  • [HADA Leaf Chuunin] Hyuuga Kannon

    Name: Hyuuga Kannon
    Age: 22
    Sex: Male
    Height: 5'6"

    Character Type: Shinobi

    Country/Village: Fire Country/Konohagakure
    Rank: Chuunin
    Division: HADA

    Physical Description:
His flesh looks unnaturally flat and lifeless, as though every inch of his body and face had been coated in dull mottled plastic. In places his skin is knotted and tight and the spectrum of colors across it ranges from pale, dead gray to clotted brown. He has almost no facial features to speak of- in place of a nose is a slightly raised mound of flesh with two holes for nostrils. His entire face is rounded and devoid of sharp edges. Two highly expressive and watery white eyes sit big and round in the middle of his barren face. Indeed, emotions are hard to detect on the warped face of Kannon. As a consequence, his eyes are far more expressive than one would normally find on a Hyuuga. Ancient burned scar tissue extends across his mouth and, when not using a prosthetic, his impeccably white teeth are exposed to the air due to his mouth being unable to completely close all the way. This give him a slight drooling problem and a large speech impediment, something which keeps him from speaking loudly when not wearing a facial prosthetic.

The rest of his body is likewise gnarled. Although he possesses the light frame common to the Hyuuga, the skin is so tight across the muscle that instead of looking delicate or regal, he appears lumpy and misshapen. It is important to note that few people have seen the full extent of the damage on his person, as Kannon frequently conceals his face and wears long clothing that covers it up. Likewise, he is as bald as a bean, and is usually seen with fake set of hair which mimics the Hyuuga's naturally long, black locks.

Every move Kannon makes, whether a simple wave of his hand or a tepid embrace, is coated with a thin sense of distance and detachment. While his voice is saturated with soft and genuinely tones, it also holds a note of guarded deference as though he were always worried about offending someone. His eyes are his easiest tell, but reading them can be difficult as they rapidly shift through the shinobi's highly variable emotions. Kannon's posture and actions flow out with a vapid enthusiasm; he goes through great lengths to appear as approachable and non-threatening as possible

Kannon's outfits vary depending on the duty but always share the same theme of simplicity. While off work and enjoying time in the village, he usually dons his father's old casual suits. It is easy to tell the clothes were not originally his own as the shoulders are a bit big and the pants run a bit long. More contemporary urban styles sometime find their way onto Kannon, but his social life is slow enough that he rarely needs to 'fit in' with a large crowd. Everything is always clean and pressed, without any stains or wrinkles that might offend a prim and proper sensibility.

During missions he opts for as simple and nondescript an outfit as possible: green HADA headband on his head, vest on his torso, black pants and sandals on his legs, and a nice, winning smile across his whatever his 'face' might be that day. During the rare occasions he is required for some Hyuuga function he also wears his father's old traditional-styled clothing. The once fancy and expensive robes are now faded and worn, but they serve the purpose well enough. Among the Hyuuga he always takes great pains to be presentable and deferential. Even when it shames him greatly, he discards all disguises when speaking with his elders, as he has been taught never to lie to family.

Kannon 'usual' face imitates pictures of his young father. This is by no means a set disguise, but some people have come to identify him by his father's old appearance.

No amount of pity can fill the canyon of loathing Kannon buried himself in. The man is well into adulthood but still wallows in what can only be described as the rotten blood of his family history. Sharing blood with some of the most arrogant and haughty Hyuuga taught to accept bitter, scathing judgment as both deserved and necessary. He does not feel worthy of the gift his genes have given him, a sentiment shared by more than a few who share his blood. The Hyuuga name and spirit, on the whole, is something he sees as separate and higher from himself. Around family he is timid, withdrawn, and utterly pathetic. Looking at him one would see less a man or warrior and more a mutt keeping itself subservient to its master.

Surviving his father's daily mental instability calloused his patience to the point where he rationalizes any behavior, no matter how depraved or debased. Everything can eventually be forgiven. Kannon knows and believes he can make things right, but never by taking shortcuts. As a soldier he does whatever is needed regardless of how unpleasant or risky it might be. For every windfall received he is gratuitously thankful. For every loss he recoils but perseveres. It makes him at times insufferably unyielding- Kannon can be battered, bloodied, and bullied, but rarely broken.

He loves people. Talking to strangers is something he derives much joy from and many of his old friends are non-shinobi originally met through routine shinobi missions. Kannon is also fond of physical contact, and at times this can present in uncomfortable ways. Intellectually he is no slouch but he does not share the sublime scholarly intellect of some of his cousins. Instead his mind is a playful sort and loves to tease out clues and patterns from the simple things. He shares an interest in children- something he says he inherited from his father.

Very few topics trouble him, but the subjects of his father or his Hyuuga blood cut him unimaginably deep. Years of trying to please the high standards of the Hyuuga have meant steering conversations away from his history and burned a contradictory set of rules within him that can clash with unpleasant results. Pleasing all of the people all of the time is something Kannon strives for every day, regardless of knowing the goal is utterly futile.

    Present Day
When he is seen on Hyuuga grounds, it is usually only after his father has expelled him from their shared room, again. He still lives with his invalid father, taking care of him, cooking their meals, cleansing their conscience. It's slow but rewarding work, over two decades in the making for the maturing chuunin. At home he is rarely noticed, as he always slips into and out of the Hyuuga compound in disguise. No Hyuuga worth their salt is fooled, of course, and most of his fellow clan members accept the arrangement without trouble. Mostly, remaining invisible keeps the unfriendly truce between Kannon and his few nastier relatives from erupting into anything unpleasant. Within the village proper Kannon switches between various faces and cloth masks, just to keep up an appearance of anonymity. When not wearing his hitai-ate he chooses to still wear the Hada green band around his forearm. Comrades and those in the know are able to identify him by his eyes alone, as typically they one thing he doesn't hide.

Konohagakure is repairing itself now and the highly social and empathetic soldier is doing all he can to help. It brings him great pleasure to be useful to his countrymen in a way that does not involve violence. By rebuilding the village, Kannon tries to rebuild his reputation as well. Among the new divisions he fell into Hada- though he possessed a degree of expertise with katon, his methods and beliefs put him square with the forthright Hada rather than the tactical Seishou. There are many within the Hyuuga (as well as in the shinobi community) who still call him a coward. During the recent invasion he chose to stand guard over civilians rather than move to the front lines to repel the invaders. 'Coward', however, is far superior a label than Kannon has grown up with.

Fortunately the return of ANBU and renewed whispers of the lost son Hyuuga Kaito have all but buried any Kannon's more recent scandals. His role now is to silently and invisibly support the civilians of Fire Country as well as to regain his father's lost Hyuuga pride and glory. His reputation ebbs and flows like water eroding away rotting sand on a beach, and each inch that disappears brings him closer to a day where he can walk without a mask once again.

The shinobi's record crumbled to its blackest in the months after the war. Stories of 'the disfigured Hyuuga' spread like wildfire and it didn't take long for the already terrible event to get blown into a massive scandal. Kannon's name and face were synonymous with naivety and weakness, and both from within and outside of traditional Hyuuga gossip Kannon's name was whispered to be a sign of decay of the old ways. Kannon's failure made the history of his parents public and the incident was one of the few times that some of the Hyuuga's dirty laundry managed to escape their closely guarded walls. That cold month at war haunts Kannon still. Allegedly even his father still breaks down and cries whenever 'Snow' is mentioned in any form.

He entered the war as an experienced chuunin and had been assigned to prisoner transporting duty along with many old friends from his genin years. No mask covered his face at this time, and both friends and foe alike saw the Hyuuga for what he was. At the time this seemed like a good thing: it built respect among both the Hyuuga and in Leaf to have their son performing brave acts with no shame in his heritage. One night a very sociable war criminal was transferred to their guard group. Though they had been advised not to talk to their charges, the charismatic prisoner managed to sink his hooks into Kannon and easily manipulated the emotional shinobi. The prisoner questioned and pulled apart Kannon's Hyuuga ancestry, playing his weaknesses like a harp and striking at his deep and personal flaws. He forced the Hyuuga into making a mistake. Five of his fellow shinobi were struck down due to Kannon's misjudgement. In addition, the savvy prisoner and several other murderers ended up released and back out into the heart of the country. Some still have not been caught to this day.

Kannon's steady push towards repairing his families reputation resulted in multiple high-profile successes for the young soldier. In the weeks before combat operations in Snow started he had even been showing his face around town and the Hyuuga grounds without fear. With the fate of the Hokage uncertain Kannon did everything he could to help the Hyuuga shore up support, even if that meant coming out from behind the the safety of a disguise. From his genin years he had built solid relationships with many of his peers and among the Hyuuga (at least those separate from his much more traditional, strict relatives) his hard work paid dividends. Many bridges burned by his parents had been rebuilt over this period of his life. His father had been spotted leaving their room, just to make small talk. Occasionally his father even helped the young ones train. There was exciting talk of his father becoming a part-time goolagong sensei at the academy. As a soldier Kannon still worked in the background and he was never the star of any team. However his slow, grinding willpower and sincere investment in every job brought both military success and emotional wealth to the chuunin's life.

Kannon's rookie career stretched on for much longer than it ought to have. His promotion to chuunin came after the seventeen year-old Kannon exceeded expectations in a volatile crime-boss assassination. His job had been to support and scout for threats, but when a high profile gang member slipped away the genin put himself at great personal risk to stay on the trail and eventually capture the target. His actions were the culmination of a lifetime spent throwing himself into any situation where others hesitated to tread, all to prove himself worthy of bearing the Hyuuga name. For better or worse, the genin could back his recklessness up with enough skill to survive and (usually) succeed. Most saw his miraculous escapes as pure luck, but after years of similar performances it was impossible to ignore the teenager's talents any longer.

A good deal of change happened to Kannon while he worked as a lowly genin. When his teenage naivete and rabid protection of his father had torn apart budding relationships, he learned to temper and silently accept perceived injustice. When his rigid beliefs met immutable or disagreeable circumstance, he learned to understand and compromise where necessary. His father's legacy plagued him like an ulcer, but he turned that shame into a motivator to work alongside people of all types. More than anything, he wanted to be valued by the Hyuuga. The process tore his soul to pieces at times, but a light of hope always remained bright in his eyes. Working through to the rank of genin tempered his will and patience. However his desire to prove himself as a legitimate Hyuuga exposed a crippling weakness. Once someone got into his head, Kannon was easy to toy with, and many of the more vicious children would exploit this to drive the young boy to tears.

Kannon's father rapidly deteriorated whenever his son was absent from their home. Men and women who passed by their dwelling would hear Kannon's father weeping, or screaming, or moaning for 'his boy'. When the child would return after the day's training, his father would sit quietly and start at his son's eyes. Outbursts still occurred, but less frequently. Sometimes his father would strike him, sometimes he would hug him. Often the old man would tell his son how much he hated him, and how Kannon should have never been born. Equally as often his father would tell the boy how much he loved him and pleaded for him to never leave. For the young, fragile Kannon, this was home.

On the Hyuuga compound there was an understanding that Kannon wasn't able to devote as much time to the clan's talents as the other children. His father was unable to tutor him, and Kannon had trouble learning due to frequently having to switch teachers to accommodate his father's condition. Only once the boy had been lucky enough to see Hisae, when he had chanced onto a sparring session with a close relative of hers. He cannot remember what she said to him, but to this day he still remembers her eyes. They seemed to stare right into him, straight past his mask. He imagined he saw pity in the great Hyuuga's face. It burned him terribly.

Kannon had been introduced as a Hyuuga to the class, and he did everything in his power to prove it. When studying he was diligent, proud, and respectful. However, the facade fell apart outside of those halls, as unlike most Hyuuga he was an emotional and affectionate little boy. Kannon loved being around other children who didn't share his name or know his history and he was always keen on making new friends. His always hidden face drew its share of teases and taunts, but he vastly preferred the academy life to the training he received from the distant, cold, or downright unpleasant tutors on Hyuuga grounds.

Learning to use the abilities of his blood proved difficult for the boy in his early years. While a good number of his closest Hyuuga cousins boasted of their rare bloodline, Kannon felt like the Hyuuga name was a burden that he just couldn't lift. He was too young to understand why he was different or why so many looked down on his father, but he knew enough that he didn't like it. The boy showed tremendous promise in in the little training he did receive, and though some Hyuuga might hold their nose up at him in private there was enough merit in the child's talent to send him to the academy at as soon as possible.

Eighteen months after the birth of Kannon, a Main family Hyuuga male and long time friend of his mother's died during routine combat operations. Evidence came to light soon after, evidence that Kannon did not share his father's blood. The uproar lasted for months, completely swamping the small family. His mother, though not openly harassed, was sullied and degraded with private, foul rumors. His father would spend long nights away from their dwelling just so he could completely ignore the swirling talk surrounding his wife and child. A time came when his father demanded total custody of the child- he did not believe it was healthy to raise Kannon with a woman of his mother's 'reputation'. She refused, but his father did not back down. The enormous pressure of being abandoned most her 'friends' and now the idea of losing her child tore the woman's spirit and sanity to pieces. While giving her child a bath one evening, she cracked.

When they pulled Kannon out from the blaze he was little more than a swollen, boiled-alive bag of infant flesh. At a steep price, the advanced medical facilities in Leaf kept the boy tethered to life. His mother's corpse was recovered at the origin of the fire and the incident was eventually determined to be a suicide. His father, utterly devastated, sunk into an enormously deep depression. He threatened the doctors repeatedly, and eventually had to be sedated and medicated for months afterwards. Both he and his son would recover, but it was only the father who never came back mentally. Kannon improved remarkably fast with heavy shinobi assistance, and by the age of three he was once again an active and vibrant young boy, minus a good deal of skin. For a few months his father attempted to train the boy in the clan's arts, before his episodes proved too much to handle and the boy's shinobi training was passed to aunts and uncles instead.

Despite their frequent fights, both his parents loved Kannon very, very much. His mother was renown for her masterful katon skills but frequently ran afoul of the Hyuuga Hatsumi due to her willful personality (and holding something of a massive ego herself), and his father held a reputation for being quite a formidable physical fighter. His father truly enjoyed taking care of the child, and often he would perform the more traditional 'motherly' roles with his boy such as feeding and cleaning.
"You'll laugh at me now, but he'll be better than all you once I start training him," his father used to brag to his friends. "He'll be better than me, even. I can see it in his eyes. You'll all see it too, just give it time."

As much as it pains me to say this... I love this character. As creepy as he comes off, he's still human and inherently good. While it throws a wrench in to the whole Hyuuga standard of pretty, hardened warriors... it still works. I'm actually honored to give your first Half

Kaen Edit: You're not deleting your way out of this!

        You mean = 13.

Other then this, I personally love this character. It is an unique angle for a Hyuuga to take, and what can I say, I love your writing Junge. I will hold off on slapping my halfs on this though until the error is fixed, and WoF as voiced her opinion on if this is a go or a no-go. Since she is the only one who really matters in this discussion :P.

Oh, and I don't know if its' that important but maybe you should put those taijutsu style bonuses at the end of your phys stats. Thats' more my IHMO though.

                My, my, my...

This is an interesting take on the Hyuuga clan. I'm willing to believe there are a fair number of them that are crazies, and they'd be willing to bully others incessantly to get what they wanted. It's an ugly, ugly business.

Much like your dood, here. Ha!

It's definitely an odd character in many ways, but I'm okay with that. In fact the only thing I have issue with is the heavy dependence on Pureblood vs Branch for the Hyuuga clan. Such labels are considered old fashioned now, and Hyuuga Hisae has gone to great lengths to encourage the clan to forget the old discriminatory thought processes.

Don't get me wrong, there are certainly some who want to abide by the old rules. My own Hyuuga happens to be progeny of such a household. I'd prefer to think that it's not so widespread as you've described here. Hisae would not allow such hateful talk and actions within the compound walls.

Tone down the discrimination and obvious loathing (yes, I'm aware that it's a Junge character and thus it's all you know... lol) just a bit and I shall return.

Please do not request registry checks. I'll get to it soon enough.

Tone down the discrimination and obvious loathing
                  But it's all I know!

Removed every (or almost every, I think) reference to 'Pureblood' and replaced it with vague references to unfriendly/traditional family members and/or general, non-Hyuuga specific related contempt. I tweaked the wordings a small bit to accommodate a less laser-targeted kind of discrimination (this mostly took the form of changing some words to make the tone more unsympathetic, no real content change). I also tried to fit his family relations into broader strokes rather tying it too abruptly to Hyuuga-specific info. Little changes all over the place! Hopefully it won't be too much of a pain to skim through.

If there are specific incidences within the bio that need to be further altered/removed, I can do that as well.

This was not at all what I had in mind when opening the clan, but I admit that I'm oddly fascinated. Welcome to Leaf.
