Moko suggested the use of a fire alarm. It wasn’t an idea that Taichi hadn’t considered, but he was still debating the pros and cons of that plan with himself but at the end the mercenary had to come to terms with a fact that he didn’t like; there was no possibility of a low risk plan and things were likely to get sloppy. That was a kind of job that Taichi normally wouldn’t have involved himself with such a heist, but the financial reward involved with that scroll was potentially astronomical.

You heard the man, Yoi.” Taro gave his approval on the latest version of their plan. “Make it happen.

Taichi backed away from the target and started browsing the less significant scrolls from the previous room but he didn't have time to see much since Yoi acted quickly and the alarms started ringing loudly. In less than a minute people started to leave while the staff lead a proper evacuation. However, the man in the surveillance room maintained his position. He kept his eyes glued to the screen and seemed to be barking orders into a walkie talkie. He seemed distracted enough to not notice the missing nin stealing the scroll, but Taichi wasn’t sure if that was the right move. He preferred taking out the watchman..

“Garbage can on fire.” Yoi updated the team. “Your turn now.”

Taichi was unarmed due to the need of passing through security so he walked up towards a small coffee table that stood on one leg and picked it up. The mercenary was a very strong man, capable of unleashing massive amounts of brute force and so he threw that table with all his might towards the guard facing the computer. The table collided with the glass and the wooden object was broken into pieces while the glass didn’t even suffer a scratch. It was heavily reinforced and all Taro managed to do was frighten the man with the bang and reveal himself..

Ah, shit…

The guard got a good look at the missing nin and then left his post to investigate further or to protect himself. It didn’t matter anyway, as long as the cameras with unattended for a little while at least. The former grass shinobi walked up to the wooden case and shattered it with his fist since there was no more time for subtleties. He pocketed the scroll and left the room, back into the empty one. He knew that he didn’t have much time before a small army showed up so he acted quickly. Taichi performed henge, turning himself into a pale, short haired blonde man in his twenties, dressed in the guards’ uniform. He also gave himself a bloody nose and a scratch near his right eye. With that disguise he lied down against the wall to the side of the room.

I had to improvise. I’m disguised as an injured guard now.” Taro updated the group. "Once the guards get to me detonate the tags. They'll quickly realize I'm not one of them so I'll need a distraction before then."

It didn't take long for Taichi's minion to do her part. When the alarm sounded, Moko couldn't help but smile. This was going to speed up, but it was also going to get a lot more dangerous. If he didn't have confidence in Taichi's ability to protect himself, and their prize, he would have been more worried. Instead he watched as the tour guide and staff started to organize.

"Everyone, please, head to the exits. There is a fire in the building." The tour guide tried to talk over the crowd, which was now confused between the violent scene from a moment ago and now the alarm. Likely more than a few had a suspicion something more was happening, but there was nothing to do but try to leave.

Moko put on an alarmed look, and got lined up with the rest of the crowd being shuffled out. He made sure he was last though, so he could keep his eyes open.

More and more guards, plenty samurai, were swarming into the room and heading toward the next one. "You've a lot a' company on the way," Moko mentioned.

Others were looking, for something, or someone. The man at the cameras had to know there were multiples of them. Were they trying to find Yoi and him? He couldn't just leave, he was going to make sure Taichi and Yoi made it out. But he was going to have to use the chaos, or suffer.

By his guess, the guards were getting into the next room now, they had to be to Taichi. He hit his release seal, "Kai."

The explosion shook the next room, and one of the guards was thrown off his feet as the item he confiscated from the man earlier exploded in his hands. There were successive screams of panic, and Moko fell to the ground as the rest of the room did.

"Everyone stay calm!" Came the shouts from the samurai.

"Yoi, you might have some looking for you too." Moko said as he laid flat on the ground.

"Everyone out, single file!" Another of the samurai said, "Please, hurry."

They were shocked, but that was the problem with samurai. They were all trained to be 'stoic' and in control, so even in a situation like this their actions were annoyingly 'cool'. He was going to have to leave with the others being escorted out of the smoke and chaos of the room.

"Taichi," He whispered over comm, "I'm following the group out for the moment. But I doubt they will let me get far."

Taichi was a little too late to realize that something had uncharacteristically slipped his mind. He hoped to be safe using his disguise but that plan failed to take into account Yoi’s safety. The man behind the screen knew what Taichi looked like and if he was paying attention to the feed on his screen he would have been? capable of identifying Yoi as the thief's partner. Needless to say things weren't going exactly as planned and such a clusterfuck made Taro consider resigning from field duties. Delegating the risky parts would have been? better for peace of mind.

Taichi felt the urge to perform a shunshin escape. It was very tempting but it wasn't enough to get him to the port. He needed to leave the city and cover some distance before, since it just wasn't possible to repeatedly perform shunshin in quick succession. It would have gotten him out of the vicinity and immediate danger but not to safety.

“They’re on to me!” Yoi plead.

The mercenary normally cared for the safety of his team and the mission’s success. He wasn’t normally one to sell out a colleague but desperate times called for desperate measures. The man needed a distraction to make a clean escape and he obviously placed his own safety above Yoi’s. She already was already a suspect in the heist and her chances of leaving unscathed turned very slim by that point so the former grass nin decided to take advantage of that.

Make a run for it. We’ll come get you later.” It wasn’t completely a lie. Taichi did plan on pulling off a rescue for her later once things settled down if it was viable at the time, but first he needed her to draw away some of the guards and samurai away from him.

The mercenary could hear that Yoi had caused a scene but he couldn’t tell what was going on exactly but two guards and a samurai still showed up to where Taichi was. They approached him and the guards seemed genuinely concerned, not realizing that he wasn’t one of them. It seemed that the amount of guards employed there didn’t allow them to all recognize each other.

“Are you ok?” One of the guards asked. “Where’s the thief?”

I… I don’t know.” Taichi did his best to seem dazed and disoriented. “I think I need a medic. I don’t feel right. Can you help me get up?

The two guards quickly immediately went to Taichi’s side and allowed him to rest his arm across their respective shoulders. They helped him get up while the samurai turned around, uninterested in an injured guard; he was there to fight a criminal. As soon as the samurai turned around, Taichi wrapped his arms around both guards simultaneously and squeezed hard. Even by shinobi standards Taichi was physically a beast and so their necks were crushed in an instant from that position and just as the samurai started to turn around Taichi charged at him with a fist to the gut to knock his breath out, preventing him from yelling for help and then Taro grabbed him in a choke hold under his armpit and gave him a similar treatment to the previous two men. Samurai were definitely not pushovers, but the former grass nin was rather powerful and managed to catch him by surprise.

Taichi then quickly leaned towards the closer guard’s corpse and performed a medical technique on him, giving him a different face, Taichi’s face. The missing nin then went to a large display table and slammed it against the wall, causing a loud bang. He then leaned against the wall and started breathing heavily, putting on a display as if a fight had just happened.

"Yoi?" He called into his comm, hoping for a reassuring answer now that he was safe, but there was no reply.

Moko walked along with the others, and as they moved into the next exhibit he could see exactly what he was afraid of. The exhibit where they had more tags, the walls were crumbled, and lights was coming in from the collapsed roof. There was a guard making sure everyone stayed in a single-file line, but beyond that were multiple samurai in armor, their hands on their katana and ready to fight.

Taro was calling out for Yoi, he could hear it in his ear. Was it possible they got to her too? This mission was falling apart, and Moko didn't like it one bit. He had a trump card in case this got worse, but with so many enemies around, he didn't know how difficult he wanted to make this. Was it worth going back for a girl he only just met? She was Taichi's accomplice after all.

"They must have her," Moko said under his breath, his turn in the check line coming up. He was sure he could get past if he played it cool, just stayed with the civilians. But what if the other missing-nin didn't honor his half of the deal once Yoi died? That was always a possibility. Plus, she wasn't bad looking.

"I'm going to go loud, distract them. See if you can recover her and we'll all escape."

He was going to regret this.

"Sir, you're next." The guard motioned for him to step forward.

Moko smiled at the guard, and took a step forward. All the samurai eyeing him as he walked toward the makeshift security check.

"Give us your name, please," The guard said.

Moko let out a sigh about as exhausted as he really felt, "Is this really necessary? Aren't we under attack?"

"Sir, please. Make this quick so we can get everyone to safety."

"Okay, okay," Moko said with his hands up. Then he brought them together to make a seal, "Quick it is."

The samurai were fast, but it didn't matter. In a flash of hand seals, the room poofed with more and more copies of Moko. The blade of a samurai flashed through his gut, but it poofed into smoke. As soon as the dozen or so Moko were in place, they tossed out explosive tags around the room and detonated them in a series of explosives that rocked the already wrecked room. Smoke and chaos filled the room again, people screaming and falling over themselves to escape. They ran in every direction they could manage, including a few going back toward the hall where Yoi hid in her bathroom.

It was rather unfortunate that the two missing nin didn’t really have their plans in sync despite all the planning that happened earlier, but when the two had to improvise each one was doing it by himself. While Taichi was trying to be subtle and get away cleanly, Moko seemed to have a different idea in mind. It seemed that Moko acted with a sense of urgency due to Yoi being missing in action. The whole building was rocked with multiple blasts, creating mass confusion, plenty of injuries and a forced change of plan.

I’m the one with the bloody nose.” Taichi revealed to his teammate. “Play along with me and put up a fight. I’ll patch you up later.

Being disguised as one of the guards Taichi had to play the role to blend in. He no longer was the injured guard requiring medical attention but instead he became the dutiful one, trying to find the culprit and take him into custody. He walked into the room and spotted Moko in the midst of the clearing smoke. It was time to put on an act.

Hey!” He yelled at Moko so that he would take a good look at the guard disguise and identify him.

Taro then ran towards Moko and performed a jumping tackle in order to knock him down onto the floor. Moko barely reacted and took the hit. As a result, Taichi had him pinned down underneath him and ready to deliver a beating. The taijutsu specialist then started throwing half-assed punches at Moko’s face and upper torso. Taichi had enough strength behind his fists to hurt his partner but not quite enough to cause any damage that he wouldn’t be able to heal later on. It needed to look real after all.

The chaos around the museum was perfect, Moko could hear visitors screaming for help, see guards confused and forced to make hard choices. It was going to work, they were going to get out anyway. He just needed to get to Yoi and Taro so they could escape.

The samurai in the exhibits started to cut down the clones. They put up a fight as best they could, some using kawarimi, or disguising themselves with henge, but the samurai were merciless in hunting them down.

In the next room, Taro identified Moko entering the room. Moko squared up, but even if he did want to resist the other missing-nin he didn't stand much of a chance. This would have been one of those 'trickery' moments. Instead he was tackled, and while Moko put his arms up to defend himself, he took blow after blow.

"Keep him down!" Shouted one of the guards, "We're getting everyone out, and we've got the other one."

While it was hard to feel smug while being pummeled, it was good to know they only thought there were two of them. But Moko would have rather spent this time trying to get to Yoi. Maybe Taro didn't want to save her after all, which was his own choice in the end.

"I yield, I yield!" Moko shouted between punches, putting his hands up.

They needed to move along. Whatever Taro's plan was, Moko didn't need to be on the ground getting beat for too long.

An older samurai entered the room, and looked down at the scene. He was stern, but not dismissive. He pointed to Taro in disguise and said, "Good work, pack him up and prepare to turn him over. Once we have them both secured, we can get them out of here."

Then the samurai pointed to one of the other guards, "Now lead me to the other one."

It was almost as if the stars finally aligned. The day wasn’t going smoothly at all, but when Taichi ‘attacked’ his partner things were starting to go as planned. The elder samurai that showed up asked the group to take Moko to the other captive, which Taichi assumed was his female companion. That course of events was one thing that the mercenary hoped would happen, but he wasn’t even sure if it was possible.

The samurai cuffed Moko and got him up to walk him to wherever it was they were taking him and Taro was intent on tagging along, whether his guard disguise belonged there or not. Right then he was the man of the hour for taking down Moko so he had to use that temporary status to his favor. So he walked right behind the samurai as they escorted Moko.

I’m seeing this through.” The disguised missing nin stated to his ‘colleagues’. “Taking some of the credit for this will be good for my career.” After a few looks between the samurai and a few whispers, they seemed to be fine with the hero tagging along. Taichi followed them as they escorted Moko to where Yoi was held. The ship captain saw that his crew mate was fine, although a little beaten.

-----

A small squad escorted Yoi, Moko and the dead body that was made to look like Taichi. They took them about a mile outside the city of kings and then they turned to Taichi. They didn’t want him following them around any longer.

“You’ve had your moment of glory. The public saw you escorting them with us.” He felt like he was being dumped. “You don’t get to follow us any further. Please turn back now.”

The missing nin took a look around. The place was secluded and away from civilization, which meant that backup for the samurai wasn’t within reach. There were five samurai in total which meant that the odds were not in Taichi’s favor, especially that his specialties rested in armed taijutsu styles. Although the fight would have been a simple one if Moko and Yoi were to free themselves from the cuffs and participate.

Best chance I’ll ever get.

The hulk of a man pushed away the closest samurai, knocking him on the floor and grabbed the bracelet parts of Moko’s handcuffs and then using all his might, he pulled the two pieces in opposite directions, breaking the chain with some considerable effort. Moko was a former jounin, which meant that he was more important to the battle than Yoi was and so the mercenary set his priorities..
