  • Mayeda Shizuko - ANBU Ookami

This character has been edited with a blessing and 4GMAP from Hyuuga Kaito.

    Name: Mayeda Shizuko
    Age: 20
    Sex: Female
    Height: 5’ 6”

    Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Country of Fire, Village Hidden in the Leaves
    Rank: Jounin
    Division: ANBU: Ookami (Wolf) [Omoi]

Physical Description: Overall, the appearance of Shizuko is rather unremarkable. Her dark locks fall straight, just past her shoulders, though it would be somewhat difficult to estimate its length due to the ponytail which often holds the bulk of it away from her face. Her complexion would likely be classified as fair, though she is yet far from pale. A hint of rosy pink graces her cheeks and lips most of the time. Generally, she would be described as attractive, in a “girl next door” sense.

Shizuko’s build is lean but athletic, and though she is of average height, it seems as though she is rather small. The manner in which she often stands, with her face tilted downwards and hands folded behind her back or in front of her body, makes her shrink into the background. When she speaks, she often avoids eye contact; a habit she learned long ago which she is still struggling to break. She learned in her youth that most people caught in her steel gray gaze feel uneasy, so she managed to circumvent the problem by evading the eyes of others. This cold stare is really the only notable outward trait Shizuko possesses, and it affects many aspects of her appearance and behavior.

Clothing: Shizuko sports very simple clothing. Day to day, she typically chooses to dress in layers in order to be ready for just about anything. Most often she prefers tops cut in a halter style, with fitted black pants to compliment them. The woman prefers solid colors and minimal adornments or patterns, and sometimes wears a long overcoat over it all. Her hands are covered with black gloves and her feet with standard black sandals. Her Leaf Village forehead protector is tied to the upper portion of her right arm, thus drawing attention away from her face. Her ears have several small silver cuffs, rings, and studs lining their outer edges.

In missions of great importance, Shizuko will proudly don the garb of Konohagakure’s finest. A signature gray vest layered atop a black, fitted body suit and black pants combined with the easily recognizable white mask of an ANBU operative attest to her position within the Village. A standard-issue ANBU sword is also strapped to her back, though it would be surprising if she were ever to draw it. Shizuko places more importance on the pouches strapped to her belt and leg, concealing a good many projectiles and supplies.

Personality: The first impression one would have of Shizuko is that she is quiet and reserved, though this is not the most accurate description of her true character. She remains calm and silent much of the time to draw attention away from herself. This gives her an advantage in her genjutsu tactics as well as making it less likely that she’ll make anyone uncomfortable unintentionally.

Her true personality would be described as that of a good friend, being very kind and loyal. She would do anything for the good of her comrades or her Village, even if it meant giving up her own life. She serves as a good listener and a dependable shoulder to cry on, though she does not often share her own deepest thoughts or feelings.

Shizuko’s method of thinking is very logical and clear, as would be expected of a specialist of her sort. Her experiences in the field have taught her that remaining calm and rationalizing her situation is the key to proper reaction and thus, success. She makes no action and says no word without proper reason.

Mayeda Shizuko carries fond memories of her early childhood. She is the offspring of two wonderful, caring people who still reside on a secluded farm not more than a day’s travel from the Hidden Leaf Village. Her father, Kazuo, is a loving man who did not wish to see his only child fight in the realm of the shinobi, however he is proud to support her desire to protect her home. Her mother, Miki, is a beautiful woman who taught her daughter to be poised and always show respect to others.

Even in her infancy Shizuko possessed a signature forceful stare. Baby pictures reveal a child with very cold gray eyes, though a smile often graced her lips. She was a happy adolescent, being raised to help out on her family’s farm. She had common dreams of growing up and being friends with everyone, meeting a boy who would someday sweep her off of her feet, getting married and having her own family. These dreams became skewed as she grew and was introduced to an entirely new world… the world of the shinobi.

Shizuko, living in a secluded area, had few acquaintances outside of her own family. She found a best friend in her cousin Mayeda Nobuko. The girls were only months apart in age and were nearly inseparable. As they played together in their early years, Nobuko described to her fantastic adventures of peril and suspense involving shinobi. Nobuko’s father was once a chuunin in the Hidden Leaf village, long since retired in order to settle into family life peacefully. From then on, the two would play shinobi-inspired games together, pretending trees were enemy ninja and throwing acorn shuriken at their attackers.

Nobuko’s father offered to send her to the Hidden Leaf Village academy to become a real shinobi, since she loved to pretend so much. Nobuko was delighted, and chose to enroll as soon as possible, even though it would mean leaving her home, family, and best friend behind. Shizuko was utterly heartbroken, for her best friend was going leave and become something they had dreamed of for some time. Her desire to join her cousin in school to become the greatest medical shinobi of all time was intense, and as the day drew near for Nobuko’s departure, that constant smile left Shizuko’s face.

As the family bid Nobuko goodbye, a teary-eyed Shizuko noticed a couple of familiar bags intermingled with Nobuko’s possessions. As she glanced toward her own parents, she saw that they, too, had tears in their eyes, for they were bidding her goodbye as well. It was a wonderful surprise that she had not expected, and though she was sad to leave her parents so unexpectedly, she felt as though her heart was going to burst from her chest in excitement about venturing to the Hidden Leaf Village and becoming a real shinobi!

The girls’ early days at the academy were hectic indeed. Nobuko became very popular with their classmates, though the children were not so welcoming of Shizuko. Many of them claimed that they felt strange when she looked at them. Something about her made them uneasy. Of course, as often happens with children and despite the objections of Nobuko, their feelings and comments about her turned darker as time progressed, and she gradually became painfully reserved and avoided eye contact with her peers. Only in the presence of dear Nobuko would she open up again and show her true colors.

Shizuko worked endlessly to progress in the academy. She, like Nobuko, wished to concentrate in medically relevant techniques just as her uncle had excelled. Nobuko naturally did very well in such training, while Shizuko had to work very hard and progressed more slowly than her cousin. A great feeling of disappointment welled up in her heart over her difficulties. It was not until her class began learning the basics of various genjutsu techniques that Shizuko stood out among the students. It was a turning point for her, and also a point of powerful ridicule from her classmates.

As the children practiced genjutsu, it was obvious that such skills came very naturally to Shizuko. Since the only way to practice them was to put them to use on one another, the children learned to be very afraid of Shizuko. It was during practice of these skills that she allowed her eyes to meet those of her classmates, and the uneasiness in their psyche turned to terror as she unleashed far more potent results than any of the other students could muster. Her reputation for being strange and scary intensified as academy graduation approached.

Shizuko and Nobuko were separated after graduation, having been placed in different groups. Shizuko’s genin years were relatively unremarkable, though she continued to put hard work into her physical combat skills and strived to master ninjutsu. Still, her abilities with genjutsu outshined her other skills, and her techniques became more potent and terrifying to opponents.

Her teammates found her presence useful at times, because being the child of farmers meant that she could remove weeds from a garden like no one else! Though the genin missions were simple and served as a method to help the team bond, Shizuko felt no such close relations with her teammates. They seemed to leave her to her own devices when her skills were not needed. She found out some time later that they didn’t trust her because they felt anxious around her and thought she might have already caught them in one of her potent genjutsu techniques.

Shizuko managed to move up to chuunin level in her second attempt at the chuunin exams. Nobuko had already been promoted to chuunin six months before her and was already becoming actively involved with the medical ninja squads. The two reunited and worked together in the hospital as well as in the field. Nobuko focused on physical healing while Shizuko became more familiar with psychological injuries and the effects of shinobi life upon the psyche.

There came a tumultuous time in which Shizuko and Nobuko were sent out together with a team on a mission to deliver an important message from the elders in the Hidden Leaf Village. It appeared to be a fairly simple task, but along the way to their destination, an unknown assailant struck the team from the shadows. He was a well-trained shinobi, bearing a scarred symbol from Wind Country. He emerged from the shade under a twilight sky as he struck down one member of Shizuko’s team using shuriken and kunai. As Nobuko rushed to lend aid to their companion and Shizuko lashed out at the assailant with well-aimed knives, the enemy’s attack turned toward the medical nin.

In a split second which felt like the passing of a thousand years, Shizuko’s best friend was slain in front of her eyes. She hadn’t even been given the chance to give her cousin a warning. It was a moment that changed Shizuko forever.

The only fortunate part of that fateful mission was that Shizuko survived, albeit barely so. She lost her teammates in the blink of an eye and from time to time even now she wonders if she should have suffered the same fate. She was, however, saved by savvy Leaf scouts who had heard rumor of the recently defected shinobi’s whereabouts as well as trackers from Wind country who arrived in search of the same prey. Had they not arrived when they did, Shizuko surely would have been slain by the traitor and his accomplice who had remained hidden during the strike against the chuunin’s teammates. At their arrival, it was not Shizuko who cried out in agony and terror, it was her attackers, held in place by some unseen phantoms. The traumatized girl had given the pair quite a fight though she sustained a fair amount of damage. She stood, silent, still and spattered with her own blood, watching her opponents suffer with wild eyes. Fate had determined that it was not her time to die.

The weeks that followed were long indeed. Her family offered to bring her home so that she could lead a peaceful life in the country, for it was obvious that the world of the shinobi was not at all what she had anticipated all those years ago when she and Nobuko were young. Shizuko spent quite a bit of time searching her own soul, mind, and heart. In the end, she felt it best to continue, because it’s what Nobuko would have wanted her to do. Shizuko and her cousin had one goal: to protect their home country. There was no better way to do that, in her mind, than to work harder and become a better shinobi.

One thing that Shizuko came to understand very well, given her traumatic experience, was the effect of pain on the body and mind. Her time working in the hospital with Nobuko, her many missions at home and abroad, and now her own familiarity with its power led her to understand that pain was one of the most influential tools one could use to manipulate a person. It was knowledge that she began putting to work in her training immediately after she recovered from that fateful mission.

Once Shizuko was able to embrace her natural skills in genjutsu and put them to use in combination with her newly attained understanding of pain, her reputation began to grow within the Village. This was not necessarily a good thing, however. The mystery surrounding her team’s demise and why she was the only one to survive led to rumors among the villagers. The stories began to grow and magnify into crazy tales of demon transformation and making the brains of armies of missing nin explode from the inside. Of course the higher-ranking Leaf shinobi and those who worked with her regularly knew that this was not the case, but the villagers loved a wild, dramatic story.

She began to hold her head a little higher, for she had become more confident with her skills as time and missions passed. She finally figured out that people will think what they think about her, and the only way they’ll be proven wrong is to deal with her person to person. There would be no reason to concern herself with what her comrades’ opinions any longer. She would protect them anyway, for even though they showed her little appreciation, she loved them and would offer up her life to save them if given the opportunity.

Developing confidence, perfection of tactics, and arduous study served Shizuko well in the months following Nobuko’s death. She was not the only one to realize that her skills in genjutsu had intensified in addition to her other training to become a well-rounded shinobi. Understanding of the human psyche and behavior combined with proper jutsu and incredible observation abilities were indeed the perfect cocktail for a rare breed of specialist… the jounin interrogator.

There came a time when the young kunoichi’s most notable mission was no longer a tale of incredible failure, but one of remarkable, though understated, triumph. Her assignment had been to investigate some shady activity that had been happening on the outskirts of the town of Atsumi. It had been reported that a small group had begun showing signs of engaging in gang or mob type of movement. Posing a threat to one of the Fire Country’s most affluent areas, Konohagakure sent Shizuko and a chuunin comrade to gather information on the group.

Shizuko took the lead on the mission, though her job was to provide crowd control in case things got out of hand. Her chuunin companion specialized in espionage and had assigned to blend in and observe as closely as required. Things were going quite well and according to plan, or so it seemed until Shizuko spied her chuunin teammate being surrounded by a few too many of the renegade group. It seemed that they had somehow caught on to the chuunin’s disguise and were signaling to one another when Shizuko’s companion wasn’t looking.

Memories flooded back to the kunoichi in that split second when she’d decided to act. She recalled the horror of watching her teammates die while she helplessly looked on. In the seconds that followed, her footsteps were fueled with determination to keep her comrade alive at all costs. She would not allow another to die while she could still act.

Shizuko blazed into the fray which was only just about to begin. She launched accurately placed senbon into a pair of the weaker opponents while making her way to the more imposing enemies. Her genjutsu quickly took hold of two others while she made her appearance at her chuunin companion’s side. The two fought back to back for a moment before Shizuko shifted her attention to the leader of the group and his large bodyguard. A chakra-infused blow to the chest sent the bodyguard reeling and stumbling away from his superior. In a flash, the woman had found her way behind the boss and wrapped her arms around him. It was obvious that he was in a fair amount of pain while being held in her grasp, and thus he was willing to hear the kunoichi’s forceful but quiet words in his ear as he watched the chuunin dispatch more of the opposition.

In the end, Shizuko and her chuunin teammate returned to Konohagakure unharmed. Not only that, they had gathered the relevant information for which they’d been sent and more, thanks to the “cooperation” of the group’s leader. It turned out that this group had been but one cell of a larger organization quietly working under the nose the prosperous village. Coincidentally, the leader of the group had opted to leave the area and return to his home country after his first and only encounter with the genjutsu specialist.

As expected, some of Konohakure’s top operatives were sent out to deal with the newly unveiled (and larger) problem plaguing the Fire Country’s largest port city. The success of Shizuko and her chuunin partner did not go unnoticed, as understated as it may have been. It was no topic of discussion and speculation like her life changing chuunin had been, but it did serve well to showcase the kunoichi’s ability to extract information from even the most resistant of targets with minimal effort, which caught the eye of a select few in search of that type of talent.

It was a representative of Konohagakure’s most prestigious task force who had taken notice of Shizuko’s blooming talents in an area seldom chosen by the common shinobi. Torture and interrogation were hardly specializations for those easily susceptible to emotion, as in their most basic sense, they cause intense suffering without the relief of death. Shizuko’s logical, scientific approach was ideal for the task and had been observed and noted for future reference by ANBU.

She’d managed to slip under the radar during her genin and earlier chuunin years while her peers were being scrutinized for their potential in serving as one of the elite in the Leaf Village. It was her life-altering experience as a chuunin that brought her name out of the forgotten archives and into consideration as a candidate for ANBU. Her grueling work in perfecting her skills after the ordeal and her promotion to jounin had lent further support to her standing as a possible ANBU operative. Without the kunoichi’s knowledge, her abilities were evaluated and deemed desirable, a feat which attests to the secrecy of ANBU and the manner in which her examination had taken place.

Thus it was, only months after being promoted to jounin that Shizuko began to bear the title of Ookami, the wolf. She accepted the responsibility and high expectations carried with membership of Konohagakure’s legendary ANBU with humble gratitude. Her talents were applied to a fair number of tasks, including guarding the Hokage, executing some of the Village’s most secretive and dangerous missions, and, of course, obtaining information by force when necessary.

Whimsical dreams have diminished substantially in her years as a seasoned shinobi, giving way to a methodical professional with a keen eye for detail. She is no less thankful for the opportunities afforded her, though some may have come at the expense of great personal loss. Nonetheless, serving the Hokage and protecting her home are but some of the honors to which Mayeda Shizuko has devoted her life.

Excellent work. As a matter of clarification, she is recycling the 2GMAP that went to her Roots because we both agreed it'd be NPC'd instead. The other 2AP are from my personal pool.

I think it was Rough who pointed it out. You used 2 jutsu to buy a Special Technique - which still cost 1 even if you're Physical Tertiary. So yeah, you got one more Jutsu available.

Ahh... thank you for pointing that out. Appropriate edits have been made.

          Yay for more ANBU techniques!

          Thanks, everyone.
