing and injured, launching itself after Takeo, and generally causing a nightmarish ruckus. The Nara's new focus was now to get out of the range of the cloud of terror and not get crushed while doing so. She followed after Taisuke's waving arm and beyond the rot.

She shook herself of the death dust and brushed it from her clothes. "So that's the kind of stupid bullshit we have to watch for here. Good to know, I guess."

Once she was satisfied with having removed a majority of the doom spores from her person, she addressed Taisuke. "You okay? Where we come from, we pretty much kill that kind of crap on sight. Sorry if that's not what we're supposed to do."

She looked back at the yellowish cloud and the scaly beast within and wondered to herself. "Why was that the only fucking thing living in that tiny wasteland? Gross."

Tetsumi didn't have a chance in hell of avoiding the spores rolling towards her, so she didn't try. The cloud hit her like a sledgehammer. The caste of kikai in charge of her body's well-being clicked their metaphorical tongues at the influx of toxin; she could feel their disapproval even as they moved to filter her lungs. "Thanks," Tetsumi told them, crouching in the yellow mist. She couldn't see the serpent, meaning it—they?—couldn't see her. We should make sure it can't see anyone. "Two groups, get the eyes. Blind him—cover and destroy."

She moved quietly through the spore cloud, again relying on her kikai's memory of the area. Abruptly, the air cleared—relatively speaking. Tetsumi could see Taisuke at the edge of the rot, with Hitomi crouching nearby and Takeo ready to draw his sword. The Aburame turned her eyes back to the serpent; she could see her kikai closing in on his eyes, all four of them. Time to move. Tetsumi gestured at her teammates silently, urging them to move while the snake was, ideally, occupied.

The chuunin herself, in the mind that what damage there was to be inflicted had already been done, took a leaf from Hitomi's book and hurried across the clearing as silently as she could, heedless of the smaller mushrooms. Her kikai relaxed the moment she stepped back under the cover of the trees. Sorry, guys, she thought, turning back to look at those kikai still hard at work against the mutation. Make it through, and I won't step foot in another of these Rotted Woods.

She glanced at her teammates and guide, ensuring they were all okay, before her lips quirked up. "I didn't know you used a sword," Tetsumi murmured. She grinned at Takeo. "Was I so bad at hand-to-hand that you didn't bother bringing it when we sparred?" The answer was undoubtedly yes, but the Aburame wasn't bothered. Her eyes drifted back towards her kikai.
