Default Death Note- If Kira Were Real

I know that some people do not like "What If" type of scenario's and that they are pointless, as they are only "What If's". I like them and I have an interesting one to pose to the populace of Engi. This idea was sparked as I started watching the live action Death Note movie, which at the moment, is alright. I thought to myself, if there was really such a being as Kira in our existence, how would the people of Earth react. Would we bow down before him/her and let the living death god lay waste to the wicked, or would we stand against him and search out his identity to punish him.

I think this would be an interesting topic and would like to see what everyone has to say about this topic.

My opinion- I'm not quite sure which side I would be on. I can't say I'm against the killing of the wicked and I could see it severly dropping the crime rate world wide. I mean, who wouldn't be afraid of someone who could kill you just by knowing your name and face. The problem with that person is, would they let themselves become drunk off of that power, starting to kill people just because he/she doesn't like them or for personal gain. So what does everyone else think?

We'd search his out. And because this isn't an anime, as long as the dude wasn't a freaking idiot, he'd never be caught. We'd go on, forgetting about it, accepting it as a standard of life. Cults would form and people would discuss it over dinner. 'Oh, that Kira. Disgusting.' 'What? He's doing good!'

IF it really happened, there wouldn't be much we could do about it.

If Kira was real.*

Kira is a name for a single person, therefore it is not plural.

I agree with Mizu on this one. It's quite easy to be anonymous when no one knows what you look like and you can kill anyone as long as you know their face. There is no real life L who can pinpoint a mass murder's general location in a matter of days, such detective work would be impossible to figure out. Not only that, but who would be dumb enough to stay in the same area for a long period of time if you're killing people off? Ridiculous.

@Kaen
Nice grammar check, but that relatively off topic. That counts as spam right? Lolz.

Kaen Edit: Is it really now?

My Edit: Oh ya, most def.

Ya Mizu pretty much pinned this one on the money. As much as people would try to stop him (CIA, Police, FBI, Army, etc.) it wouldn't happen for a long time. The guy would waltz in, start by killing the wicked, but go insane/power hungry, and try to take over the world. He would have many followers, but once he set up a stronghold it would be destroyed.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. However if there really was a real life "Kira", I don't think that it would necessarily mean that it would be the same as Light Yagami's "Kira".

On the other hand if it were the same as Yagami's "Kira" then a play with ethics would immediately come to mind, after all; the ability to choose if a person lives or dies is the same power of a judge. If you question that power, you are not only questioning the authority of "Kira" but also of the Judges in the past who have decided (when no jury was involved) of the guiltiness and punishment of those criminals.

Unless one not so much as "follows" Kira, but instead just "agrees" with him/her, then that should be fine and you wouldn't really have to go through the overly tiring prospect of having to deny the power of the judicial court and then you'd naturally be going against capital punishment and the likes.

Like I said before; it's a simple game of ethics.

The problem with killing the wicked is after the obvious murderers and extreme criminals are killed, it could get subjective who the "evil" are that deserve to be targeted. Me or you could very easily be killed. Mikami was getting dangerously close to this when he wanted to kill people for nothing more than being lazy or unproductive.

There's also the issue created by heirs. Everybody's gotta die sometime, even self proclaimed gods. And even if the first Kira only went up against the really sinful (religious connotations notwithstanding) people, who knows what the second Kira might do? Sooner or later everything would spiral out of control entirely.

This is what I think:

If a person like Kira existed. I think the World would be on it's toes. I imagine something similar to the Red Scare where people go around accusing people blindly without evidence because the idea that someone could kill you with a name and a face would put anyone whose done any wrong - simple, or complex is pretty heavy.

On that note, that anonymity factor that someone said earlier could go both ways. Kira would not know who would be hunting him down and access to that information (although wouldn't be too hard) isn't always readily available. They could all be traced to a location and such. Not to mention a Kira would face an incredible pressure of being caught that it may force a slip or two...and what may have been a world wide panic would sizzle down to a single incident.

I'm sure the world would interpret the situation differently. Some would welcome it. Some would go against it. Many would be indifferent. Then there are those who would seek him out because they want power or that power. And whether Kira realizes it or not he would be facing people from all fronts.

I agree, and anyway, religious or not, no man can really measure up to the theory of a god. Kira would be human, and so subject to human flaws and faults. And yeah, he wouldn't live forever.
