  • Asaka Enju / Leaf Chuunin

    NAME: Asaka Enju
    AGE: 16
    SEX: Female
    HEIGHT: 5'6

    COUNTRY/VILLAGE: Hi no Kuni/Konoha
    RANK: Chuunin
    DIVISION: Hada

Enju's eyes - her parents' only gift - are the first thing you would notice about her. It's not because of an intense stare or because of an usual size, but they simply seem to have this sparkle to them - they are the eyes of someone hungry for a greater, fuller life, always searching for the next step forward. Their hazel hues, so bright, look as if they reach into the range of orange and even a hint of red...but that might just be a trick of the light.

The rest of her appearance is that of a normal teenage girl from Konoha. She likes to keep her hair a plain black, without any colouring, and has it hang halfway down her back. Her developmental years as a rambunctious Genin have grown her a lean brawler's frame, ready to go at the drop of a coin. While Enju's hands are a bit worn and rough from having practiced with her katana for hours upon hours, the rest of her body remains unmarred and unmarked by scars or tattoos - a true blessing, given the lifstyle Shinobi tend to lead.

A floral hairpin - its size, colour, and shape vary depend on what Enju is feeling like that day. She nearly always has one tying her hair back into a ponytail. She's quite proud of her hairpin collection and is pleased when somebody compliments her on the pin of the day. Besides what decoration she's using for her hair, the rest of her garb remains rather plain. Standard issue flak jacket, sandals, and navy clothing with the swirl of Konohagakure emblazoned proudly on both sleeves are her garments of choice on regular duty, with her hitai-ate tied firmly around her left bicep and equipment pouch strapped to her right thigh. A sturdy set of darkened shin and arm guards, each engraved with the symbolic leaf of Konohagakure, protect her limbs.

Instead of using the cloth backing of her forehead protector as a Hada signifier, Enju opts to wrap a swath of green ribbon around the hilt and sheath of her katana to seal it shut until she is sure she needs to draw the blade.

At heart, she's a sweet girl. In person...she can be a bit of a handful. Ever since she started living on her own, Enju has been decidedly set on living her life to the fullest. Talk isn't really suited to the speed at which she lives, which is a bit of a shame. If she could slow down enough to reason things out in her mind, people would more often realize how sharp her mind really is. Thankfully, when it comes to high-pressure situations, her brain manages to pierce through her nature and at least provide her with a solid set of instincts. Her "trusty gut feeling", as Enju chooses to refer to it as, has gotten the girl out of many a stick situation in the past...even though she tends to use it as an excuse to get herself into trouble in the first place.

Life can be grand - and when it isn't, all you need to do is punch it into shape!

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.

A dad who was crippled, and a mom who drank their ryo down to the bottom of every last bottle. Asaka Enju spent her days of her childhood lying on the grass, staring at the sky through the branches, wistfully wishing she had real parents. That wasn't completely fair to her father, she supposed, considering before his accident, he always had his nose to the grindstone as a construction worker. He did his best to provide for their three-member unit - it was her mom who was the waste. A waste of good liquor and a waste of good oxygen, Enju's mother's alcoholism had only worsened after her husband's legs were crushed in a site accident. He was never the same after that; he lost his spirit, his fervor for everyday life, and now stared aimlessly out their parlor window day in and day out. Enju never figured out what it was that had sucked the very essence of life out of her father; it had to be something more than the accident. But after his mind left, she couldn't bother to try engaging with him anymore. And she'd already given up on her mother, having long ago determined there wasn't much of a point even thinking about it anymore. It was cruel, then, that she had inherited her mother's eyes and her father's sparkle to them. They served as nothing else but a reminder of what she had to go home to at the end of every day, a captive to her bloodline and conscience - for the latter was the only thing keeping her from abandoning them both. The meager amount of money she earned as the local ramen shop owner's cute little gopher was all that was keeping them afloat, and even then, his kindness only stretched so far as the ink of his bottom line.

Needless to say, Enju was jealous of her friends at the Academy. They never seemed held back by their home life; they came to classes every day with their stomachs full, faces clean, and clothes properly washed and pressed. The only thing Enju had that wasn't blatantly weathered was her favourite red hairpin, given to her by her grandmother before passing. But no matter how pristine her hairpin was, it couldn't help her compete with her classmates. She lingered near the bottom of the rankings and couldn't help but feel if she were lucky enough to be born into a good family, her name would be the one parked at the top of every list. But no, it wasn't hers. It was never hers. It was always the spoiled ones, the lazy ones, the rich ones. The happy ones. Could she really be blamed, then, for lashing out? For fighting back when they taunted her? The strength she had in her fists was all she possessed. It mixed and mingled with the dreams she desperately held on to, and though Enju couldn't help but get into classroom scuffles, she feared that a bit of those dreams seeped out with every punch she threw. Lower and lower she would fall in the minds of her instructors. Straight to the bottom until the bottom was no more and all that was left was the door of her shabby home. That one image was what kept her just barely in line, always that one crucial step from being expelled from the Academy.

And then day broke. The long winter of Enju's childhood was broken by the sweet spring's sigh of...

    ...her parents' death.

Her mom was the first to go by way of alcohol poisoning. Her dad followed shortly; whatever dim light still lurked in his eyes blew out as he fell into a vegetative state and eventually passed on.

But for Enju, after the short moments of sadness had passed, it was a second chance. She could save her own money - her own money! She could buy new clothes, have shoes that weren't riddled with holes. When the vaccuum that was her mom and the anchor that was her dad were gone, Enju understood that it was never her parents that she hated; she hated what it was her parents had represented.

Simply being able to afford actual food greatly improved her performance at the Academy. Her body and her mind were more than just barely supplied, they were being nourished and could grow. And grow she did, both in frame and in reputation. The Academy instructors noted a marked improvement as she went from being in the bottom percentile of the class to hovering near the top fifteen. And though she still had a penchant for a good old fashioned brawl, it was more out of camaraderie than out of spite. Enju graduated from the Academy and propelled herself straight into Genin-dom, and straight into the heart of life. The ramen shop owner let her move into a tiny spare room above his shop for dirt cheap rent, and with the leftover pocket money she received from the odds-and-ends jobs she completed in addition to her team's missions, she began to collect hairpins. The original red one would always be her favourite, but now she could have whichever one caught her eye on the street. Life was going well for Asaka Enju. With the way she now saw the world, not everything was immediately achievable, but nothing was ever impossible. She couldn't believe how some of her fellow Genin would waste golden opportunities, too busy being scared of consequences and of failure. According to her, you just had to buck up and grab whatever it was you wanted, repercussions be damned! You could always deal with the fallout later, but right now only ever lasted for right now, so why not take it why it lasted? So when her team's sensei came to them with the idea of trying out a new fad that was on the rise, Enju was all for it, even when her teammates initially balked. It was a growing trend amongst teams: enter the Forest of Death and come out alive after spending a night deep within its venomous recesses. What would later become the Survival Challenge was the hot new thing - those teams who dared it were admired amongst their peers for their bravery, and the team leaders who successfully navigated a group of Genin through the Forest were lauded amongst their circle of friends.

As for Enju's was a massacre. One red-haired kid lost his left hand, the other budding swordsman exited with a mangled face. Her sensei never ended up losing that limp. She herself had miraculously escaped without permanent bodily harm. Mentally, however, was another question. Though the cuts and scrapes on her skin faded with time, the abrasions in her mind were there to stay - Enju still works to suppress the horrors of that night. Funnily enough, her success in the subsequent Chuunin exams could only be credited to the utter failure in the Forest of Death. Nothing in the exams could faze her, not after watching a giant fire ant leave a bloody stump at the end of her teammate's left arm. She'd been numbed to it all, and the examiners mistook that for a cool head under pressure. She was promoted to Chuunin, and though Enju was certainly capable of that level in terms of skill, she questioned - and still does - whether or not she was ever truly worthy of the rank. The recent episode of werebeasts reaffirmed that self-doubting, as even imagining the mutations invoked the terrors of that night. She immediately put in for Academy duty - dealing with little farts running around was better than facing up with anything that reminded her of the sound her sensei's bones crunching and cracking, of the way blood spattered and flesh was torn apart while screams rent the air.

Maybe some day Enju will go back to beat the monster that towers over her. Maybe some day she'll take on what everybody now knows as the Survival Challenge. Maybe some day she'll stop being afraid of the dark, and the sounds that echo in it.

    But not today.

The quote from the beginning of the biography is by T.E. Lawrence.
