  • [Cloud Jounin] Sato Masaru - Voice of Thunder

    Name: Sato Masaru
    Age: 29
    Sex: Male
    Height: 5'11"

    Character Type: Shinobi

    Country/Village: Lightning Country/Cloud Village
    Rank: Jounin - Sergeant
    Division: Demolisher

Physical Description: Masaru is a warrior, through and through, and a classically handsome one at that. He stands tall, back straight and shoulders relaxed. The man's in fine shape with well-defined muscles that he carries with easy swagger. Masaru has a strong jaw coated in a fine layer of dark fuzz kept trimmed and neat. His hair is short with a gentle wave to it that always seems perfectly set. Masaru's eyes are green and unflinching, not given to surprise or worry. He keeps a wide personal space, adding to an air of being unapproachable.

Clothing: While within the bounds of the village, he usually dresses casually in comfortable shirts and slacks, with his chevrons pinned around his bicep on an armband. Routinely, he is chided by students at the Academy for his lack of decorum, even while teaching, but Masaru is not one for uniforms. On major missions, Masaru dons his flak jacket and shinobi gear out of some desire to appease his superiors. However, he has a tendency to abandon the jacket with complaints that it's too heavy. No matter the dress, Masaru is rarely seen without the company of three katana which he wears hanging from the back of his waist.

Personality: Masaru is a true wunderkind with an instinctive aptitude that makes him a quick learner. Diligent and dedicated, everything he does looks easy instead of practiced. Masaru is confident, aware of his own strength, but not overconfident, aware of his limits, if unwilling to reveal them. He is absolutely the center of his own universe, and while he doesn't expect to be the sun for everyone else, he at least wants to be their north star. Masaru is inflexible and difficult to get along with, and tends to come across as insincere in social situations.

Nindo; "Way of the Ninja": "The first requirement of being a hero isn't being right, it's being strong."

    Clan/Bloodline: Dragon Energy

    Combo Archetype: Voice of Thunder
Special: Once per thread, when the Voice of Thunder uses any raiton, they may use their second action to gather clouds. At the start of their next post, the weather becomes a thunderstorm, which lasts until the end of the thread. The storm doesn't pose a threat to trained combatants, but it is very spooky. As a passive effect, the Voice of Thunder is never impeded by rainfall.

Biography: "The man who stands at the top stands alone."

    Sato Masaru was born better.

When the bigger kids in the neighborhood came around and picked on his friends, he beat them up and chased them off. Every time. He got knocked around, too, but he always won, and eventually they stopped picking fights with him, and not long after that they ran whenever he rounded the corner. Kids his own age called him big brother – the protector of the playground, the Little Raikage – and he wore that mantle as a crown. A precocious child with a strong sense of justice, even the gruffest adults around said he was a good boy.

His teachers at the Academy asked him what he was good at, and Masaru replied “everything”. To his credit, he often proved himself right, and quickly sailed to high marks across the board. But, his peers no longer saw him as their selfless guardian. In the competitive world of academics, Masaru became a teacher's pet and a hated rival almost overnight. Jeers, whispered insults, accusations of cheating – the first barbs stung the worst. They had recast him as their villain. And so, Masaru resolved to show them the truth.

    Villains can wear crowns, too.”

By the time he graduated, most everyone was glad to be rid of him. The teachers found it difficult to reprimand their star pupil, but Masaru had made the Academy hell for the other children. Sparring in particular went from unpleasant to dangerous; Masaru demanded blood as payment when he deigned to step into the ring. He always collected.

The first real struggle, perhaps in his whole life, came with his genin teammates. With a wholehearted belief in his own manner of divine right, he bickered with his teammates and steamrolled them when they refused to buckle. Often, in those early missions, their sensei sat Masaru in time out until he was ready to play nice. He forgets himself, their sensei would say, and then he gets stuck. His teammates, in those first months, saw him get back up when he was knocked down, the same way he always had, but now they saw his legs shake, the contents kept under perfectionist pressure.

When they offered their hands, Masaru took them without hesitation.

They rocketed past the rest of the genin squads with Masaru at the helm. He pulled his teammates up to his level with the gentle strength he'd once left to gather dust. As they approached their Chuunin Exams, they operated as a seamless unit. They passed into the third section of the exam with minimal trouble. Masaru made it to the final round and lost.

As a chuunin, Masaru pushed himself. He worked long hours on missions that kept him in perpetual danger, taking breaks only when the office refused to give him jobs on the premise that he needed to sleep. So, his cycle of working himself to the bone and then recovering continued. When he wasn't out in the field, Masaru wormed his way into helping at the mission office and then, later, at the Academy. Here, he discovered a new talent – teaching. Kids actually liked him, their cool older brother who made everything look so easy. Masaru was a patient instructor and, though the work didn't challenge him, he found time at the Academy easy and relaxing compared to his normal workload.

When war broke out, Masaru lived on the frontlines. He developed a reputation among older shinobi as the Voice of Thunder. A skirmisher and an outrider, Masaru had a tendency to arrive as backup exactly when he needed to, with a column of storm clouds at his back. When he came crashing in through a solid wall of rain, Masaru was in his element completely. A master of hit and run and emergency rescue, his missions became instrumental in protecting Cloud's assets against the tide of the G-Men.

After the destruction of Cloud, Masaru lent his assistance at the interim Academy at Nagai's Hidden Cloud, while recovering from a particularly grievous injury. Those familiar with him were glad he had sided with Nagai, but few questioned his decision. His explanation always came out easy:

“The strong have a duty to protect the weak, not to obey them.”

At the battle of Jishaku, Masaru hesitated. Catch criminals and cutting down G-Men was one thing, but fighting former colleagues and students very clearly another. In the final struggle for survival between the two fractured Cloud Villages, he pulled his punches. When faced with the reality of his words, he found it difficult to draw his blade. Other shinobi knew who he was and knew to seize this one opportunity at weakness before he recovered. Masaru drove himself into a corner.

    He got angry.

After Denryuu's defeat, the rest of Nagai's forces found him at the edge of Jishaku still swinging his sword at anyone who got too close. Masaru stood at the center of a ring of bodies, a one-man whirlwind of destruction. He stood his ground until he finally collapsed, exhausted, before the medics could collect him. Masaru earned his promotion for his valor, if not for his tactics.

Since the establishment of the new village, Masaru has been kept as a back pocket option. His experience at Jishaku rattled something deep and, now, he's useful primarily as overwhelming force. When missions don't call for destruction, they usually aren't given to Masaru, and he's instead kept safe in the village, which he stalks like a caged lion. Though officially classed as a Demolisher, most of Masaru's actual day to day is spent with Academy students and genin as a special instructor.
